Kildare opened the defence of their Leinster and All-Ireland U20FC titles with a 1-15 to 0-11 win over Longford in Hawkfield.

On a busy night of Leinster U20FC first round action, the Lilywhites - who could call on seven of last year's team - led by 0-8 to 0-6 at half-time before Ross Harris outjumped Longford goalkeeper Oisín McManus to fist home the only goal midway through the second half.

Dublin signalled their intent with a facile 1-15 to 0-6 victory over Westmeath in Kinnegad. The visitors raced into a 0-5 to 0-0 lead and were out of sight by half-time when Karl Flynn's goal extended their lead to 1-9 to 0-2.

In a game switched from Stabannon to Darver, Louth defeated Offaly by 1-11 to 2-6. The Wee County laid the foundations for their win in the opening half when they went into the break level (1-2 apiece) after playing against a gale-force wind. 

Kieran Melia netted for the hosts before they grabbed the first five points of the second half to take control. But Offaly made it uncomfortable for them after Cillian Bourke raised their second green flag, with Sean Afolabi Joseph having done likewise in the opening half.

Corner forward Jamie O'Brien was the star of the show as Laois overcame Carlow by 3-8 to 0-10, while James Boland and Eanna Nolan scored late points to give Wicklow a 0-12 to 1-7 victory over Wexford.
