It's looking better than it has been for the past 4 years.

Does anyone actually know anything about the player from Ballyboden. Is it S O'Connor. If so, who is he? I assume he must be a Meath lad playing in Dublin, otherwise how could he line out for us? Anyone any idea?

Yeah it is Stephen O'Connor. Played wing back for Boden the year they won the All Ireland. Got a point in the AI final against Castlebar. His Mam is from Meath I think so he qualifies for Meath like Deegan qualifies for Dublin

Don't know much about him.How old is he? But if he is good enough I am happy to welcome him.

I wonder if Dublin had a look at him?

Have no idea. To be honest I'd never heard of him before this. But hopefully he is good. Andy is casting his net far and wide anyway

Have to say I'm against bringing lads in from outside I've been very vocal against Deegan and the Ratoath being allowed play for Dublin and this is the same thing so it's a thumbs down from me

I know things are looking better under Andy but I don't like to hear us bringing in players from other counties. I know one of the players brought in may be from Meath but one of them isn't from Meath. What happens if we don't do well this year, go back into the transfer market and look for a few new players again? Barney123 (Meath) - Posts: 676 - 22/12/2016 22:38:33 1941812 Link 6 |
If they eligible then yes of course. The rule state that children of parents from county can play for that county. I'll give you one scenario, young lad grows up with a Meath parent living in different county, goes to all Meath matches and dreams of wearing the green and gold of royal, for convenience sake plays his football in club closest to him, but is a Meath fanatic. Should he not be allowed to play for Meath (as its in the rules) under where is parent is from? Btw the situation I give you is one I am familiar with. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 22/12/2016 22:51:46 1941816 Link 0 |
His mother is from Meath and he is being looked at like about 50 players at the moment. The moans on twitter, facebook etc this early is quite frankly pathetic.

To be fair, most kids born and bred in Dublin with parents from elsewhere see themselves as Dubs and nothing else. Having a fanatical GAA father might change this somewhat, but let's face it most are not. If a player has a genuine connection with Meath and the rules allow them to play then fair enough. But I don't like the idea of footballers playing for a county even within the rules if it is their second choice (at heart) and only realistic option at playing IC football. It is no different to players declaring for Ireland just because they aren't good enough or likely to play for England. It is done for selfish reasons (personal ambition). I welcome the new guys to the squad as they appear more genuine. But in general would not like to see things develop to such an extent that success is the be all and end all, with a level of recruitment that we lose our authenticity. I think the new manager will do well and I wish him the best of luck. My question to Brian, do you think that the correct message is being sent out by bringing second rate Dublin players on to the panel (I mean players who are not good enough to get on the Dublin team). Royaldunne- maybe you could get a few Westmeath players who we could bring into the panel as well! browncows (Meath) - Posts: 2342 - 23/12/2016 10:28:10 1941856 Link 6 |
Great posts by Browncows and GlasagusOr. As glas said if they have a genuine connection with Meath I have no problem with them declaring to play for Meath but I'm not sure on the two players brought into the panel. I know one plays for Dunboyne and has a link to Dunboyne but what about the other player? I would rather be like what we have been for the last 4 or 5 years than start bringing in lads from other counties who have no connection with Meath at all. Regarding Stuart Lowndes , I think a tremendous talent , left my own club and sorely missed not going to go into the club politics of it all , but hes transferred and good luck to him , and for those who may think not good enough for Dublin not good enough for Meath , for me he would not be out of place in our Dublin team .
