Players Who Were Not On The Meath Panel Last Year.

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

We still have a lot of talented forwards imo..

Graham Reilly
Mickey Newman
Donal Lenihan
Bryan McMahon
Eamonn Wallace
James McEntee
Andy Tormey
Daire Rowe
Shane O'Rourke(if he stays)

But what defenders could we bring in that could help us out?

Here are some players who I thought stood out in championship this year not on panel.
Ruairi O Caoilain Mahonys
Darragh Smyth Mahonys
Darragh Rowe Syddan
Conor Downey Na Fianna
Niall O Reilly Wolfe Tones
Tom McCullen Ballinlough
Chris O Connor Ballinabrackey
Seamus Mattimoe Kells
Jamie Reilly St Michaels
Donal Lenihan Dunboyne(I know he was there for part of it last year)
Karl Mullen Colmcilles

I have to say most others were either county men, too old or ex county men that impressed!!

That's a solid few players Tackle, fair play to you.

Lads would there be any point in looking at Cormac McGuinness again?? I think he left due to work commitments previously so maybe he wouldn't give the time.

On defenders we'd have a few solid ones but I think its a case of getting them playing in their right positions.
Keoghan
McGill
Tobin
McEntee
Harnan

I'm assuming the following are unavailable..
Power, Menton, Burke

The following I think were involved last year and maybe might make a go of it this year
Carty, Judge, O'Coilleann can play in defence too

I said before maybe Stephen Sheppard might be an addition for experience alone i.e a player over 25!!! but we all know MOD's thought on that

interesting times ahead

I think our biggest priority has to be to find a corner back or two. We cant keep taking wing half backs (or even wing-half forwards!) and trying to make corner backs out of them. I know that football has changed in recent years and county corner backs are expected to push forward and even get an odd score. But first of all they have to be defenders, and I reckon we need a good old-fashioned tight-to-the man corner back. Plus a spare one for when he gets injured/suspended/sick of MOD so he decides to quit.

If Power and Burke are gone, then we are also light in the half back line. A half back line of Tobin, Power and Harnan would be decent. Take Power out and I am not sure who fills the gap.

I don't get to see as much club football as I used to, so I wouldn't be familiar with all the players on Tackleberry's list. The ones I do know I would be in general agreement with. But most of them seem to be forwards. Any suggestions as to who might be a candidate for the corner back slot?

I didn't get to Navan yesterday due to work - anyone stand out? I have heard good things about Shorthall from Curragha. I know he is a half back (or half forward) rather than a corner back, but would he be worth bringing along?

Mickey Burke is only 29, why is everyone assuming he will be unavailable.?

Because someone on the internet said so, and if someone on the internet says so then it must be true!!

Firstly Mickey Burke is staying on for next year.

Secondly how many of those commenting on James McEntee playing corner back were in Omagh in July? He was named at corner back but give. A role similar to that of Darragh Smyth with O'Mahonys as a corner back who fracked a specific forward out the field. He actually contested wither the first or second half throw in at midfield. He spent the vast majority of his time in the middle third of the field with barely any spent in the full back line.

The amount of people on here talking through their backsides is astounding. They may call themselves supporters but they need to check the definition of support in the Oxford English Dictionary.

What about Sean Curran from Donaghmore-Ashbourne. He was on the panel and played a few league matches in 2014. Could be an addition to the full back line or half back line.

Sean gets injured a lot and had a row with Micko,so no way back there, hasn't played well enough anyway, possibly due to injury.

Jack,
This is a discussion forum. People might be talking out their arse but as the saying goes Opinions are like arse****s, everyone has one... I've had plenty a debate and falling out with people but everyone is entitled to their opinion be there correct or not.

tackleberry- you obviously see few club matches!! some of the players you have included are not even the best in their positions within their own clubs. Other guys posting about players from junior teams just because the play a good match or two. Are we picking for the Meath Junior team next year? The senior team needs a whole new HB line if we are to progress made up of at least two players who can defend.

Excuse me for having an opinion, personally I believe that the players mentioned are worthy consierations. As a matter of opinion can you pick out a list of players who you think may improve the squad. Who are the players that are better taht their team mates I have mentioned?
As previously stated, MOD has the majority of the players in county, the rest that play well are ex county players, so I accept that some players on the list may not be the best player at their club, but I feel they could improve the county panel if given an opportunity.

Told by a lad at the club that the player in question was promised a run out against Carlow a few seasons ago,and he didn't get it despite been miles ahead.Hard to see how he may join up with MOD at this stage, but would love if they could meant a few bridges so to speak.
