Mayo v Derry - 3 Like(s)

Replying To Llaw_Gyffes:  "Chill out my friend. It was just a tongue in cheek response to a Monaghan lad who was banging on about referees favouring Mayo. Nothing more, nothing less, no hidden agendas, no sly digs at Kerry, not even a defence of big Aidan (although come to think of it, it was a blatant foul and we should have had two penalties before that) So go and gather up those toys surrounding the pram, nothing to see here."
Mayo were robbed by Cormac Reilly in 2014 but it was still a match they had won the first day and again in the replay the game looked over early on. As for the elder O'Connor he has the knack of winning a free down to a tee. I'm more bothered by his other antics, he's always in the referee's ears and he's never far away when a scuffle breaks out; He's a great man to wind someone up and then get them booked like he did with Bradshaw.

The only reason why anyone would pick B Brogan ahead of Joyce is because he split the 90's and 00's. Joyce was a superior player to Brogan, Joyce had far more to his game than Brogan does. Joyce is easily the best player to come out of Connacht the last 30 years.

Pete McGrath is doing a great job and Fermanagh are certainly in the mix for promotion. Whoever comes out on top next Sunday will have severely dented the others hopes of going up.

Are Galway now better than Mayo? - 2 Like(s)
As usual RD has to turn up and turn into some nonsense about his own county. As for Galway they certainly haven't overtaken Mayo, all the top teams would rather play Galway than Mayo. As it stands Mayo are still an All Ireland contender and Galway are not and until that changes Galway won't have overtaken Mayo.

Most of these players who are missing were also missing when Roscommon beat Cork & Kerry in the league, unfortunately most of those players named are injury prone. Roscommon are a Div 1 side and Galway are a mid table Div 2 side, the Roscommon posters on here just trying to be cute; They fancy themselves to win but are getting their excuses in early just in case the result goes against them. Look at all the players Galway are missing hence why so many players made their championship debut against Mayo .

Replying To royaldunne:  "Totally threw the game away. 1 point up gale force wind at back, cork were in total disaray and we blew it by hitting unreal shots at posts, coming back off upright hitting shot from every angle while simple pass would have set up certain point. Blew it big time. Did you not read McEntee interviews after? Jesus he was livid."
Wow, a whole point up. Meath clearly put themselves in a position to win the game but you really can't say the game was thrown away when you were only a point up. Galway could say they threw the game away against Meath, 4 points down at HT and then went 3 points up with minutes to go and well on top to boot.

Mike Quirke's Examiner article on Dublin's funding - 2 Like(s)
The most important point raised in the article is that Dublin receive €1.46m in games development funding which I know has been raised on here previously. Its obvious that special attention needs to be given to Dublin given its population but its grossly unfair that they receive nearly 50% of the total funding for games development. The county has certainly done a good job in its use of the funds they've received but I'd rather see special attention given to the weaker counties in the country and not the strongest especially considering the other advantages the stronger counties have. Who knows what the future holds but having won 10 out of the last 11 Leinster championships and with seeing nothing to suggest they won't win the next 4 or 5 this is bound to have a knock on affect starting with attendances in the province. The attendance in the Leinster final last year was 48,000 and was 62,000 the year before. In fairness there was only 42,000 for the final in 2011 but with the absence of the serious competitor its hard to imagine 69,000 turning up for a Dublin v Meath final like they did in 20012.

All Ireland U21 Football Championship - 2 Like(s)

Replying To browncows:  "Totally over the top-ye must have been great player yourself! Very difficult to play two big games inside 5-6 days and a poor decision by powers to be. May do Kerry no harm in the longer term. Hard luck to the beaten teams and the best of luck to both teams in what is the last u21 final-it has been a great competition over the years."
My footballing abilities or lack of it have nothing to do with Donegal and their poor excuse for football. I agree they looked tired but this an excuse for been so poor in the opening half. Even with 15 minutes to go they refused to press the Dublin kick out, felt sorry for the players as they've been let down by their management.

Replying To royaldunne:  "I ain't gonna get involved in this one. Me and gotmilks ceasefire is holding, so in the words of john Cleese. Don't mention the war :). Match itself, I expect a reaction from Meath today after throwing away the game in cork and particularly McEntee comments, it won't be easy but Meath to prevail (hopefully)"
"Throwing the game away in Cork" Another one of your classic comments RD. Cork were 9 points up at one stage whilst Meath were never more than a point up. As for Meath their certainly going in the right direction although it won't be easy down in Clare as they need the points too. Who knows what Kildare will turn up in Galway although given the potential for a Meath v Kildare Leinster semi I doubt O'Neill would want to be facing Meath in a league decider.

Great teams from 1987-2010 - 1 Like(s)
The Galway team from 98-01 are a bit underrated by some, they were only a kick of the ball away from winning 3 All Ireland's in 4 years and in that Kerry game in 2000 Galway were missing Tomas Mannion & Ja Fallon and a half fit Kevin Walsh was brought on as a sub.

Replying To saddam:  "Will be interesting to see if Comer will be giving it the Big I Am down in Castlebar on Saturday, he wont get away with the guff he got away with last year."
He was a too hyped up after the sly blow he got from Boyle the year before and after a brilliant first half he had a poor second half and I hope he's learnt from that. You need not to look further than your own Lee Keegan and his antics before moaning about Galway players.

