No one has been called up to the panel. There are currently "trials" going on. No panel as such has been picked. It's October.

I didnt really want starting a new topic but, with Bray & Reilly retiring, Menton seemingly taking a year out plus Gillespie also long term injury prone and maybe Mickey Burke retiring it really does behove the new management team to get things right between now and february with regards to identifying new players.

In a sense Micko is nearly back at square one. He needs to identify the best 30 or so players and then get them playing a brand of football. He will need huge support from the clubs in this and should expect it - after all they voted him back in.

We not alone need new players that are ready to hit the ground running on the team, we need leaders on the pitch. It's not like kilkenny blooding a few new players every year into an existing system with leaders already there.

We have no leaders the only possible one is Gillespie if he can get back.Otherwise we will be worse next year in regards lack of leaders..

You seem to have changed your tune Brian. Over on the Intermediate Championship thread, when I said that some posters from North Meath had a chip on their shoulder about the number of Ratoath players on the panel, you called what I said a "pile of steaming B.S."

Nice to see that I have the ability to change opinions around here.

I might have been in a bit of a rant that day ;)

I've always said that I don't care where players are from if they're the best players in Meath. I do think MOD has abandoned players from North of Navan but if he does have the best panel that's fair enough

No worries Brian. I find the 10pm cut off for posting on here both a curse and a regular blessing. Most days I don't get home from work until after 10, so when I get a head of steam up about something I read here, its a pain not being able to immediately respond. I usually find though that by the following morning I have calmed down a bit, and am glad of the fact that I didn't manage to post a rant the night before!

I agree completely that the best players need to be picked regardless of where they are from. If that means 5-7 Ratoath lads, then so be it if they are among the best 30 in the county. Likewise if there are a dozen good lads from the north of the county. I am not sure I agree though that MOD is ignoring lads from north Meath. I would criticize MOD for many things, but not that. I am just not sure that there are that many lads at the moment who would be better than what is already there. Its a cyclical thing really- a good few of the North Meath clubs are at a bit of a low at the minute, and I just don't see the players there. But I don't get to see as much football as I used to, so if anyone has any suggestions as to players from north of Navan who are worth looking at, then I am all ears. (Just please no suggestions about bringing Brian Farrell or Cian Ward back - lets look forward not back).

As mentioned on the other thread, MOD needs to be open to bringing in some players in the 25-30 age bracket and give them a decent chance. Of course bring in young guys but, at the moment, we need some players with a bit of experience and bite as well as talented up and coming players.

I didnt really have specific players in mind saying that & I havent been at a huge amount of games to judge. Just saying that the focus should not just be on younger players which seemed to be the case in recent years. Hopefully players will have been identified in the latter stages of the championship / trials that have been mentioned here.

I don't see too many players in that age bracket who could come in,except for Conor Downey of Na Fianna..

Hi Ziggy,
I'll throw in a few names and i'm open to be opposed on them
Shane Geraghty - lets see whats out there other than Paddy. Conor McHugh doesn't seem to be putting any pressure on Paddy.
Dan Queeney - has been consistent all summer, may be worth a run in HF line
Darragh Smyth - consistent all summer and getting up the pitch for a few scores
Conor Downey - Has to be brought in the way he's performed all summer
Donal Lenihan - I know he's there but deserves a better chance and game time. Scoring well, consistent free taker (think another poster said that) which we need as its in a mess at the moment
Stephen Sheppard - Has been marshalling the Tones defence for years. May be worth another craic on the panel
Alan Forde - I think the county and its dog knows the situation there

I've always said I don't see much club football so I'm open to correction and opposing points of view.

Still think there's more defections/retirements to come from the team. David Bray and Mickey Burke i'df imagine are certainties as they didn't see much game time..

I'd say picking a first choice 15 to start the first championship game could be great fun

I'll hazard an oul guess for giggles

Paddy
Keogy-McGill-McEntee
Tobin-Power-Harnan
Rooney-D Queeney
Downey-Newman-Reilly
Lenihan-McMahon-Wallace

Shane Geraghty - Great Keeper cant see him committing though
Dan Queeney - Accuate but pace would be an issue Rather have him than Newman though
Darragh Smyth - yes I hope he comes in
Conor Downey - Lot of complaints on the size element to our panel he wont improve that but great energy I hope he is an addition
Donal Lenihan - Should get more game time this Spring
Stephen Sheppard - Not dont think he one for me.
Alan Forde - Not interested to committing so wishful thinking

Ya agree generally with Brian and Glenny.

We need a corner back so Dara Smyth could be a good option..

I would be surprised if David Bray,Jamie Queeney,Mickey Burke were back next year,a little birdy tells me that Power may not be joining next year, hope that birdy is wrong!

McEntee is a good footballer but not a corner back imo.

Ziggy, I agree re McEntee. I'd imagine he'll be the loose player in the full back line with the ability to push forward. Keogy as the man marker with McGill on the edge of the square.
