Look we gave the young lads valuable experience..don't get carried away! One thing was apparant, the team is not fit enough in my opinion. Obviously you have lads coming back from injury such as jack brady and alan clarke who are not match fit (and prob should not have been started) but there are others who we need to be fitter and more involved for longer periods such as mackey and keating (who seemed to not want to run out past the 21!). Was up for the weekend with my friend from Dublin and we attended all 4 league finals. One interesting point he made was that we need to be patient, even with the u21 success. He pointed out that Michael Darragh McCauley did not make his Dublin debut until he was 25. Bernard Brogan did not make his first appearance until he was nearly 24. Paul Flynn was nearly 24 too. A lot of the younger lads are still developing and learning the trade at senior level so give them time. But between now and the Armagh game the team have a lot of hard work to put in. A lot of positives to take such as the amount of chances created, Croke park experience, game time for lads, performance of 2 or 3 lads was excellent, short kick outs were generally well worked. Gutted and frustrated after Saturday night. Was annoyed with the slow changes on the bench as well as wastefulness, as was large sections of the crowd. However, I wouldn't like to be Terry trying to pick 15 players. There is about 23 players for 10 positions on that team and if we loose then: the team wasn't picked right, players in wrong positions, switches too late. And as was said already, hindsights a great thing. cavan97 (Cavan) - Posts: 369 - 28/04/2014 12:37:09 1581321 Link 0 |
Samamaguire, you want a quik fix solution just for the sake of it -which could cause a lot of disharmony in the panel... Jack Brady started his first County game of the year against Roscommon he will get better with more club in the few weeks FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2763 - 28/04/2014 12:54:07 1581345 Link 0 |
last season was Martin Dunne's first inter-county season, alot of players we are comparing him to (Conor McManus,Donie Shine,Brogans, etc etc have been around for a lot longer. it will take another 2 or 3 seasons for this Cavan team to gain the experience that will enable them to move to the next level. (Sj is not the answer). I feel Conor Moynagh would be a good addition to the panel.I thought Martin Reilly was MOTM .(ridiculous that the MOTM always has to be on the winning team. This was a chance for Management to try a few things at head quarters . It was as much about ruling things out as in. as someone else said on here. "you learn more from defeats than you do from victory. I will stand by my assertion that the result of this game was and is not important. I think we all have learned from this experience. the game could have went either way. for a so-called defensive team, I think we had about 35 or 36 shots at goal. s goldrick (Cavan) - Posts: 5518 - 28/04/2014 13:16:31 1581377 Link 0 |

Agree with you Room22 but a genuine question for you . How much of your team relies on or is built on players pre 2011 ? Would Conor McManus have as big an impact if those players were not involved and he had entered a squad similar to where Cavan were at ? I'm a big fan of his BTW . Iv came to the conclusion some men just love to moan and all you do is whinge about whats wrong with management. Its obvious terry and his staff are doing a great job. We have won seven out of eight games in a row at senior level. This is totally new to the inconsistency iv been used to seeing over the years. To the cry babies and whingers I suggest you watch some other sport such as soccer. You'll fit right in there. Let the men get on with their good work from a true Cavan supporter... joeybartonIII (Cavan) - Posts: 26 - 28/04/2014 15:05:42 1581490 Link 0 |
yeah, good man dirtybag, sack the management... because we lost a meaningless game by a point (mackey or anyone..would have scored that last free if it hadn't been the final kick of the game.). we also missed 2 points from the penalty spot. what, so you were expecting us to beat roscommon by about 10 points, were you ?.... very silly boy. s goldrick (Cavan) - Posts: 5518 - 28/04/2014 15:40:51 1581550 Link 0 |