Walsh will be 24 this year, he was last u21 in 2014. Injuries have certainly hindered his developed but I'm certainly a huge fan of his. Ability wise there's few players who possess what he has, he should be Galway's answer to Diarmuid Connolly given the talent he has.

Hopefully this will be the year when he really announces himself, players mature at different ages and I'm prepared to give someone of his talent plenty of time. We only have to look at Danny Cummins for the positives of giving someone time, he's now matured into a very good corner forward.

Donegal v Galway - 1 Like(s)

Replying To Green_Gold:  "Interesting take on it, if Galway win they will face Kerry as they have already played Roscommon. Do you think that might affect them psychologically? Or do they just take it one game at a time? If Galway get their heads right then they have every chance of beating Donegal. I'd say its a 50/50/ game."
Lots of ifs and buts with Galway, we're the only team to have beaten Mayo in the last 5 championships apart from Kerry & Dublin and we've beaten them twice but the way we've been beaten by Tipp & Roscommon leaves a lot of questions about this lot. Long term Galway football is going in the right direction, won the last 3 connacht minor titles and our u21's reached the All Ireland final. We'll be waiting on some new defenders from that u21 team to take the team to the next level if not even longer and it might not happen at all, we've too many average defenders and everyone knows that. I do think there will be enough quality coming through over the next 2 or 3 years so its not all doom and gloom.

Galway vs Kildare - 1 Like(s)

Replying To Pope_Benedict:  "Last year was a fluke result in Castlebar. In truth, Mayo weren't at the races on the night. This was proven later last season, when Mayo comfortably handled Tipp, after we'd been destroyed by Tipp, and went on to contest two all-ireland finals. Mayo will come to Salthill on June 11th hellbent on revenge, and I for one will be pleasantly surprised if they don't succeed on the day."
Fluke is a bit too strong there Pope. Galway needed Mayo to underperform and they did and Mayo kept underperforming all the way to the All Ireland Final. You could easily say Tipp's comprehensive victory over Galway was a fluke because if Galway played Tipp 10 times Galway would more games than Tipp. Given the age and the amount of mental torture that Mayo team has suffered they won't be at full throttle come June, they will aiming to be peaking come late August/September so we will have a chance of beating them. I agree they will have extra motivation this year and they'll certainly be up for it but I don't think think we'll see the Mayo team we're used to seeing later on in the summer. Mayo will be strong favourites and rightly so but its wrong to suggest Galway have no chance of beating them.

Can Mayo exorcise the ghost of '13? - 1 Like(s)
I see a few on here and on social media that are getting so animated by people who are writing Mayo off. You can hardly blame people, Mayo have been way of where they were in previous years. They failed to beat Galway and followed that up with indifferent performances against Fermanagh, Kildare & Westmeath. They did play better against Tyrone but if Tyrone had scored their goal chance the game would have been beaten and Tyrone created enough chances to win anyway but poor finishing cost them. I wouldn't call their win against Tipp on Sunday comfortable either, If Tipp had scored a goal during their period of dominance in the 2nd half Mayo would have been in big trouble. Mayo look to be in a downward spiral but we'll know for certain either way come the 18th.

I got hammered on here the other day for suggesting Donegal's football was terrible to watch!!! Whats the club football like in Donegal? Is it played with a similar style? I wouldn't know if these lads are even capable of kicking a ball based on what I saw today. There was so many times in that first half where a Donegal player was so hesitant when it came to shooting and would end up turning back. As for Galway it was a mighty win and the 4 points difference didn't do the performance justice. Rob Finnerty had a day to forget but he wasn't the only one who was wasteful so they've got plenty to be working on for the final. Galway were the far hungrier team but had the talent to capitalise on this.

Galway vs Kildare League Final - 1 Like(s)
You've got to give everyone involved some credit, they've bounced back well after the defeat to Meath. Promotion to Div 1 was very important and we've got there eventually. I'd expect a different performance next week, there will be less pressure involved and I'd expect a game with far greater intensity. Galway were extremely tentative yesterday.

Football Championship 2017 - 1 Like(s)
Football will always continue to surprise us. Look at the this season, can't think of too many who'd have predicted that Tipp would make the final 4 and likewise Galway would beat Mayo. I can't recall too many people who'd have predicted that Mayo would make a final after their defeat to Galway. I'd expect Monaghan to have a far better campaign, there wasn't a great deal between them and Donegal and they should have a couple of those u21's making the step up. Looking at the so called top 5 of Dublin, Kerry, Mayo, Tyrone & Donegal I see Donegal as the team who don't have a chance of challenging for the big prize. Kerry will win Munster as I just can't see Tipp beating them whilst Cork have the personnel to beat them but just look far to unorganised. I think Meath will improve but many of the Meath posters are expecting too much too soon, I don't see them getting promoted this year but I don't see them getting relegated either. They could be capable of making a quater final as long as they benefit from a good draw. As for Connacht, Galway, Mayo & Roscommon will all be looking to win Connacht although Mayo will be strong favourites once again. Galway's aim has be winning a game in Croke Park given its 2001 since we last won a game in HQ whilst Roscommon haven't beaten the big 2 in Connacht since 2001. As a Galwayman I'd settle for promotion to Div 1 this year and winning a game in Croker in the championship and then we can take it from there.
