He's not a bad player, but one of those defenders that when he doesn't get forward and support,he doesn't bring much to it.

regarding ellis, I think he would fit well into the system meath are trying to play - as a deep wing forward! plenty of pace and well able to get up and support the attack. Though not sure if he is better than the current crop

No,we have better players to do that role,Alan Forde could be called back too..

I think the post on young players is not the most important part of this, it should be the best players not in the Meath panel,

Based on last weeks Q/F I would like to see Gerry Farrelly, Stephen Sheppard, Alan Callaghan and Jamie Queeney given league time this year to see if they can contribute. I feel we need backs and with Sheppard now playing at no3 and Farrelly would be good options, and midfield would be Callaghan and Queeney

You can't call players up to the Meath panel based on Quarter Final ties.. Still not sure about Queeney,Meade plays brilliantly at club level, but does not offer much to the county team.I would be surprised if there is a better midfielder in Meath than Conor Gillespie

Just saying at QF stage it is the more serious nature of club football. To be fair the names I have mentioned are very good players and have been showing that all year. I suppose that my point really is that age is not just the key thing and sometimes players can be deemed old but they are not i.e Sheppard, playing senior football for over 8 years and still only about 24/25

Ya I agree with you,I thought a few years ago Sheppard looked good, but he was given chances and never really took those chances. Is he worth another chance? Maybe,I don't know..
Is Callaghan better than the midfielders currently on the Meath panel?

There are players being mentioned who I would consider not good enough (just like some of the players on the current county team who are not good enough). I am all for giving junior and intermediate players trials but there is a big step-up from junior to senior. Brian, the player you mentioned was given a torrid time by the player he was supposed to be man marking in the first half. One swallow never makes a summer and one needs to asses a player over a number of matches for consistency. We do need player who can man-mark as well as being able to go forward and use the ball well. None of the county players in action over the weekend made any mark and certainly were not the best players on view in their respective matches.

Browncows cheers for the update, the player i mention has been on a few team of the weeks so said i'd ask. I'm not an avid attendor of club games so i'd never suggest this or that player when i don't know if they're good enough myself. I know some of they guys here would be in attendance at a lot of games so was eferring to their knowledge.

I'd agree with your point on a few man amrkers but we can't just have man markers as a man on man system simply doesn't work at present. You need a zonal marking game too and WHB's who can nip up the pitcha and grab a few scores but who can defend as well. juicy o'connor was ideal for that role but seems to have been jettisined for some reason. I think the HB lines needs to be solid and it hasn't been in a long time. DK at CHB seems to be working but its robbing peter to pay paul as we then lose our best man marker.. agh for a team of Donal keoghan's

Alan Forde looks like he is coming back to his fitness level of 2012. Will be a great addition to the half forward line particularly when he tracks back and makes runs from his own half. This was sadly lacking this year which put a lot of pressure on Meath backs.

Alan Forde is the type of lad when fit,he works his sicks off,got pace and bit of strength, and is a half forward always willing to work back.I would welcome him back with open arms

Nicky is a good player for the bracks , he does not score a lot , he is good in the full back line , not in the half back line , as for county no ,

Doitmyway how can you say that? Honestly Nicky is definitely worth a try on his form. We all know club and county are 2 completely different things but he is one of the best backs in county and therefore HAS to be given a chancein oO'Byrne at least and probably league. If he doesn't work out then so be. But it would be verging on stupidity not to give him a few run outs.

lads tbf to MOD if there's one thing he will do it is that he'll give players a chance
The O'Byrne cup players like Judge, Forde etc will get a run and if O'Dowd thinks they're ready he'll keep them about if not they'll be gone.
in 13 he gave the likes of Cormac Rowe and Stephen Crosbie a chance, they did ok but unspectacular and we're gone come Championship time. I'd imagine the same will happen this year too.
