Replying To cowardlyasafox:  "Deegan no where near good enough to play with Meath let alone Dublin, Nash is headed for oz and in any case although he has fantastic ability more often than not he does not perform, especially when the chips are down. Jones is another with potential but has a lot to prove. Brian Conlon, Thomas o Reilly, Darragh Campion and Dylan Brady are 4 who i would think could make a real impact, have to say Cathal Finn looked impressive in an abysmal Dunboyne side last week"
Agreed, Finn and lenihan only lads on dunboyne team who should be considered for selection, not sure if darragh campion is ready for Meath seniors yet, although I could be wrong.. Andy will have a tough job finding good backs, serious problem

Lavin was very good against Derry the last day and everything he's done since with Dunboyne would have me believe he'll be a starter this year, regardless of one "abysmal" dunboyne display this year. The lads were made favourites for a reason and not many were arguing it before an off day. On Jones I said last year if someone could name me 2 better midfielders available I'd be interested to know who they are, despite his age? Because as it stands we only have Rooney there.

On Ashbourne, apart from being well drilled as you'd expect through being with Dublin underage set up s, I've never seen that much in Deegan tbh. That Brady seemed lively first half when I saw him against Dunboyne, but I don't think an Ashbourne forward won a ball the whole 2nd half as soon as Dunboyne took over and I didn't see any county standard forwards for them. There will be two new Ashbourne players on next year's panel in Menton and Curran anyway.

On the rest of the Meath SFC I don't think there is that many to come in, people seem to think there will be some massive abundance out of nowhere, despite the club scene being weak relatively speaking.

Sean Curran is an option for the backline without question.I would try him corner back for the county. You then have Menton of course who can play in a number of slots. He was outstanding for Meath wing back don't forget.O'Neill from Wolfe Tones has potential. Also Conlon from SImonstown and remember we still have the likes of Keoghan,Harnan,Finn,Lavin,Tobin. So we do have options,it is trying to get the balance right.

I would throw Douglas into that mix also.

Would Tormey from Kells be in the mix as well? He seemed decent enough in In O'Byrne cup last year, but never got much of a chance after that. Didn't see Kells in the championship this year, so I wouldn't know how he got on.

Thormey would certainly be better than many of those listed and I would add that out defence as it exists is quite slow at moving the ball forward and moreover, Menton a good player is not a defender. Guys posting judge defenders as good when the score a point or two but it is their ability to defend, use the ball well while being consistent is what is more important. Midfield and our forwards needs a bit of attention and shakeup. There are lots of players inside the county with potential but its ones who can deliver is what needed.

What about goalkeeper position for next year? I am interested in people's thoughts. Especially considering that the all round aspects of a goalkeepers play resulted in the Mayo management making the decision to change goalies between the All Ireland and the replay, it shows that current approaches are about more than shot stopping.

How did that work out for them?

It didn't work out well as we all know but it does indicate the current thinking out there regarding the role of the goalkeeper.

What Mayo did was hardly viewed as 'current thinking' by many other observers. I actually thought it was a brave decision, it was based on their review of the drawn game, they felt the kick outs let them down so they opted for a change. Many others criticised them because they felt Clark's saves kept them in that game.
Goalkeepers aren't like outfield players where you can experiment with line ups or positions in the hope of changing the shape of a game so that's why you see so many outfield changes. Changing a goalkeeper doesn't usually tend to yield the same results unless they're injured or having a stinker 'Current thinking' is you find one that works for you and stick with him (unfortunately for the sub keeper).

So would you stick with Paddy?

Personally, I would like to see Paddy replaced between the posts. I would also like to see Paddy tried at midfield or full forward. He is a big strong committed player who would be a good target man and should be well able to win his ball. I know he has his critics but I think he is now at a stage where he will understand that keeping your head and playing for the team is of the utmost importance. I would also suspect Andy and Gerry will be better able to guide him.

I dont disagree with you on this. I am more interested in people#s thoughts on who the goalie should be next year.

Current thinking in Meath is you find one that doesn't work for you and stick with him regardless!
I stick to the position I have said here before- I think goalkeeper is a problem area for us and needs to be changed. I am fairly old fashioned in what I expect from a keeper. Above all, I want a solid keeper who will not do anything stupid. Secondly I want a keeper who can kick out the ball properly, whether that is a long or short kick-out. Shot stopping is actually down the line for me in terms of what I look out for, mainly because there is not a massive difference between most good keepers regarding what they can or can't save. It is rare enough that a keeper will make a save that another competent keeper wouldn't have made, resulting in the winning or losing of a game. It is unfortunately all too common for a keeper to cost his team by dropping a ball he should have caught, or not dominating his square, or messing up a kick-out.

I disagree Anto. I have seen him play a fair few times out the field for Skryne, and he never stood out for me as a potential county player. IMHO he is a decent club player, but no more than that. There are plenty of big strong committed club players out there who are just not good enough to play inter-county. I would put him among them.
Put it this way, if he wasn't already involved with the county team as a goalkeeper, I don't think that too many would be calling for him to get a run as an outfield county player, based on his performances for Skryne.

I honestly think the way the game is played these days it's time that the concept of a sweeper keeper was introduced to gaelic football.

I would like a keeper to break intermittently up the field with a sweeper dropping back for cover.

You read it here first folks....
