Replying To foreveryoung:  "Who'd you have instead? Personally, I preferred Martin Furlong as a 'keeper. However, I'd find it difficult to make a case, even for Furlong, over Cluxton. No goalkeeper, arguably no player, has dominated their position so well for so long, or influenced the game as much as Cluxton has."
I have to admit I am not a die hard football follower but I don't understand all the hype around Cluxton. How can a goalie change the game. How does he dominate his position. The same goes for Hurling. A goalie can go matches without making a save. I know puckouts have become an important part of the game but in football 90% of kick outs go about 15 meters. I have great respect for goalkeepers in both codes and you will win very little with a poor one. However I don't see how a keeper can dominate or change the way a game is played.

Replying To CTGAA10:  "Canuck a lot of what you said is very true..I was giving Flanagan the benefit of the doubt but when I looked back again it was a dangerous and very careless challange which could very easily have been red..think everyone agrees gillane should have gone,no matter how people saw it,he struck with the Hurley that's a red...I said in another post the antics of Barrett were awful,he rolled around ground roaring..if I'm right he got up and competed for throw in..he also managed to finish the game ..in 2019 the same man under a Richie Hogan challange went down as if shot by a sniper, again he managed to finish the game..I have mentioned previously that players roaring and rolling around the ground is now a feature in all games and it needs to be wiped out.."
Tipp seem to be the worst offenders of playing for a foul. Any tap and they are rolling around on the field. I don't know if they are told to do i tbut, watching the U-20 last night they are at it also. If a player needs medical attention on the field for more than a few seconds he shoul have to go off for a 10 minute proper evaluation.

He has the skills to play in any era. Both feet ,long range points if a goal was on he went for it and great reader of the game. Not too mention backed down from no one. Shame to see the greats go but it just opens up an opportunity for the next great group of players to come on. Feels the same as when DJ retired.

Replying To Cockney_Cat:  "Can we have some sort of understanding and sympathy for referee's decisions. He (or she) make split second decisions on what they see in a moment in time. Unlike the vast majority of us, they do not have access to replays (slow motion) from different angles."
The foul was a split decision, the penalty and sending off wasn't. He had time and may have consulted his linesman. Anyway the powers that be have ruined football and have hurling in their sites now. I will say this isn't the 1st time this ref has been a major talking point after a big game.

Kilkenny V Waterford - 4 Like(s)

Replying To Canuck:  "I am going to rant. I never blame refs and always defend them even against my own team but that was absolutely scandalous. In the first quarter every time a Kilkenny player got bottled up he gave a free. If he applied the same to Jamie Barron he would have 10 frees on his own. Once Kilkenny got well ahead he began to give the odd one to us at the wrong end of the field. Guess what he started again when it got down to two points. One in particular Ryan threw up the ball and caught it again, got challenged and a free to Kilkenny. Look I have the greatest respect for Kilkenny and hate making our win about refereeing but if we had got pipped it would be a sore point for ever more. Looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully we can put it up to the winners."
Canuck I have great time for your opinions some I agree with others I don't. Enjoy the well deserved win today don't worry about the ref. You have a great day coming up look forward not backwards. Relish that Cahill has you playing real hurling not that gimmick stuff McGrath had you playing. Write about Gleeson playing the way he suppose to play, how Bennett took the game by the scruff of the neck when it needed to be done. I hope you win it now Cahill will bring everyone back to earth this week and it should be a great All Ireland. One note as a Kilkenny man I was proud to see our lads taking a few belts and not rolling around on the ground trying to get someone a card. Very sporting match no dirt and played by 30-40 real men. Good luck to Waterford.

Cody Staying Another Year With Kilkenny But When Should He Move On? - 4 Like(s)

Replying To Ban:  "100% I think the real issue that day was the fact that Barrett was on the field as his action on Hogan earlier was also a stone wall red card, and in full view of the ref."

Replying To catch22:  "Are you mad or what ? How would you have Joe Canning, Seamus Callanan and Eoin Kelly in the team. Surely there must be a few Kk forwards you could put in there and be done with it. ;)"
Did you not see the subs. I was trying to fair Canning, Callinan and Kelley were very good but they would be the 1st 3 coming off.

Galway V KK - 4 Like(s)

Replying To Breezy:  "Strength and conditioning is the one thing you can really work on with with an average team to make them better so if that's the problem then it is Cody is the problem"
Cody is never the problem. No manager has ever gotten as much out of his players as Cody. Both Limerick last year and Galway this year have more talent then Kilkenny but they don't have whatever Cody drills into his players. Now Limerick or Galway could come back and beat Kilkenny this year but, if they do they will have to play their best for 70 minutes. As long as Cody is on the sideline Kilkenny will be a factor in any competition they play in.

