Intermediate Hurling Championship

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

We are a week out from the Hurling Championships and cannot wait. I see there is a senior post up with some great posts to date. Just wondering what are peoples thoughts on the Intermediate,

Group A
St Pats
Ratoath
Na Fianna
Moylagh
Gael Colmcille
Clan Na Gael

I think Na Fianna to top the group with Ratoath in second and Gael Colmcille in third.

Group B
Donaghmore Ashbourne
Wolfe Tones
St Peters Dunboyne
Kiltale
Kilskyre
Drumree

I think Drumree to finish top, Dunboyne in second and Kilskyre in third. Could be a Drumree / Na Fianna final with Na Fianna eventual winners.

First round predictions;
Athboy v Kells - Athboy by 2 - 3, kells going well in football so it could effect hurling.
St.Patricks v Na Fianna - Na fianna easily
Moylagh v Ratoath - Ratoath with ease
Dunboyne v Kilskyre - Dunboyne to cause a first round shock
Wolfe Tones v Drumree - Drumree in a close game
kiltale ashbourne - Kiltale should win this, not sure what to expect from Ashbourne this year

Hi Toon, based on the league results from the weekend, the tones took some hammering from Dunboyne so I cant see the tones coming out of the group. They are in a bad state at present. Facing a relegation in Div 2 A of the hurling league and gave a walkover in the junior game v Na Fianna. Kilskyre have to be fancied to come out of the group.

Moylagh to be relegated not sure, that may be St Pats. Na Fianna must be seen as overall winners,

Glad to be out of intermediate grade as it is getting tougher, Hopefully will be a good hurling year however.

Can't wait for this, love when the championship rolls round again, I reckon Ratoath will top Group A , Colmcilles second and then a scrap between Na Fianna and the rest for third.

Group B is really tough to call, so many good teams and the unpredictability of Ashbourne means they could do something, going well in the league by the look of it but it's only Division 3 so no real test yet. Tones as mentioned in to a relegation playoff.

Athboy vs Kells - Can easily see a draw, but Athboy to shade it by one
Pats vs Na Fianna- Na Fianna by 10+
Ratoath vs Moylough - Ratoath easily

Dunboyne vs Kilskyre- This is gonna be an absolute cracker, two brilliant sides. Draw
Tones vs Drumree- Another close one, but Drumree to just about have enough by two points
Kiltale vs Ashbourne - Should be Kiltale by a decent bit, Ashbourne had a shocker last year and I don't think much has changed. Kiltale by 7

As a Ratoath man myself, I can't see Ratoath doing to well this year, look sluggish and slow throughout the league, missing a few keys members of the team too, for the opening few rounds anyway!! I'll give them quarter final at most!!

I think IHC is a going to be a non contest. Na Fianna to stroll through group and win Final easily. Nothing in this grade to beat them, they probably could make knockouts in senior this year. Good young players mixed with tough older lads give a good balance plus they had the best Manager in Meath hurling by some distance in Pat O'Halloran, that was a major coupe for them. Can only be good for Meath club hurling.

Redman, Na Fianna have beaten Boardsmill, and have pushed Trim and Kiltale close in the league and Brendan Davis respectively.
They may have made knock out stages in weaker Senior group as they would account for Dunderry & Rathmolyan, and possibly O'Mahony's or Blackhall Gaels.

However, the Intermediate hurling grade is competitive. Na Fianna have the most talented players no question, but they are young inexperienced lads. They must prove themselves in September and October against big strong physical teams like Wolfe Tones, Kilskyre and Drumree.

To say that the intermediate is a fore gone conclusion is just downright naïve.
Of course, Ratoath Drumree Wolfe Tones Kilskyre etc will be delighted to be hear you talking Na Fianna up!!

And Kiltale are so strong in senior, they won't be easily beaten in the intermediate either (they won Div 2 league last year)

Interesting year ahead.

Decent game of ball out in Kilmessan, Tones beating Drumree by two points. Perfect conditions for it out there

Went down the road last night to watch Kiltale and Ashbourne, complete annihilation by Kiltale, from the first whistle to last. Ashbourne were like a bunch of headless chickens. Saying that though, theyre up against my own side next so I'm a little wary, but if nothin changes from last night then they're in deep trouble

Ratoath St Pats - Ratoath easily
Tones Kilskyre - Draw
Kells Moylagh - Kells should get over the line
Ashbourne Dunboyne - Dunboyne if Ashbourne are as bad as they were against kiltale again
Drumree Kiltale - Drumree by couple of points.
Na Fianna Athboy - Na fianna easily

Ratoath VS St Pats - Ratoath by at least 8, pitch could cause them some bother though
Na Fianna vs CNG- No chance for CNG. Na Fianna by a lot
Gael Colmcille vs Moylagh - Moylagh to upset the odds by three

Tones vs Kilskyre - Kilskyre didn't really have much of a test vs Dunboyne, Tones in a cracker against Drumree. Close game, Kilskyre by two
Ashbourne vs St.Peter's - Low-scoring game. Both put in shockers in Round 1, but sticking with my own side after watching Ashbourne vs Kiltale. Must win for both given the next few fixtures. Dunboyne by five

Drumree vs Kiltale - Kiltale are looking good, this game will tell a lot about them. Draw

Wolfe Tones vs Kilskyre - Kilskyre by 2 or 3
Kells vs Moylagh - Kells by 6
Ashbourne vs Dunboyne - Dunboyne probably by 4
Drumree vs Kiltale - Drumree by 5
Na Fianna Athboy - Na fianna by 6

With 3 games gone the groups are starting to take shape. Tones and Athboy look like they should top either group and go straight for semi's, a bit surprising but shows how open the champ is. Moylagh look to be in big trouble especially since losing to Pats at weekend. It looks like Ashbourne for rel playoff in the other group.
Na fianna & Drumree should make quarters but other two spots will be battle between kells and Ratoath in group A and kilskyre and kiltale battling it out for the final spot in group B.

Kiltale beating Tones and Ashbourne's comeback against Kilskyre means that there's everything to play for in every game going into the last round of fixtures in Group B. Moylough doomed to the playoff in the other group

So is it Clann na Gael V Drumree and Na Fianna v Wolfe Tones in the semis? Who do you think will win this year. My self I see it as a Clann na gael v Na Fianna final with the athboy side coming out on top

Whatever team comes up, they will be competitive in Senior (which isn't difficult considering Navan Boardsmill rathmolyan and Dunderry are weak). But like Blackhall this year, a quarter final fixture would be the very best they could hope for. Similar to Na Fianna under Cillian Farrell, a quarter final back then was a successful year.
I feel Na Fianna have the most talented hurlers in the Intermediate grade, but lack physicality and maybe their young talented players are still a bit too young.
Athboy are having a great year under Gary Cole relative to the last 4 years. I cannot see them being a senior club for more than a year or 2, were they to win the championship this year, despite the club's footballers being in decline.
Drumree and Wolfe Tones having been knocking on the door for the last few years, but I don't see why they won't come up short again this year. Nothing seems different with both outfits this year.
Athboy Na Fianna Final with Athboy to sneak it !!

Spot on overthehill72. Na Fianna will be back into the senior grade soon either way as they have some fantastic young hurlers coming through. The underage section of the club is being really well run. On the other hand Athboy seem to be relying on a lot of old names and until they sort out the underage teams they'll struggle to survive in senior. Pity too as Meath hurling needs the likes of Athboy in the senior grade
