Awful set of predictions my Leitrim friend. On the plus side a good win for ye against Louth well done. As for ourselves onto 7 points with the opportunity to gain promotion now. If we are promoted it will be achievement in itself when one considers all injuries and players opting out we had this year.

Andy Moran retires - 6 Like(s)

Replying To yew_tree:  "Yawn, Andy was born in castlebar hospital....Dermot early was a Mayo man"
Very few Roscommon people are born here unless home births as we don't have a maternity ward. For the record Andy like the late Dermot Earley was reared up in,educated in and kicked his first football in Roscommon. All the best to Andy Moran in his retirement, I'd say he'll get into management and it will be interesting to see how he does there. One thing for certain he made his late dad (a rossie supporter to the core) very proud regardless that he played for Mayo.

Roscommon Vs Monaghan - 5 Like(s)

Replying To FarneyLenny:  "Combined hammerings of around 4-37 in super 8's. Hardly returning stars!!"
For those like yourself that don't know, outside of the retirements against Monaghan on Sunday we were missing three of our best and most established defenders in Niall McInerney,John McManus,Sean Mullooly; top scoring forwards the Murtagh brothers and Donie Smith, arguably the best midfielder we had the last two years in Cathal Compton, one of our best leaders in Fintan Cregg and one of our best young talents is Brian Stack. Thats a lot for a new manager to deal with when you consider we would be favourites for the drop with a full hand but if we weren't so wasteful 1st half v Mayo we could easily be on 4 points now.

Replying To katser:  "St.Thomas' have a great unity, closeness and understanding with eachother, they are like a family Club Team with 6 Burkes and 3 Cooneys on the starting 15 plus Borris-lleigh don't play the sweeper system unlike Ballygunner, so the old fashioned 15 on 15 open hurling is what St.Thomas' like. Corofin have a knack of grinding out ugly wins against Defensively Teams but should they get to Croke Park on All Ireland Final Day, they will just excell and turn it on in style in the open space of Croke Park"
Tuam, Pearses and Ballintubber were all well organised defensively which forced Corofin to grind out victories. Corofin will hammer any team that set themselves poorly in defence, for example Clann na ngael last year.

So the trial by social media results in a one match ban for Donie Smith. Same punishment as Philly McMahon got so no surprises there. Looks like Keith Higgins if going to avoid any ban for his attempted head butt, a lucky boy if so.

Just 5 weeks away. A new knock out format for next year. We have been drawn against Sligo at home. In the meantime we should be playing a few challenges so this thread can be used for any news on those upcoming games.

We are apparently starting with that team. Football put into perspective with the untimely death of Morgan Keena, a very sad time especially for his club Clann na nGael. Condolences to his family and friends RIP.

Replying To rossno1:  "I am going to put my prediction on the table, I just can't see Roscommon Gaels not being crowned county champions this year. Gaels are an impressive unit and they have impact players off the bench. Pearses are going to be defensive and they are good at it but the Gaels forwards are formidable on their day and their cleverness will yield enough scores to win the game. Gaels are also explosive on the counter attack much more so than Pearses. Pearses have probably as good a defense if not better than Gaels but it's up front where I believe Gaels have all the class. Grant it Pearses have players like Darcy at the scoring end who can be explosive on his day but some of their other forwards like Payne and Carey are so inconsistent especially when up against good players. Gaels forwards like Connolly, Oates, Gilhooly etc are just naturally talented footballers so for this reason I believe Gaels will win by 5-6 points. The minor game is a strange game in that Brigids have all the class but with a few key players out they may struggle at times to get the better of a dogged Clann team that is lacking quality at both ends of the pitch. I still think Brigid's will have enough to make it 4 minor titles in a row. Its been a poor minor grade this year but I hope it comes close to the minor final from two years ago which was the best minor final I have seen in the last 20 years and I have seen the majority of them. So a Brigids and Gaels double for me this weekend - off to the bookies now."
Bookies stopped taking bets on minors games a few years ago. While i also think Roscommon Gaels will win i'll be surprised if they were to win by 5-6 points as very little separates these two well matched sides and that was the case in last years quarter final. Roscommon Gaels have conceded less than Pearses this year, Pearses in their last two games conceded 1-14 and 2-12 if they concede a similar total on Sunday you might be right about that margin of victory. Both are scoring well. Roscommon Gaels 7-66 (87) scored v Pearses 11-54 (87) Payne (Pearses) Oates (Gaels) are similar type of footballers. Not big scoring forwards but every so often they will either create or score an important point or goal. Both a true team players also and get through a mountain of work. Gillooly (Gaels) and Carey (Pearses) are two naturally talented footballers but both are still teens and and that age its only normal that they are both inconsistent . So far Carey has outscored Gillooly in this championship 2-17 (23) to 4-9 (21). I hope the poor weather forecast that is due doesn't ruin both finals.

