Wexford earned their first Leinster senior hurling championship win over Galway in eight attempts with a resounding victory (1-28 to 0-23) at Chadwicks Wexford Park this afternoon.

Winless in this year’s Bob O’Keeffe Cup race coming into this one after a draw with Dublin and defeat to Antrim, Keith Rossiter’s men surged 0-9 to 0-5 in front after the opening 20 minutes and would go on to hold a two-point lead at the half.

Rory O’Connor’s goal from outside the 21-metre line marked the perfect restart for the Slaneysiders and, from there, Mark Fanning, Cian Byrne and O’Connor would add points that had the difference at seven come the 48th minute.

Galway got points back via Evan Niland, Tom Monaghan and Padraic Mannion but couldn’t close the gap, as the hosts saw out their vital win via scores from O’Connor and skipper Lee Chin.
