Meath have completed their "Group" A games , its all out of their hands now.
Our final position is Plate final unless our competition help us out , we are looking to Wicklow to beat Cavan , to allow us to go thru on score difference to the Cup final . Which is highly unlikely . So the most likely scenario is a Plate Final against the number two in Group "B" which is Westmeath . Come on Wicklow ;-)
Monaghan have come to the party with a weakened group this year from what I've been told , and have not notched up a win yet from 2 games , I don't expect them to better Dublin next weekend .
That been said , Dublin , may play Cavan , unless Wicklow do us a favour
Meath play Westmeath in the Plate Final .
With Louth Vs Longford for the shield final .

I'm sorry lads but I just don't agree with anybody on this making the argument that our underage is well managed.

At county level, we haven't won a minor Leinster since '08 our last AI was probably well before that. At U21 level we're even worse, I think our last Leinster was '01 but I'm open for correction. I've lost sight of how many times I've been told Meath have a good bunch coming through because they won the Gerry Reilly only for that very same bunch to completely disappear come Minor. I want to know what's going on in them two years? Most likely the answer is very little, Meath have very little full time football coaches in the county and when you look at counties that are successful at underage (Tyrone, Dublin etc.) it doesn't take a genius to understand why we're behind. Our county board have invested a huge amount of money into the development of Dunganny, and for what? To say we have a nice lovely looking development ground full of unqualified or very minimally qualified volunteer parents coaching the underage Meath teams? I mean no disrespect to these volunteers but I just think money spent on full time coaches would be better spent.

Club level is beyond a joke as well (It's lovely to see that Nepotism is still alive and well within the underage structures of the GAA but that's a discussion for another day.) You can have a division 1 final with one team beating the other team by a cricket score, and it happens all too often for me to believe that our underage structures are competitive. Our U16 club league might run for a few weeks in the summer with a heap of games all bunched together then when it's over the young lads mightn't kick another ball until after Christmas. Again it happens all too often for my liking.

I could write on this all day but I think I've gotten the majority of my opinion across, so in short no I don't think our underage is working and it will continue to be dysfunctional until we address the basic organization at club level and the coaching at county level.

Think at under 13 and 14 and 15 as many players as possible from every club should be played in development games. Possibly regional teams to play during summer months with maybe a regional manager reporting into a Development manager. These regional managers should try to attend as many club games as possible to see if club players on his region are developing during the season. Not a big fan of Trials as often the best players don't play well and especially if they are on their own , not knowing the other lads . I think especially at under 13/14 their should be a few players from every club involved not having 6 six from 1 club and none from another club as I presume these games at County level are not competitive.

Bear , your thought s on regionalising the County is very good , and the inclusivity of all clubs is also good , meaning clubs in Meath at the Lower end of the Divisional table also get some of their players coached to a higher standard than at club level , thus hopefully improving their clubs lot in the long run . All positive , and I think that in the last number of years the U14 /U15s were progressed that way , well from 20145-to 2015 anyway , This year it does not appear to have been the same roadmap taken . .

Completely agree with you. I have seen a number of kids over the years getting picked by the managers (most of the time theirs sons and sons of club delegates) go to these trials only to fall to the side at u15/16 grade and other young lads who develop late get over looked as they don't have the right surnames.

I would be of the opinion that every kid should be given a shot up to U16's in some sort of regional team.

I think it is improving from what I have seen. You do make some good points,But I have seen a number of our underage teams been well coached lately. Now I don't know what coaching badges the coaches have etc,but I can see that the teams are well coached by watching the games.
I see your point with minors and U21's,but this years minor team were very very unlucky. They have a good team for sure..

Ziggy your right but my understanding is that each club is limited to the amount of players they can send to these and they are more often or not based on 1 or two trial sessions.

Most clubs CAN send 5 players. Just most smaller clubs would not suggest 5 players, some of them infact just suggest 1.I know Slane for example sent 5 originally for the current U15's when they started out.

ok didn't realise there were regional teams already playing at under 13/14 level this year. that is good to hear. Just hope that there are 5 to 6 players from every club playing in these regional teams helping them to develop .I certainly hope this is happening as a lot of emphasis is put how how good teams are at winning games at these ages and not on how they d also roevelop and include as many kids as possible in our games which are non competitive I presume.