Joe Canning Retiring - 3 Like(s)

Replying To Mailman98:  "Take no notice. I guarantee you Joe would love to play with this Limerick team. With the exception of Daithi and David Burke and Conor Whelan for Galway Joe played with very few men worthy of being on the same field as him. This Limerick team have winning mentality in every position. I'm pretty sure it played a part in Joe's decision to retire that he saw no prospect of Galway getting the better of them for many years to come."
Terribly insulting to the players Joe played with. I would bet Joe would disagree with that statement.

Whatever you are doing in the present. If Dublin won 5 in a row 10 years ago and Kerry were getting on top of the list right now i would rather Kerry. In the present i would rather be Dublin. If anyone else win 2 or 3 in the next 2 or 3 years i would rather be them. It is what have you done lately in all sports.

O'Rourke On The GPA - 3 Like(s)
Great article in the Independent on the role of the GPA. I was at Citifield a couple of weeks ago. An enjoyable day but I don't know the purpose of it. If you want to promote Hurling play Hurling. I wouldn't go out to watch whatever they were playing again. Seems the money spent would have done a lot of good in the weaker counties and clubs. Watching the Munster club final yesterday would remind anyone what the GAA is suppose to be about. A titanic battle between players who would give anything for their club. As usual once big money is introduced to an organization huge problems follow, it takes great leadership to manage the situation. Love watching the club championships even the bad weather adds to it, even though the players should be allowed to play in the warmer weather. If you ever want to see what the clubs mean to players watch Tommy Walsh's interview after he won the Kilkenny Intermediate county Final. These are the teams and supporters that should be benefiting from money instead of 4 county teams going to NY to play some odd ball game.

Winter Hurling - 3 Like(s)

Replying To AwbegRover:  "I sat and watched the three matches on TV over the week-end. Crokes v Ballacolla, Midleton V Kilmallock and Ballygunner v Loughmore. The best way to describe all three was that they "were a shambles". This was not due to the players and they have to be admired for giving their all. Four factors contributed to this 1. The time of year 2. Playing under lights 3. Awful refereeing decisions and 4. The stupidity of the suits in Croker of whom half never struck or kicked a ball in their life. Players are going to be seriously injured if something is not done about it."
Don't understand how moving the All Irelands helped club hurling when they are still playing in the winter. You are 100% correct bad enough they are playing in December but under lights also. Someone will get seriously hurt.

2021 Hurling Championship - 3 Like(s)
Limerick are the favorites but recent history is not on their side. If you take Kilkenny out of it the last team to win 2 in a row was Cork in '04 and '05. However they have an endless supply of big good hurlers and a very good man in charge. I think Davy has great shock value, he can come into a set up and light a fire under players for a short time but he doesn't have great shelf life. I would imagine his act could get old with players after a few years. Tipp have great hurlers the question is how much is left in the old guards. They were great sevants to Tipp hurling but, eventually you come up against young legs and you are left behind. They may have another year left. Fun team to watch play. Galway are Galway can be the best team on Earth one day and not so great the next. Have some good young players that could spur them on. If they get it right on the day they can beat anyone. Clare seem to have a lot of issues with in house fighting between the county board, which is terrible for a team trying to prepare for the championship. Cork I can't wrap my head around they are a fustrating team to watch. Some mistakes they make are hard to believe. Waterford are the big question can they push on from last year. Waterford are right there, I think what they are missing is a star forward. A Callinan, Reid or Canning, if they had one they would be right there with Limerick. lastly is Kilkenny they have a star and some tested players plus they have Cody. I don't think they are good enough to win an All-Ireland but if they get to a semi-final I wouldn't want to be the team playing them. Well that is an amatuers opinion on the whole thing hopefully we will get crowds back at the games and have a great championship.

The Sunday Game - Awful Coverage - 3 Like(s)

Replying To baire:  "I'm surprised that RTÉ can't see that it's unprofessional to ask recently retired players, eg B Cummins, H Shefflin & J Tyrell, to act as pundits and to comment on ex-teammates in major games."
What about bringing Barry Kelly on for his opinion on the red card. Here is a Ref who put Shefflin off for nothing against Cork in 2013 and came back the next year and tried to hand Tipp the 2014 final on one the worst calls in All-Ireland history. Thank God Hawk Eye was in place because he surely would have given Tipp the point.

Replying To UtahBlaine:  "Ahem! Colin Fennelly,Richie Power,Eoin Larkin, Richie Leahy, John Donnelly and even Tj wouldnt be slouches in drawing the refs attention if they thought they were being fouled.Plenty of them in Galway too in case you might think I'm blinkered"
I am talking about a player rolling around trying to get a player carded or put off. Kilkenny do not try to get players put off. Tommy Walsh hit across the face in '09 right back up, JJ Delaney hit across the face in '12 right back up both offending players put off. Michael Rice hand destroyed by a wild pull in '12 was never the same player after walked straight off the field no theatrics. TJ Reid knee cap broken on a wild pull '12 no theaterics, Richie Hogan pile drived in '19 against Cork right back up. None of these offending players were put off. Big difference between trying to draw a foul and having someone put off. Cody has been on record saying as long as he is in charge Kilkenny will never play into that nonsense.

