McGuinness has been assisting Mayo, says Carney

Jim McGuinness has been helping Mayo to plot Dublin's downfall, according to RTE co-commentator Martin Carney.

McGuinness masterminded Donegal's famous All-Ireland semi-final victory over the Dubs two years ago - that defeat remains the only one the reigning All-Ireland champions have suffered in the championship under Jim Gavin - and speaking on Today FM's Last Word last evening, Carney claimed that the Glenties man has offered Mayo advice on how they should set up defensively.

"You can't play Dublin in toe-to-toe from the word go," said the ex-Mayo and Donegal player.

"They will have to have a sweeper system that they brought into place in the Fermanagh game and have added incrementally since then, primarily with Kevin McLoughlin in the role.

"I think they will try that again but they might even have a double sweeper. It is interesting, in their last weekend in Limerick they had Jim McGuinness down speaking to them. Now, Jim McGuinness isn't coming down to talk to them about forward play. It has to be to look at defence."

It would be ironic if McGuinness was to play a part in a Mayo victory given the pain his Donegal team inflicted on them in the 2012 All-Ireland final.