As far as I know, yes it is worked like this..

Just a point on the Primary School situation..

The problem here would be the fact that a lot of kids,in towns like Ratoath,Ashbourne,Dunboyne,Dunshauglin even Navan etc have a lot of kids wearing Dublin jerseys, despite these kids been from Meath. So how would this work? A young lad (8) who lives on my road has never lived in Dublin, but he is Dublin mad.Now there is a lot of them,if we do this coaching in schools, how many of these kids would actually want to play for Meath?

valid point re these kids as a lot their parents are Dublin supporters all there lives Maybe when these kids get a bit older and are playing competitively in Meath they might change but cant see it happening . Just checked re under 14 structure in Meath with our club . Only Trials were held on one day with no regional teams in operation.at all. I think this is quite a poor way of operating an under 14 team .

don't know . Hopefully they should rectify it for rest of year Apparently a lot of under 14 players were playing soccer and rugby that trial day he said. it is a pity for those young lads. Not a lot of thought went into it by Meath underage . Still think there should be coaches from all regions of meath involved at these formative years of learning football and how the games are played and not having the the scoreboard the be all and end all. Do anyone know these coaches and what clubs they are from ?

Anyone know what's happening with the group of 2000s for next year? Will there be a once off 17s championship? I know it was being talked about but haven't heard anything since

All development squads are different depending on who is in charge... They normally happen at the beginning of the year when players are playing different sports. This years u15 trials were held in April I think, yet the u15 leagues don't start till September !!!

At u15 they'd 2 trials to pick the 4 regional squads. Then each squad played each other once to pick the final squad of 50 I think.

This is the thing with Dublin people living in Meath ..they will drop there young lad of at their nearest Gaa club like its a creche, you spend 10 years training the young lad to be the best ! For what ? Plus Dublin people living in Meath dont support the clubs in the same way they support the clubs they came from in Dublin financial. If their was fundraiser in their old club in Dublin they will help out and spend but if their is a fundraiser in their new adopted club here in Meath they will watch coronation street, they are a burden on resources and time,Anything we do with a young Dublin lads now will only come back and bite us in the back side later !

I know Meath people who are living in Dublin and their kids dont get the same treatment or coaching as Dublin kids in the same Gaa club...why?

I think Meath football really needs help from croke park the same way as Dublin and if not a bigger financial package ...because theoretically speaking the second Dublin team is going to come from Meath and i dont mean Jim Gavin A or Bs but another Team in leinster !

Spot on,it is a serious issue..

I do a bit of coaching with small kids. Now kids are kids I will treat them all equally. But many of them in my club are wearing Dublin jerseys. They are from Meath and been brought up in a club in Meath. You wonder with the one's that will continue up the ranks and eventually play for the club, will they use their heads and play for Meath development squads(if they are good enough) or look to go to Dublin? Now at this stage they would be 12/13,probably not at the stage to think logically but to be influenced by (in most cases) Dublin parents.
Will it become a situation were these kids who are 4,5,6 etc who are learning in clubs like Ashbourne,Dunboyne,Ratoath all their lives go on and play for Dublin at varies levels??

Dublin get serious amount of funding from the Gaa and government ,while us here in Meath are depending on the kindness of strangers !

Gaa and government have to realise that Dublin Gaa does not mean county Dublin any more ! Meath ,Kildare and Louth have the same problem with young kids at there local Gaa clubs wearing Dublin jerseys and their only ambition is to make their parents proud someday and play for Dublin not Meath not Kildare or Louth ! Dublin under-age players system comes from Dublin ,Meath ,Kildare and Louth etc etc..now that one hell of a scary thought !

So the big wigs in the Gaa are telling us to catch up ? Old tin men living in a modern world !

I often wonder how in 20 years time what way will people look back at the Gaa people at the very top in Croke park who stood back and did nothing or didn't even try to help or said there wasn't even a problem ..its mind boggling !

And yet a dimwit like me could fix it :/
