It will be interesting to see if any new faces appear that have not been involved in the minor panels for the last 2/3 years, too often the U-21 team is based on previous minor teams, these players may have been outstanding at underage level but a lot of them have not really played that well at adult level yet where as other players who didn't really stand out at minor level develop at a later stage and may be better players for the U-21 grade.

I seen a good few games at intermediate level this year and one of the best players in the grade was Jonnie Reilly from Ballinlough, a really top class wing back. I think he is U-21 for the next couple of years but never featured for Meath at minor level.

Ya you are correct, players often develop differently etc, sure John McDermott never played under-age for Meath as far as I know..

Cavan 1-15, 0-5 Meath. Poor performance with both teams missing lots of players I think... what did others make of it?

I was told Cavan had been together training since October and Meath had their first training session this week

If that is the case, then a result like that is to be expected..

But why would you have your Under 21 team training since October?? Seems a bit much to me..

To be fair, that is a fairly weak side would posters agree?

It was the most disorganised Meath team that I ever witnessed in my time of following Meath teams.

To be fair that was to be expected,I don't think any of the U21s from last year played, and a lot of them are training with the seniors.

While it may have been a weak side, their is no excuse for how disorganised it was.

Hard to see the point of the Hastings cup for Meath this year if they are going to play weak sides. For example they play Saturday again, that is the same day the seniors play.So I'm guessing another weak team.

Remember they have only trained once so the disorganisation was to be expected

Exactly,if you have a team well organized after one training session, you should be given a medal!

Anyway I have a feeling the u21 management are more focused in trying to win Leinster this year..

Should we be looking to start our u21 preparations sooner?
Obviously there is a benefit to it (just look at cavan and kildares improvement at the grade over the past few years).

But it is catch 22 as you risk burnout of the players and there is also the impact on club football. Difficult one to call.