Ros v Clare - 4 Like(s)
The old chestnuts of the Connacht final 2011 and the minor semi final v Tyrone 2013 brought up on here again. First of all we lost the Connacht final in 2011 because our lead should have been more at half time with the gale wind and secondly when the game was in the balance 2nd half Mayo won some of the softest frees you will ever likely to see from Collins the Cork ref who has thankfully retired since. The Tyrone minor semi final was lost due to our own wastefulness in the 1st half and the same happened in 2012 v Kerry in the minor quarter final. The one thing to point out is all those games we were highly competitive unlike the Clare game in Salthill and replay v Galway. I don't often agree with Mr Pundits views on here but i think he is spot on with his last post. Well drilled, organised, high work rate and good defensively have been trademarks of O Donnell teams and if we are to improve next year then all of those traits must be instilled into the team. I'd be concerned if the players weren't upset after getting knocked out of the championship by Clare and received a trimming off Galway in the Connacht final two teams that turned out to be average at best. That player anger should be directed into next years performances to do much better and then we should see a very determined team in 2017 with improved championship results. It might disappoint a few on here but as far as i know and heard the joint management will be place for next season again as planned. My own view is if John Evans was given a 2nd year when we failed to get out of div 3 and won no championship game in his first year with us then i see no reason why O Donnell and McStay who kept us up in Div 1 shouldn't be given a 2nd year. Changes in the back room team will probably have to be done with better coaches brought in to improve us defensively and in strength and conditioning must be improved on also. Balancing out the league and championship and cutting down on injuries has to be targets for the joint management next year.

Mayo's double standard's - 4 Like(s)

Replying To riverboys:  "Ye can thank 2 Mayo men for yer Connacht title because the Roscommon mob couldn't organise a p### up in a brewery, now pull yer heads in, some eejets boo at Connolly, Murphy because they are class players and deserve to win All Ireland's and are hoping to put them off their game but class players don't even hear the jeers, what's yer excuse? Because the club Moran plays for is in the Mayo championship instead of Roscommon, boo hoo, how many rossies supported this team before the won Connacht, there wasn't too many in Salthill, when a county can bring 8000-13000 fans to League or championship matches then they can say something about other county supporters, until that happens the rossies have nothing to preach about"
The vast majority of our current senior panels won 3 of the last 6 U21 Connacht titles and should have won the 2013,2016 Connacht U21 finals so one of the main reasons McStay took over was because of the talent there another was we were promoted to Div one under the last management. Are you one of those Mayo supporters that just followed his team in 2012? in 2011 Roscommon who played their league football in Div 4 greatly outnumbered Mayo in support and the quarter final Cork v Mayo had a little over 20k at it? Mayo have the best bandwagon supporters around i give you that and a more recent example would be U21 Connacht final in Sligo last year when Mayo brought about 500 to the game but once Mayo reached the AI final thousands traveled to Ennis. Finally i don't want to hear any booing at GAA games no place for it IMO but the excuse was Roscommon man kissing a Mayo crest in a FBD game something no former Ballagh player would do as they would have a bit more sense than Andy Moran.

