The GAA seems to be littered with ridiculous playing rules or administrative rules. Two off the top of my head: PK57 (Louth) - Posts: 1656 - 18/07/2019 07:10:40 2212620 Link 0 |
1 Yellow cards not being accumulated for suspensions. MuckrossHead (Donegal) - Posts: 5028 - 18/07/2019 09:33:06 2212643 Link 0 |
A cynical, professional foul on an attacking player bearing down on goal is punished by a 13m free to the attacker and a forced substitution for the penalised player rather than awarding the fouled player a penalty or a free shot on goal from an equally advantageous position. I've always thought the rule regarding puckouts in Hurling is ridiculous as I can only ever remember being enforced once at the end of a tight game, I think it was Donal Og Cusack that got pulled for going outside the small square. Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 1915 - 18/07/2019 13:54:27 2212760 Link 0 |
Suspensions based on weeks is fine Happens in few other sports as well. Works with little issue in rugby If like in your example a player gets 8 week ban and doesn't play for 9 weeks they should be banned from that game. There should be minimum number of games included in any ban to ensure player is punished some how KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3513 - 18/07/2019 14:05:06 2212765 Link 0 |

The qualifiers. Teams can meet again in rounds 2 and 3. But not in round 4. Bizarre Malonemagic (Laois) - Posts: 767 - 18/07/2019 14:39:43 2212781 Link 1 |
This was pulled up at the end of a Munster under 21 hurling final between Clare and Tipp in Ennis, around 2008 The game was in injury time, draw game and Clare were awarded a close range free in what looked like the last puck of the game. They hadnt won an under 21 Munster title for years! The umpire down the far end decided it was an appropriate time to alert the referee that the Clare goal keeper had stepped outside the small square in the previous puck out! The Ref picked up the ball, put is down on the 65 yard line and awarded Tipp a free. Tipp scored, the ref blow the final whistle shortly after and all hell broke out in Ennis. The umpire was a Limerick lad. Just thought I'd mention that for the craic! Ban (Westmeath) - Posts: 1415 - 18/07/2019 15:03:43 2212789 Link 1 |
Far from fine, player A could miss 4/5 games or even more and for the exact same infringement player B misses 1 game, makes no sense at all!

Ectra time rules seems to have been made up as they went along

yes i can remember that one i watched it on Tg4 , I cant seem to remember a free for that rule since and most goal keepers do go out side the small square. Very strange one.

When an attacker gets surrounded by 3/4 defenders who are literally making no effort to tackle, only holding the attackers arms or any other way of preventing him from playing the ball, the attacker is always punished for over carrying. It happens in every game, it is not tackling! Douglas_44 (Roscommon) - Posts: 225 - 18/07/2019 15:28:48 2212797 Link 2 |
It's fine to use a time based duration for a penalty but the time frame should include a minimum number of games Game based sanctions only works with a very regulated season of games like you get with soccer season like pro soccer teams play 40 plus competitive games a season in all competitions. Dragging a man down by his arm is a black card. Dragging a man down by his jersey is a yellow card. SurelyToGod (Donegal) - Posts: 385 - 18/07/2019 15:35:34 2212804 Link 1 |
To make it worse Clare had never won the Munster U 21 Title before. They won four out the next six however and capped each one with All Ireland. Ourselves and Clare have contested ten All Ireland Finals at U21 level between us and won every one of them. Sadly other Shannonside teams I could mention do not have such an impeccable record,( I just thought I'd throw the last bit for the 'auld' crack-like) Oldtourman (Limerick) - Posts: 4342 - 18/07/2019 15:38:30 2212808 Link 0 |
So you agree that the rule doesn't make any sense at the minute then!

Not true. Thats nonsense. Pulling the jersey is a noting infraction. Pulling a man down in a cynical manner is always a black. No matter how he pulls him down. Again the above is another reason refs get abuse. People dont know the rules. They want a man black carded for having his jersey pulled or tugged. daytona11 (Kildare) - Posts: 4012 - 18/07/2019 15:55:59 2212815 Link 2 |
Yellows do not carry over, ticks do however

The pick up. So many players get away with picking a rolling ball they might aswell get rid of it. It doesn't serve any purpose and is not a skill. The_Biler (Westmeath) - Posts: 84 - 18/07/2019 16:47:15 2212832 Link 1 |