Time For Someone In GAA Authority To Say STOP - 3 Like(s)
Football around the country is gone very bad. There is no Leinster or Munster championships. The 2 finals were dreadful. Galway and Roscommon was ok but at no point did you think Galway wouldn't win it. The Ulster final was absolutely terrible. The style of play in that watch would put you to sleep. There are a lot of problems in football. With all the tinkering they have done with rules and formats for the Championship it seems a complete mess. I don't know where you would begin to start fixing it but, looking forward how many competitive games are on the horizon. I see Kerry and Dublin Final and do not see either having much trouble getting there. The GAA made changes for the sake of change without addressing some of the real problems.

Tipperary Hurling Final - 3 Like(s)

Replying To Oldertourman:  "So limerick cant take points from out the field. Did you notice the points Peter Casey got from either side of the field, with his first and second touch of the ball, after coming on in an All Ireland Quarter Final or some of the points Declan Hannon, including the two crucial opens against Galway, Diarmuid Byrnes, Darragh O'Donovan and Gearoid Hegarty have got from out the field in big games. You mention Cian Lynch. Cian, great player though he is, has often gone for points from long range but was seldom on target with them. He now more often than not supplies the ball elsewhere, to better placed players, with a more successful return from long range effort. I think Gatha a game that does not change will wither and die. Back in far off 1897 Tullaroan and Kilfinane played in an All Ireland Final-in Tipp town I think. On the day the KK boys were in for a shock. The Kilfinane lads brought a new tactic to their first final. It was a skill called hook and block. These tactics were effective on that long ago day and Kilfinane won narrowly. No doubt critics of the 'new fandangled idea' reckoned it should be stamped out at once before 'it destroyed the game'. However these things are now some of the great skills of the game."
Agree to a point. Football has changed and they keep bringing new rules in to get back some of the basic skills. Like I said new is not always better. The game has skills that made these games great. If new tactics take those skills away in my opinion it is not good for the game. Nothing is going to stop change I am fully aware of that but I hope all the skills that made the games great aren't lost to tactics.

Football Is Finished - 3 Like(s)
The way football is played today is a big problem. This Dublin team is being argued as the best ever. This game of hold the ball is unbelievably boring. 3 or 4 times I left the room while the game was on only to come back and Dublin were still playing keep away. I know you can't argue teams from different generations but I will take the great Kerry team's style and swagger and the way the game was played back then any day over today's game. Would I be far off to say Johnny Cooper rarely kicks a ball in any of the games he plays in.

Gambling Advertisements - 3 Like(s)
I see where the GAA and GPA are working together to control gambling advertisements. Living in the U.S. I can attest this is a must. Gambling has and will always go on in every sport throughout the world. In the U.S. they tried to keep it out of sports as long as I can remember. One of the greatest baseball players of all time, Pete Rose has been banned from the Hall of Fame because he bet on baseball when he managed a team. However, money rules and in the last year or so all sports have welcomed gambling sites in. When you watch any game, throughout the game they offer you chances to bet on anything you could think of. Who will score first. how many points or goals will be scored in each quarter, period or half will a golfer par, birdie or bogey any particular hole. Apparently with the technology today you can bet directly from your phone or computer. All this is doing is making more money for these billion dollar teams and unfortunately drawing young people into something many won't be able to handle and making it easier for people who already have a problem to make their problem worse. I wish the GAA and GPA luck and over time hope they do not give in to lure of big money from these sites.

Hurling: Munster & Leinster Finals - 3 Like(s)

Replying To Canuck:  "I have given up on Gleeson a long time ago.He won't learn and not a team player. Also takes too many hail mary shots with players in a better position. A rare talent but a liability that Liam Cahill will not put up with. He deserves to be suspended by the report of the match officials and not t.v. Should the whole game be revised to see did the officials miss any thing else. I do believe Cork had a number of yellows and belief Waterford had none. Conor Gleeson was sacrificed for Austin in 2017 and I believe it cost us an All Ireland. No disrespect to Galway. Not excusing him in any way but trial by television is wrong. I can see using video to verify an incident that has been noted and dealt with by the officials. In effect it is the commentators have the power and keep replaying incidents. What about possible other incidents they do not pick up on. An example of that is 2017 when Conor had a hurley buried in his ribs like Austin did and he swung around with his stick across the ankles and missed an All-Ireland final. The other player missed a league game the following year. Commentators can be biased and are not the games officials. Gleeson is an idiot but I would not want any player from any county tried and suspended by t.v. If there is nothing in the referees report on an incident in a game it should not even be getting looked at. How many off the ball pulls are missed especially with no t.v. coverage and nothing happens."
Agree 100% if you are going to go to TV review the whole game and there would be a lot more put off or carded. Missed calls are part of the game you have to deal with it and move on. Noel McGrath picked up the ball on Sunday and a goal was scored. Limerick took the call and moved on that's what g00d teams do.