Ultan Harney is without doubt county standard but the problem for him is getting over his injuries and having extended run in the team in his correct position. To some Donie Shine isn't an option for the county team anymore and those with that view are entitled to that however when some of the forward options we bring on aren't a patch on Donie Shine you really need to ask why he isn't on the panel at the very least. By the way he did finish top scorer in our club championship GAA lover just ahead of Ciaran Murtagh.

Yet another painful Croke Park championship experience for us Rossies. To be honest i feared the worse traveling up and felt no better when i took my spot in the middle of the Hogan stand for throw in, by 15 minutes into the game it was clear we would ship another heavy defeat. Tyrone had knocked our momentum last week, that was our must win game and the players and management knew it. One week was never enough time to recover from that defeat and especially against a runaway train like Dublin. Tonight highlighted that we still have a lot of work to do on our tackling, strength and conditioning. T he latter is much needed as few months was never going to fix those major issues we have. Its not by chance they we had little left tank for Connacht final replay 2016,Replay v Mayo 2017 or last year v Tyrone in round 1 of the group stage. Each time we came off the back of hard games and the best teams also happen to be the most conditioned and will ruthlessly expose what mistakes you makes which was a mountain of mistakes from us tonight. Long story short we didn't make ourselves hard to beat or score against matter of fact we must have gifted about 2-8 alone to Dublin tonight and you can't expect to be competitive against sides of Dublin's quality when that happens.

Replying To moros:  "I'd have to agree with Michael on this and the majority of fans at the game were saying the same afterwards."
I wouldn't agree with him as out defence and all round defending was at its porous once again last Sunday. The main problem however was all over the field with a very flat team performance that lacked the intensity and energy of the opening rounds and as Anthony Cunningham has said since a lot of our basic mistakes came down to that and it simply wasn't good enough for Div one football.

Sadly the Tyrone monkey remains stuck to our back but at least we gave a far better account of ourselves than July 2018 v Tyrone To win against the odds (remember we were 4/1 for this game) we needed awful lot to go right on the day for us. The four week break turned out to be more of hindrance than a help as we lacked the required match sharpness As i don't think a sharper team would have made as many simple mistakes, missed as many scoreable frees, and would have taken at least one of the three goal chances that came our way. Defensively apart from one mad cap moment where we almost gifted an awful goal to Tyrone in the 2nd half i thought we did well and first half especially we had good patient play in the chances we created and scored TBH i thought we deserved to be level at least at half time. Was no real midfield battle today as both choose to kick short or to the wings and used a running game. 2nd half we managed to make it a 1 score game 0-11 to 0-10 but then came our lull period (we had those v Galway,Mayo also) and where Tyrone won that game. Hard luck out players and management, i can't but be proud of the effort put in but in the end we were simply beaten by a 4 point margin by a side that are more experienced, conditioned and more sweet wise than us.

Replying To SmokieRoss:  "New management team but two selectors who failed miserably with our two best ever u21 teams losing convincingly to Tyrone in All Ireland semi in Sligo and following year losing Connacht final to Mayo. Club records decent but more so at intermediate level. Would have concerns over S&C following this media story from last year. However they ALL have to be given a chance. One good thing is the county gym should be back up and running by end of this week". Newspaper Article 'I felt everybody got made a laughing stock of - management, backroom and the players' Strength and conditioning coach Noel Flynn has spoken out following Peter Creedon's departure as Laois senior football manager. A KEY MEMBER of Peter Creedon's former backroom team in Laois believes that his reputation has been "tarnished" by allegations of a drink culture in the O'Moore County. Strength and conditioning coach Noel Flynn, a former Dublin underage player who's also worked with the Tipperary senior footballers, has spoken out following Creedon's departure from the Laois job. Flynn, from the Lucan Sarsfields club in Dublin, is a highly-regarded figure who played in a star-studded NUI Maynooth Sigerson Cup team during his time there. Flynn lined out with current Dublin star Bernard Brogan, Donegal All-Ireland winner Rory Kavanagh, Kerry's Marc Ó Sé, Kildare's Mick Foley and veteran Mayo ace Alan Dillon, among others, at third-level. A graduate of the Setanta College strength and conditioning programme, Flynn got his inter-county break with Creedon, during his final year in charge of Tipperary in 2015. He had hoped to remain with the Premier County for another year - and was working on that premise - but Creedon's successor Liam Kearns opted to bring on board Dave Moriarty""
Well you don't sound like a man that is giving them a chance. For the record losing AI semi final in 2015 to Tyrone narrowly who then went on to win that AI is not failing miserably and Daly was not part of management team in 2016. The 2016 Connacht final was a contest where all the luck was with Mayo who sure enough then went on to win that AI so no failing miserably there either SmokieRoss At club level Daly won a Connacht intermediate title and led Glaveys to AI final. He left them in the senior grade and when he took them over they were playing junior football. Dowd won a Mayo county title for Ballagha without Andy Moran who was out injured with ACL and they haven't got close to those heights since he left and he was selector on the Connacht 2010 winning team and minor 2016 AI winning team. Yes decent alright!

