Hastings Cup is run by the Longford County Board. If ye don't want to travel to play in it then don't enter it!

Abbeylara is decent pitch, surface wise. But the village itself has very little in it,

Good win for Meath today and they seem to be getting better since that opening defeat to Offaly. If they can somehow have Rowe,Jones,Conlon(J) all available for Westmeath we should progress with a meeting v Dublin.

seen Ronan Jones on the photo of the team after the game. He was in a training top but still good to see him around, maybe there is hope of a return. for some championship. Be great to see James Conlon play, he is a serious talent. 1-3 from play today. Anybody know what the story with Rowe is ?, I do like the look of this team some very good talents and Callaghan is a manager I trust. Can only wonder how good that team would be with Nash and Jones midfield. Also anybody know is Cilles keeper Jordan Browne on the panel ?

Is Browne not just over the age?

I think Callaghan hopes to have Jones,Rowe and Meade available. He didn't rule any of them out.

Who would you pick in the FF line if you had everyone available?

http://www.hoganstand.com/meath/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=235614. Browne was on the 2015 minors so he is only under 20. Definitely still under age. As far as the full forward line I would have McLoughlin (don't know much about him but form is incredible, Rowe and James Conlon. I would then have Thomas O'Reilly at 11. Moriarty at 10 and maybe Campion at 12. That is a seriously strong 6. With a few wing forwards and Dylan Brady (tore up champo last year) on the bench. Have that with Jones, O'Neill, Brían Conlon and Harnan and we have the makings of a very good team

If Jones was back would you out he and O'Neill in midfield?

I'd play O'Neill at full back. That's his best position and where he feels most comfortable. Round pegs in round holes.

As a matter of interest what was the midfield yesterday?

I know they lined up differently to the named selection but didn't hear the positions some lads played in.

I will add that it's unfortunate for the team that the Cilles All Ireland Final is only a few days before the opening round game against Westmeath.

It won't give the likes of Browne and Conlon a great chance which will impact on the team then.

Was at the game yesterday and it was a good win for Meath against decent opposition but I wouldn't be getting overly carried away because we struggled for long stages around midfield and the goals just came at the right time because we were on the back foot for long spells of the game. Ref gave Longford a few dodgy decisions which didn't help our case either.

Defence was solid enough, Lynch was good in goals and the full-back line attacked the ball well, but gave away a few handy frees. Sean Reilly did very well when he switched back to the half back line and was involved in a good few scores. Longford had the upper hand around the middle of the field and its one area Meath need to strengthen up, perhaps Gavin Mc Gowan and Jones would be used in that area.

Forward line was dangerous, although often had to do without a possession for long stages. Mc Loughlin was brilliant throughout and O' Reilly got more involved as the game went on, Mc Donnacha and Skully had a big impact when he came on.

Considering the players missing; Brian Harnan, Conlon, O' Halligan, Rowe, Jones, Meade it looks like a strong U-21 team; but then we have been down that road before!! One major advantage though is that the U-21's havent been involved with the seniors yet so hopefully they will have a lot more collective training done compared to the last few years.

Yeah great decision by county board to insist on that this year

I would assume that James Conlon would still play the game against Westmeath though

I'm not sure who made the decision to leave the u-21 players to train + play with their own squad. Was it the county board or was it a decision made between the seniors and U-21 managers? Either way it was the right decision and hopefully the U-21s can go on a good run this year. I also hope that they take the same enlightened approach to the Junior team, and that it is actually taken seriously this year. There must be a good few lads cut from the senior panel who would be eligible for the Juniors. The U-21s also have some good players from intermediate/junior clubs. If a decent manager was put in charge of the juniors, and they were given some backing by the county board, it could be used as a feeder team for the seniors. giving some promising young junior players a level of training and games that is a step above what they will get at club level. At least then if they are brought into the seniors, the step up in class won't be so big.