Dirtybag , you need to calm down a bit . I really can't see what point you're trying to make . You say we have not the manpower to get to the next level . Then you say the management can't bring us to the next level because they won't bring on the proper manpower???? Which is it? Regarding tactics , tactics did not beat us Saturday . We started well , then Roscommon reacted and put us on the back foot . We were getting over run and we made changes that steadied the ship . We competed well and when the game was in the melting pot we created the chances to win the game . Tactics were not the problem , our shooting was . The wides were not from impossible angles rushed under pressure . They were well worked moves from decent shooting positions . Leaving on our best forwards when off form may have an element of hoping for the best about it but given the options it's hardly a hanging offence . Have to say there is a lot of people getting carried away this defeat at the weekend. If we had to take those few scores when we were level all people would be talking about is how great we were and we will be competing for Ulster title. Lets face it, it is still a young team and management and they are learning all the time. The more big games that come the more experience all will get. We score 18 points which is excellent and played some lovely stuff at times. A bit more pourous than usual, but that can be fixed. Players that were playing were form players throughout the league so that why they were picked. only gripe I have is playing Brady at midfield. Not sure what that was about.Anyway, chin up. not the end of the world. Some great performances and some great options from the bench. Come on everyone, glass is half full!!! countrytool (Cavan) - Posts: 14 - 28/04/2014 16:32:45 1581594 Link 0 |
@S Goldrick Cavan didn't play defensive on Saturday they went plan B went more attacking football, you surprised everyone including Joe Brolly. 1-17 you conceded and the Rossies kicked 12 wides and missed another two goals chances its clear Cavan will be going back to plan A for the Ulster championship. So that's the end of Div 3, hopefully for a long time. It was nice to get another run out at HQ. The fact that there was nothing to lose for either side should have made it a more entertaining game. Some people think it did. I thought it was ok. Not sure why we lost our way after such an encouraging start. We should be able to take setbacks like missed penalty's and conceded goals against the run of play, a bit better at this stage of our development. And we know for sure that there is a lot of work to be done and some lads know that they need to up their game significantly, so there is certainly no room for complacency. 6 weeks to go to the Armagh match and all that that might bring with it. Don't you just love the GAA? ondforty (Cavan) - Posts: 460 - 28/04/2014 17:01:56 1581620 Link 0 |
Have to agree with Countrytool. Dont know where boys like "dirtybag" are coming from?? As somebody said we scored 18 points (Joe Brolly eat your heart out) and missed a few handy ones in the 2nd half which would have won the game. A missed penalty and a fluke Rossie goal made the difference. O.K. there was a few players off colour but I suppose this could be due to rustiness. When Roscommon put men behind the ball and ran at us we looked in trouble . But in fairness they are only 3 weeks away from championship . We have plenty of things to work on between now and Armagh . My only worry is if our inside line don't click we're in trouble . But since our options here are limited to begin with no point worrying too much . We're probably gonna have to ride this year out to a certain extent but you never know , he might spring a few surprises . Hardtimes (Cavan) - Posts: 1056 - 28/04/2014 18:41:52 1581690 Link 0 |

Great to see dirtybag back. Last heard from the week before Armagh game last year when he predicted we'd get hammered. Never showed his face since until we get beaten again. What is it with Cavan that attracts such people? When he is not slagging off a true Cavan man like Terry Hyland he promoting a certain Gaels player. The only question is how can he get his posts published. fredflint (Cavan) - Posts: 1483 - 28/04/2014 19:58:47 1581744 Link 0 |
Ridiculous comments from people about bringing back Johnston led by people trying to stir as per normal. Kildare are now a Division 2 team like us. Why would we call into our panel a player who wasn't good enough for a team at the same level as us? And it's not just Terry's decision. I'm sure a decision like that would need to be discussed with the whole panel. I for one wouldn't want a man who went out of his way to kick a point against us back in the blue jersey. We'd be the laughing stock of the country. BreffniGuide (Cavan) - Posts: 474 - 28/04/2014 20:16:13 1581756 Link 0 |
I'll be totally honest I hated seannie for scoring against his own county but there's a part of me would like to see him play with our current team to see if he is still any good and how he would fit into our current squad, in a few challenge games or something ,but I still think he made a serious mistake going to kildare, just thought there's no point filling a forward position for the fun of it either ' any way you look at it we want our best 15 starting and we have to be ruthless getting scores and stop missing frees too bisto kid (Cavan) - Posts: 492 - 28/04/2014 21:20:04 1581791 Link 0 |