Replying To carlovia:  "The 200 allowed is phase 3 of the government plan and 500 is phase 4. As the cases have recently increased the move to phase 4 has been delayed."
When the decision was made to delay phase 4 the weekly case numbers was 22 per day average and with the panic over a rise in the reproduction number it was feared daily cases would get close to or above 100 a day. As it stands we are at 17 cases per day average, that panic was unfounded and phase 4 should have gone ahead as planned last Monday and allowing 500 at least to attend games this weekend

Arguably the best and most naturally talented forward in Connacht a big miss for the team if he got the misfortune of injury again but if my memory serves me right in 2016 he played none of our 7 group games in Div 1 and yet we finished top scorers in the league that year. Donie Smith should be starter however at the moment is seen as impact sub and every team that has plans to make progress need subs that can a make impact on a contest like Donie did yesterday.

Inter County Championship 2020 - 4 Like(s)

Replying To SmokieRoss:  "One thing I think we all agree is that freshness was needed to the backroom team and no matter what team it is after two years you need to bring in new voices etc. Good reports about Gary Flannery and the players have been impressed with him to date ableit with only one fitness test pre lockdown and zoom sessions. Stephen Poacher is a very surprising move given he was manager of Down minors last month who lost to Fermanagh in Ulster quarter final scoring only 1-4 at that age level. I would have serious concerns about the appointment but to be fair he has to be given the opportunity now that he is appointed. Has got a lot of bad publicity for his sideline antics and his method of play in recent seasons. Surprising that if he was in that big of demand he was only with Carlow seniors and Down minors in recent years no disrespect to either. It's a wonder he isn't involved with his own senior set up. The optics of the timing of the announcement is also strange given that Gary Flannery is in place nearly a month now but announcing two appointments two weeks after our fundraising draw is drawing some choice comments of how the money is being spent particularly when you bring Poacher all the way from Down. He may only have been appointed in recent days which goes back to my earlier point if he is so highly rated and I haven't heard too many saying that then how was he still available this late in the year. Anyhow I wish both of them best of luck and it may be a while before we see a ball kicked given the number of tragic deaths in recent days."
None of the fundraising money for the home in London goes towards senior management expenses so you or anyone else speculating in that manner can stop. James McCartan was the Down minor manager, Poacher the coach. It was a 3 point loss against a defensive Fermanagh outfit. Sligo back in March played Fermanagh in the Ulster league in a simliar low scoring match with Sligo winning narrowly. Poacher is a type of appointment that our neighbours Galway, Mayo would normally make and Monaghan recently brought in Donie Buckley. Good to see our county board have the ambition and trust in Cunningham judgement. Flannery came on board at the end of December brought in as basically new head of S&C but announcement made as he now has a slightly different role as performance GDA. Freshness in the backroom team was certainly needed the biggest error McStay made was not to do likewise in 2018 and instead placed too much of his trust in both Liam McHale, Ger Dowd and the rookie S&C chap from Mayo.
