Westmeath schools 2nd year beat Offaly schools this morning by 6 points to advance to the Leinster final vs Kilkenny schools. Well done to all involved.

Just a word on Joe Fortune, manager's get criticised when things don't go to plan so it's only fair to give the man the praise he deserves, he has been fantastic all year and seems to have a great relationship with the players. Winning 2A with a comprehensive win against Down in Thurles, putting in some super displays of hurling against the top teams in the championship, earning a memorable draw vs Wexford and then the emphatic win over Laois yesterday. He also seems to have a plan in place for all the young players we have coming through, they seem to be working alongside our seniors. I'd imagine a lot of the focus with these lads is on S&C. The players deserve massive credit of course, but Joe and his management team do equally. Hopefully we can see the return of Liam Varley, Shane Clavin, Josh Coll and Gary Greville along with the addition of 2/3 of the younger lads, and I'm convinced we can make further progress next year with this management team.

Replying To jobber:  "To be fair most of the clubs are now producing intercounty hurlers at underage level.ok still not at the level of the big 3 but now Clan Na Gael and Na Piarsaigh are powerful players with Plunketts,Southern Gaels and Cullion improving. We need St Vincent's,Delvin,Fr Dalton's and Brigid's to up their game"
Midfielder Dean Kelly from the schools final today is from Brigids and he is a big powerful skilful hurler. Great effort by our seniors down in Thurles, final score Tipperary 3-25-2-21 Westmeath. The four u20 lads were excellent. Another great effort to follow on from the Limerick game. We should have zero fear of Antrim and Dublin in Mullingar in the last two games, let's try finish with two wins.

Replying To Jack_Sparrow:  "Very disappointing outcome for Westmeath. On a different note I see they are coaching hurling in Castledaly up to u10s. Now I'm sure it's early days there but it's one for the "Can't be done etc etc" brigade to ponder and maybe rethink. Someone obviously thinks it can be done and are doing it."
Yeah I heard something about them starting a juvenile club but wasn't sure if it was true, heard about another club thinking of doing similar. That's great news and fair play to them, credit where credit is due!

Well done to CBS Mullingar u14 hurlers on a marvellous win in the Leinster Final over Wexford CBS. Last year's u14s lost the Leinster Final by a point to Enniscorthy! Great to see consistent improvement and success with the small ball in the school, competing and winning at this level. Super work being done, well done to all involved.

Great effort by a young inexperienced Westmeath side to hold the All Ireland champions to 6 pts.

Westmeath schools playing Kilkenny schools in Leinster Final in Cusack Park on Saturday. Hopefully they get good support, free entry. Best of luck to all involved.

Replying To preddan:  "great win guys to get a result and not playing that well. i think the team can play alot better than we seen today and hoping we will see it come championship. tbf to laois i thought of the better play they were on top slightly better with teamwork and passing so westmeath grounding out a win like this is mighty. Playing in the stronger side of the division even though the beatings did stand to the team in the end massively. Derek mcnicolas still has a lot to offer, two class points when he came on."
We didn't play that well really, particularly in the first half. We certainly can play far far better than that. Like I previously mentioned, our forwards were excellent and so efficient. Putting up 3-24 with a below par performance definitely bodes well. Laois threw everything at us and even when they drew level the lads didn't panic at all and went straight back down the pitch and stuck the ball in the net. Eoin Keyes is a talent, super off the bench. We all criticised Joe Fortune (including myself) for drafting McNicholas back in, we look a bit silly now. What a classy stickman, two wonderful points from range to seal the deal at the very end.

Some of the stuff on here is ridiculous, our team is a homegrown team with the exception of two players who have parents from Westmeath. I dont see any problems at all. A whole lot of whining over nothing.

Aaron Craig has to be considered a liability in these games and not because of his ability. He gets sent off quiet a bit.

Congratulations to Killian Doyle, the first Westmeath hurler to be nominated for an all star since David Kilcoyne. Great achievement for a hugely talented hurler.

It hasn't been mentioned here yet but well done to St Oliver Plunketts on winning the u15 Division 1 championship, finally a team has broken the dominance held by Clonkill, Castletown and Raharney. Hopefully this is a sign of other clubs coming up to that level now, Plunketts have been doing great work recently.

Replying To Matthew:  "How many times has Craig got sent off now in massive games which has cost Westmeath dearly… very disheartening for the rest of the team!"
Absolutely, I wouldn't be starting him in the Joe Mcdonagh to be honest. I don't want to slate any player but we haven't much chance of being competitive at Division 1 level with 14 players, discipline is key.

Some win for Cullion in the Senior B final, won by 24 points in the end I think. They won't look out of place in Senior A next year if they continue to hurl like that. With Plunketts winning the Intermediate, its been a great couple of weeks for Mullingar hurling.

Replying To RadioactiveTan:  "After taking 2 tankings like we did in the last 2 games, I'd say you'd want to be smoking something very powerful to even consider that an outcome like that is possible. Momentum is a big thing, and the reality is we took a lot of beatings earlier in the year. It's hard to gee up any team that's only victory of note this year was a relegation playoff. Compounding that whatever else is going with the management, players available/not available etc. but Doyle is a massive loss. Watching the McDonagh games last year, he was head and shoulders above the rest. No disrespect to Brendan Murtagh, he's been a brilliant hurler over the years for club and county, but bringing back a man tipping nearer to 40 than 30 that is not a sign of progress for any county. The focus has to be as many posters have pointed out on developing lads at underage. We have a limited pick in the areas that do play hurling in the county, all we can do is try and make the best of what we have."
It doesn't look good when you've good young lads like Josh Coll on the bench watching McNicholas and Murtagh, as good as they are and have been for Westmeath. I just hope we play all our young players in the league and expose them to top level hurling. The Mcdonagh cup is a write off obviously.

Replying To CleanShoulder:  "Fair playjobber. For once it's not the hurlers at the end of an embarrassing result after delusions…"
What embarrassing result? There's a difference in losing to the All Ireland champions Limerick by 6 points to losing to Wicklow in football. Don't be ridiculous and launching an attack on Jobber and the hurlers because your feeling sore this week after that performance on Sunday. I don't even follow the football but if you see the hurlers having a poor performance in the Joe Mc in a few weeks you won't see any of the hurling fraternity bringing up the footballers as an excuse. Foolish comment.
