Solid senior display earns two valuable league points

Gaeil Fhánada 0:12

Naomh Colmcille 0:07

It proved to be a tough, tight and hard hitting encounter yesterday afternoon, but Gaeil Fhánada were five points ahead when referee Connie Doherty sounded the full time whistle.

Gaeil Fhánada, who were playing into the lower goals in the first half were first out of the blocks. Mark Mc Ateer converted an early free for the home side, but the visitors replied with a mighty score of their own. Oisín Shiels sauntered forward and fired over a great score for the Gaels to give them the lead again. Fanad had a great opportunity to open up a four point lead, but the Naomh Colmcille goalkeeper pulled off a great save from Bernard Mc Gettigan. Mark Friel fired over another Gaels score before the visitors responded to level the scores by the quarter hour mark. Referee Connie Doherty dished out several yellow cards during the second quarter, but kept good order on proceedings. Bernard Mc Gettigan edged the Gaels ahead with a free before Mark Mc Ateer and Conor Mc Gonigle both pointed from play before half time to give Gaeil Fhánada a three point lead at the break.

Naomh Colmcille began the second half strongly and fired over two points in the first two minutes. Mark Friel responded for Gaeil Fhánada before the visitors cut the lead to a point again after five minutes. Mark Mc Ateer fired over a lovely Gaeil Fhánada score before goalkeeper Eoin Mc Gonigle stepped forward to convert a 45 meter kick with aplomb. Two further points from Paul Coyle and Oisín Shiels stretched the Gaels lead further as the twentieth minute of the second period approached. Naomh Colmcille responded with a point of their own but any thoughts of a comeback were quelled when a lack of discipline during the next Gaels attack resulted in two men from the visiting team receiving their second yellow cards. It was to prove a struggle for Naomh Colmcille to make inroads after that point, and a final Eoghan Carr point a minute into injury time sealed the victory for Aidan’s men.

The Gaels played well in patches, but will be disappointed they didn’t convert any of their four point blank goal chances. Jonny Gallagher played very well in the full back line, while Bernard and Oisín were formidable in the middle third. Conor Mc Gonigle was busy throughout, while both Marks, Mc Ateer and Friel did well inside. For Naomh Colmcille, Willie Gillespie was a threat, while their goalkeeper made a string of important saves.

Aidan’s attention will turn to Naomh Muire, who will visit Páirc Uí Shiadhail in a fortnight.

Gaels prove too strong in their Championship opener

Aodh Ruadh made the long journey from Ballyshannon to Páirc Uí Shiadhail this morning to face John Mc Conigley’s troops in the first round of the Intermediate Championship.

The Gaels began strongly and were the dominant force throughout. Miriam Murphy opened the scoring for the Gaels in the second minute before Lauren Carr fired home a goal moments later. Lauren and Rachel Sweeney added further points from play to leave the Gaels six points to the good after five minutes. Both teams hit a couple of bad wides before the Gaels took full control of proceedings. Clare Friel fired home one of three first half goals after good work from Miriam Murphy. The teams traded the next two points, Lauren Carr with the Gaels effort. Clare Friel then finished her second to the net. Lauren Carr added another from play before Clare finished her hatrick with a few minutes of the half remaining. Michelle Mc Devitt fired over the last two points of the half to leave the Gaels in command at half time.

The game was finished as a contest within the first couple of minutes of the second period. Michelle Mc Devitt found the net within the first minute before a quick fire goal and two points were finished off by Miriam Murphy. Eibhlín Shiels found her range moments later for a point. Mairead Coll, Tori Gallagher and Aisling Mc Devitt entered the fray in the early stages of the second half. Aisling Mc Devitt and Rachel Sweeney added the Gaels scoreline after another Aodh Ruadh point. Méabh Duffy and Aoife Gibbons were introduced ten minutes into the second half. Four Mc Devitt points, three from Aisling and one from Michelle stretched the Gaels lead. Aodh Ruadh responded with a goal and point of their own before Mairead Coll finished of the Gaels scoring tally for the day. Aodh Ruadh added a final point before referee Pat Barrett blew for full time.

John Mc Conigley and Hughie Shiels will be pleased with the performance, but know that tougher tests lie in wait. Well done on a good team performance.
