Meath v Kildare

Not so sure about winning from the line. Tormey, Menton and two three more took game by scruff of the neck and drove us over the line. But some very poor individual displays. But look its a start and two valuable points on the board and a much need boost to confidence

Well it is a win. Nice too see the bit of fight in the 2nd half. An awful lot of work to be done even on the basic skills including free taking . Belief and confidence will improve from grinding out this win. A work in progress !

Stand out players from last night: Menton (ball carrying), Burke (link up play), Tormey (great last 20 mins). Thought McGill did well at no.3 as well

Bert no not won on line. Won by 4 lads taking it upon themselves to push ram and dogged persistance. One of the worst first halves I seen in long while. Kildare are just as bad as us. Its 2 points that's all that matters.

good win but it was more of case that Kildare lost rather meath winning Kildare missed alot of chances second half .it was hard to know what was going on to be honest this is my the first this year and between subs and black cards and trying get to grips with new personal etc.

i am constantly looking to see has meath management learnt anything and last night l think they did the seem to have a game plan and stuck to it.
1st half Meath were awful but i could help thinking that we played Monaghan last year against the same type of deference we had no game and made no changes and game was over after 15 minutes ..last night we didn't kick the played stupidly constantly for kildare sweepers to pick it up we had a more measured approach and kept ball in hand for most part and ran at them.
if there is a marked difference as in a improvement in the second half then you think the management have said something or changed something for the positive i think was the case last night.
for me to only difference was that Meath seem to get bullied by Kildare 1st and stood to them a bit more second half and got stuck in.
positive meath we won but loads of problems we didn't win any dirty 50/50 balls not many ball winners in attack or natural scorers. defense is weak.

Delighted with the win in a very poor game of football,I thought at times we were awful again and could not do the basics right. But the players did show spirit to grind it out and as said some good performances made the difference,Tormey,Menton,Bray drove us on(Menton would be a waste at full back),I also though Reilly was unlucky to get an early black card.I felt sorry for Joey Wallace, but he is not ready for this level, the midfield were decent, and great to see Eamonn Wallace back..

A word on the forward line,it must be said that most of the balls into them were awful,we gotta get our passing right before we judge, luckily Kildare were woeful too.
I know it is a few weeks, but we could struggle in Roscommon.

Great to get the win last night even though the performance wasn't spectacular, it didn't really look likely when we were 9 5 down. Accuracy seems to be our biggest problem at the moment, lads kicking awful wides, terrible passes into the forwards and Newman struggling from the frees, although he is much better than he showed. Tormey and Menton played very well and it was great to see E Wallace back aswell, really hope he can get back to his best in the next few months because he can be very dangerous for us in the corner.

Cabbage Yes i agree with your asesment Mento strong going forward with the ball just seems to go AWOL at times. Think he has now nailed a spot at 7 ish. We should see MCguill at 3 again .2 midfielders show promise. Tormey well done for taking responsibility when needed. Newman just hope he can recover his form including frees.Stephen Bray a great trier still . Liked the old style Meath grit at times in 2nd half. Very concerned at the many basic errors in ball skills.[MOD not to blame there as we assume that is part of any players toolkit at inter county level] also concerned at how slow some forwards are to show for the ball by using open spaces. Alarmed at Mickey Bourke playing as a forward from no 4 . We need Mickey on the team for sure for his workrate .would have switched him with Dalton at 11 . Roscommon and Cavan will be major hurdles for us for sure. Yes we are really up against it.We have an awful lot to do. HOPING Newman can recover form. Eamonn Wallace can start next match. We can start believing in ourselves even with all the work to do. Confidence and belief will help to instill a more positive attitude. Not pretty to look at but very valuable on the learning curve for the younger lads especially at midfield. Challenging times ahead for sure, but in Meath that is the way we like it.

we really tightened up in the 2nd half, didnt give kildare an inch. we worked hard as a team & i for 1 would be happy if we did that week in week out. we're seriously in need of a backup freetaker, newman is off form & paddy is probably on average only scoring 1 in 3 or 4. we're lucky kildar decided to play defensive cyinical football because if they ran at us it could have been a different story. davy dalton at centre back didnt look fit & could have been taken to the cleaners by another team. havin said all that it was a great win & now we have to follow it up with a battling performance against a good roscommon. a good performance is more important than a win in my opinion

some people are praising our management for wat they done last night and i cant understand it i thought when reilly got black card that carroll should have came on or even queeney unless they have injuries i dont kno about i thought j wallace tobin who came on for reilly and d bray were not up to scratch so i dont kno how some of you think that the game was won on the line we were very lucky and only for 3 or 4 lads that did play well and dug us out of a hole we would have been beaten only kildare were so bad any other team would have beaten us last night thats 2 games in a row that we have not performed well at all and some people on here cant see that because we got the win but i think it was a bad performance again and something has to be done during the break because we will not get away with playing like that against roscommon or down

Thought it was a poor performance and a poor game of football from two very average sides. Kildare at one stage in the second half had 15 men within their 65 metre line. Meath had no clue how to break down their defence. The big navan crowd grew frustrated about this lateral passing but everytime Meath kicked the ball it was sweeped up by Kildare. The only time we seemed to score was when we hit Kildare on the great with off the shoulder runners. Kildare were not great shakes either, their majority of their scores were sensational 40 yard points that are. It going to go over everyday

We won ugly, but we won and despite the early setback with GR's black card. That's progress. We are now Kildare's bogey team in the way there were ours a few years ago. Great to come from behind and win a close game. Both sides wasted plenty of chances.

Failing to track runners at kickouts and win breaking ball around centrefield cost us for much of the match. But they got to grips with it eventually and tightened up. Some determination from Menton to run at and through any number of Kildare players at a crucial time. I thought Sean Tobin did well when he came on (and kicked his frees also).

Overall the performance wasn't too dissimilar from Galway. Forward play still poor. Differences were attitude was better, Burke wasn't exposed, Kildare were worse than Galway. But good result and Conor mcgill very impressive again.

By the way guys I would seriously consider playing McGill corner back when Reilly is back for the championship,I beleive it is now 3 weeks until we play Roscommon. That game will be our hardest game imo..

Our neighbours might do us a favour yet. Hopefully they do not fade late on.

ZIGGY Roscommon will be a major challenge. Their full forward line is their strongest line . Mc Guill should start at 3 IMO. Corner backs will need to be defenders primarily no matter who they are. I understand Kevin's return is by no means certain at all, which of course would be a big loss. At this stage Roscommon would have to be favourites. Some of our lads are starting to believe, and use their natural instincts as footballers to add grit and determination, which has been in short supply up to now. We badly need those 3 weeks to work on basics which is very frustrating. However at this early point it does seem physical fitness is better than last year. Still think mental preparation will be vital together with vastly improved footballing basics before we can say real progress has been made. A work in progress !!
