Curran and Donegal have extra motivation

Donegal will be gunning for revenge when they renew acquaintances with Cavan in the Ulster U-21 FC at MacCumhaill Park tonight (8pm).

The Breffni County have held the upper hand in the last two provincial finals and last year's loss, Donegal led by two points with as many minutes remaining, was a particularly bitter pill for manager Maxi Curran to swallow.

"That defeat is still very raw for us," Curran told The Irish News.

"We threw that match away. We thought we had a great chance of winning Ulster last year; we had some fantastic players - Paddy McBrearty, Marty Reilly, Ryan McHugh - boys that have gone on to star a senior level.

"We just came up short so that obviously gives us extra motivation this year."

Curran and his backroom team are currently sweating on the fitness of senior squad members Hugh McFadden and Darach O'Connor.

McFadden picked up an injury in last Sunday's Division 1 defeat to Kerry while O'Connor is struggling with a hamstring complaint.

"There is a tiny chance that one or both of them could play some part but it's very doubtful.

"So, without them it makes our task even more difficult."
