U12 Boys win semifinal in Glenswilly:
Glenswilly 3-3
Gaeil Fhánada 3-10

Well done to the U12 boys who qualified for the Northern Board Division 2 final and the All-County Quarter final by winning in Glenswilly on Wednesday night. Goals at crucial times in the game from Calum McAteer and Ciaran Sweeney were the difference in the end against a very good Glenswilly team.
Fanad started the game well and dominated possession but some wasteful shooting meant that they were only ahead at half time by a few points after playing with the breeze. Caolan Gibbons, Jamie McAteer and James McAteer got good scores and when they were under pressure in the lead up to half time Ciaran Sweeney popped up with a rocket of a goal to finish a lovely move from the Fanad boys.
Glenswilly stepped it up in the second half and for the first 10 minutes they were the better team. The score difference was back to just two points at this stage but then Calum McAteer showed great leadership skills by rattling off 1-2 and he really took charge of the game around the middle when he was needed most. It was nice to see how the Fanad boys reacted when Glenswilly put pressure on them.
The Northern Final is set for Saturday 1st or Sunday against Downings.

Last gasp McHugh point breaks Fanad hearts:

Burt 1-6
Gaeil Fhánada 0-8

A 62nd minute point from Sean McHugh was enough to give Burt the victory in a keenly contested tie in Hibernian Park. Both teams were evenly matched throughout the hour with the main difference being Conor Harkin's 10th minute goal. Harkin was a handful throughout and played a key role in most of Burt's scores.

Fanad played against the breeze in the first half and started well, two frees from Seami Nanny Friel within the opening five minutes being the reward for some fine attacking play from Jimmy Coyle and Shaun McElwaine. Burt's game plan was something that the purists might not enjoy, deploying 15 men inside their own half, however their blistering counter attacking did make up for their defensive approach. Their first score came on 10 minutes from the impressive Harkin, a long hopeful ball eluded Odhran Shiels and fell into Harkin's arms who then tucked the ball under Mark McConigley. Seami Nanny replied with another free before Harkin again floated over with his left on 18 minutes. Mark Coyle from center half back and UCD's Georgie Kelly were having strong games for Burt and seen plenty ball. Fanad did dominate possession but found themselves working the ball across the field until the opportunity to break arose. Harkin floated over a 45 but again Seami Nanny replied with a free after Patrick Carr was fouled. Harkin again tapped over a free after James Gallagher fumbled a kick out to bring the curtain down on what was a rather dour first half, with both teams struggling to break the line.

HT:

Burt 1-3
Gaeil Fhánada 0-4

Fanad started the half brightly and Seami Nanny reduced the deficit with a big score after Brian McVeigh was fouled. Mark Coyle responded after a surging run from his own '45 and judged the breeze to perfection to push the lead back out to two. In between, Frank Sweeney, who was Fanad's best performer, cut out two certain Burt goal chances as his strength and tenacity allowed him to nip in and take possession at crucial periods. Brian McVeigh powered through to score from distance to make it a one point game only for Harkin to pop over a free after McDermott was fouled by Jimmy Coyle as he bore down on goal. Oisin Shiels then swung over to reduce the margin to the minimum despite the Burt contingent thinking otherwise. Possession was vital and Fanad had the most of it. Seami Coshia, Seami Nanny and Michael Sweeney all had efforts go wide or drop short in between but Seami Nanny made amends with a huge free to tie the game. The intensity levels rose as the game entered it's final 5 minutes and both teams had chances to point, Mickey McCann's effort tailing wide for Burt while Michael Sweeney should have done better from 40m. Burt took possession from the kick out and worked the ball out to Coyle who in turn fed McHugh. McHugh's strike was sweet with the outside of his boot and went straight between the posts. As Fanad cross the Burt halfway line, referee James Connors, who had a fine game, blew for time.

All in all, neither team deserved to lose in what was a real game of wits and patience. Fanad will be once again kicking themselves as another game passes that they definitely could have got something out of. Frank Sweeney was immense in defense, Shaun McElwaine was a tower of strength in the air while Brian McVeigh also worked his socks off throughout. For Burt, a solid defensive display coupled with moments of brilliance from Coyle, Harkin & McHugh won them the game.

Fanad have a two week break before entertaining Letterkenny Gaels on the 15th July. Aidan will be disappointed with the result but the performance was massively improved from the Downings and Moville encounters.
