Historic first Ulster title for Down ladies

July 11, 2014
Down's ladies footballers were crowned Ulster intermediate champions for the first time following a 0-15 to 1-6 victory over holders Fermanagh in Aughnamullen, Co. Monaghan last Sunday.

It was a hugely impressive performance by the Mourne girls, who are managed by Mark Copeland and his backroom team of Ryan McShane, Lock Leneghan, Kevin Leneghan and former Mayo star Diane O'Hora. Down lost to Cavan at the semi-final stage of last year's All-Ireland championship, but hopes are high that they can go a step further this year in light of last weekend's historic success.

Down recovered from the concession of an early goal to go into the break on level terms with Fermanagh, 0-6 to 1-3. The Erne County regained the lead shortly after the restart, but Down gradually gained the upperhand and outscored the holders by 0-9 to 0-2 in the time remaining with Jess Foy, Lauren Cunningham and Aileen Pyres among those to get on the scoresheet.
