NFL Galway v Meath

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Tactics, mentality and fitness are going to very important during the league and the championship of course because I honestly think we have a pretty good squad of players, provided we stay relatively injury free. I think we have a good centre field, good forwards, the backs are a little shaky but Keogan and Tobin in particular are very good players who can hopefully give the other lads a lift, Menton is a good attacking option and could be worth a go in a more advanced role.

Yeah I put fitness at the top of the list, because if you are not fit enough the other aspects don't really matter! :)

That's true ziggy, I just think we have a fair bit of talent, it's only fitness, tactics and mentality that are letting us down......so we're nearly there :-)

With the lads from Corofin not available to Kevin Walsh this is a must win match for Meath especially as Galway are licking their wounds after losing yesterday and been so exposed in the backs yesterday, their half backs like to attack and get their name on the scoresheet so Meath should exploit that the way Roscommon did yesterday, with two of the Rossie goals came from 5 on 2. I agree with posters on here about Wallace being on the light side but still think there is a role for him with the speed he has got. I am sure a lot of ye disagree with me when I think he deserves to be on the panel and used as an option from the bench to run at and take on backs late in a game.

See Examiner tips Galway and Roscommon to go up, Meath to finish 5th. I would be more concerned about Roscommon. Think we may be a bit ahead of Galway at this stage, they will take a bit of time to settle in under Walsh, may be a good time to play them. Conditions will play a big part on Sunday, brass monkey weather.

Had forgotten that the Corofin contingent won't be available this weekend, which makes it a good time to get Galway. Under the circumstances, I feel a win here is a must if we're to push for promotion. Well capable of gettin' it but attitude and application has to be spot on.

A few Galway people reckon only 2 of those players at most could get into the Galway 15.Galway will have an excellent midfield available,I think we may lack experience in that sector.

The Great Glenny is quiet worried about this game. Meath have always found it hard to win in Galway and when you add in our poor away record in the League Ok we bet Laois and Louth last year but over OBrien, Banty years and in last 2 years away wins have been few. I am a fan of ODowd and feel he is going about things in the correct manner. We are way off Dublin and I feel 2013 we where lucky not to get beat by more and I feel we will make a 4th Leinster Final but a 4th straight defeat by Dublin will be hard to take but that is where it stands.

Galway are no great shakes but I think they will win Connacht this year, Mayo will not and Roscommon are their main threat. Meath are fit and I hope Rooney can win possession for us but we need more cover at the back as Keoghan cannot continue to plug the dyke on his own, McGill I hope can help him while Tobin has a bit of badly needed pace. Menton gives something going forward as he is a strong runner. I feel up front we are in trouble I hope Biggie will get a decent run of form but the other starting forwards showed little v Dubs as Newman and ORourke a sub and a goalie got 1-4 between them and Sean Tobin hit a few frees add in D Tobin and Menton and Burke pointing from defence our starting forwards did not do enough. That is a concern.

This game will be close and I hope for a narrow Meath win but cannot see us getting enough scores for that to happen.

I ted to agree and especailly with your comment about the forward line, the good thing is though, that Galway people are complaining about their half back line too concerned about going forward rather than defending, now if that is the case,Reilly could have a field day,Tormey is also capable of chipping in with a few scores,as for the full forward line,we could well be too dependent on Newman, especially without the likes of E.Wallace and Cillian O'Sullivan..

Granted that Corofin only have 2 starters, also 3 more on the bench. I'm all for anything that weakens the opposition as we'll need all the help we can get. Hence it's better to get them early then later on when they'll be at full strength. Looking to the game itself, my main worry is our ability to win enough ball around the middle. Galway have a good midfield pairing that have been together a few years, whereas the Meath midfield seems to be constantly changing. Also, in the reverse fixture last year Galway scored 4 goals in Navan, while we managed a win on the day it proved a false dawn. A repeat of conceding 4 goals and we certainly won't be getting a win.
Early days though and lots to be optimistic about, here's hoping for a good performance and a win to set the tone for the season.

Be very interesting to see if O'Dowd goes for McGill at full back.

It will be very interesting to see to what extent team attitude and application has improved from last year. Also how game is approached in a positive manner. How sideline reads and reacts to play pattern as it develops. Teamwork, Leadership and proper preparation, and we will be promoted. Without that we continue with half baked excuses, and who plays ,and plays where is secondary to the above. Some positive signs were evident in second half last day, and lets hope that is the start of something new and fresh. Best of luck to all . 2014 gone,2015 and were are back with a bang !!!

Sorry to disagree with you from the outset Glenny but Mayo will win Conncaht. Galway will improve under Walsh particularly when they get the Corofin lads back but Mayo are still ahead of us and they will beat us in Galway. We havent narrowed the gap that mush in a year. Lads Finian Hanley is just back from his honeymoon and he was gone a number of weeks so hes out. Paul Conroy is injured as is Jihnny Duane. Were down Hannley (honeymoon), Duane(an excellent defender Liam Silke (Corofin), Gary Sice (Corofin), Michael Lundy (Corofin), Ian Burke (Corofin) and Paul Conroy(injured). That's 8 players who will probably all start championship. Ian Burke is probably questionable but the other 7 will and they will not only start but they will be our best players. I dont know the extent of yere own absentees on Sunday but if yere any good at all ye will beat this Galway team. What is the story? Will ye have a strong team. Ye could have scored 8 goals last YAR and that was a much better Galway side than the one that will line out on Sunday so I'm thinking a Meath win for sure. Bert get over 2001 :-) PJ destroyed ye. Time to let it go.

Honest assesment there Hawkeye, our team selection will be interesting, particarly the full back line and midfield, I feel we will have experience up front with both Brays and Graham Reilly starting and I have a feeling O'Dowd will start Jamie Queeney. It's an important game for both teams, win and your off to a great start in a division where it could be easy to gain momentum, lose and your on a low in a division where it is equally easy to hit a downward spiral, it's that type of division. It's a close game to call but given the absentees Gakeay have I certainly feel we can take something from the game, however we never got anything easy in Galway and Sunday will be no different.....
