Tyrone ladies pay £13,650 to use Garvaghey in 2017

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

The Tyrone senior ladies team were charged £13,650 for use of the facilities at the county's Centre of Excellence in Garvaghey in 2017. On the Tyrone GAA website it says Garvaghey is 'a Tyrone gaelic resource, facilitating all the gaelic codes and cultural/heritage activities; for men and women, boys and girls'. Tyrone's men's teams are given free use of the facilities at centre and the ladies should be too. Disgrace.

The LGFA is a different organisation to the GAA but you're right it's a disgrace that they are being charged to use a Centre of Excellence belonging to their own county.

Not surprised at all by this, considering if they went to a council owned sports arena with 5 grass pitches, 1 full size gaelic spec 4g pitch with gaa match grade lighting a full size 3g indoor arena cryo bath, full gym and adequate changing facilities the tyrone county management should be ashamed of themselves boasting about the facilities at garvaghey being for ALL the gaa family except it isn't. You have a few people involved on top of the windiest place in tyrone { sse wind turbine survey } who would have nobody accept the tyrone mens football teams using it. Even the tyrone hurlers are 2nd class citizens in a facility touted as tyrone gaa's family facility. The clubs of tyrone are asked to donate £1000 per year for the upkeep of garvaghey and then charged £75 to use it each time if it is even available. A recent tournament held on the pitches was curtailed to points only because the goal mouths were out of use????. Now the county committee have been told that the maintenance costs will escalate by £100k next year and the powers that be now want to build a £2,5million indoor arena on top of the ongoing costs which as was predicted by some very wise men before it was ever built foretold that the maintenance will cripple the county board. On a side point I see that the coup has begun and all the wee soldiers are lined up behind the former pro damian Harvey to oust Roisin Jordan who didn't cowtow to the demands of the county senior team. Now things are looking a lot clearer as to the 3yr contract handed to mh at the end of the summer having not succeeded in his request for a 1yr extension. Looks like the hard work has been done in the background to get the top of the county clubs backing a 3yr contract and now backing Harvey to take over. Seems that club tyrone trip wasn't all a waste of time and a lot of the coup plans could be discussed on along haul to oz. Will be an interesting meeting tomorrow night but looks like mh has got his favoured players lined up and its fixtures for the next 3yrs so looking likely the club players will be held to ransom to the demands of the tyrone senior football team. Shame that a big company like Mc Aleer and Rushe were allowed to walk away but it remains to be seen if a small tyrone company can keep up the financial commitment for 3yrs if things take a nose dive following the brexit process, anyhow lets sit back and see if things work out as planned by those in the background

That's why they've gone to cookstowns MUSA a council run facility with more amenities than garvaghey and cheaper in the long run

A pity there isn't a woman chairperson of the County Board.

It wasn't so long ago that Louth county board tried to charge the louth ladies nearly €11 grand for the facilities in the Darver centre of excellence. Until a compromise was reached.

Hopefully a compromise can be reached in this situation. It's terrible and has to change. Bring everyone together under one umbrella.

Bring everyone together under one umbrella.

Who is stopping this though or where is the resistance? Is it from the GAA side of the house or the LGFA? If it is the GAA who are digging their heals of bringing the LGFA under the same umbrella then yes they need to remove whatever is blocking it and get the LGFA onboard. But if it is the LGFA who are stopping it then the ire of people should be directed towards that Organisation. People have to remember there is upkeep to such facilities and if an Organisation is using them but isn't contributing directly or indirectly to the GAA Organisation (who own and run the facilities) then it is reasonable for there to be a charge. As the old saying goes, you can't have your cake and eat it!

Let's keep this on topic. Partly my fault. We can continue this topic over on the Tyrone page where numerous treads are open but its a graveyard from contributors.

Il be honest I don't know enough about the situation. I have heard previous presidents talking about aliening LGFA and Camogie with the rest of the GAA or whatever but hasn't happened for what every reason. It seems a win-win situation to amalgamate the whole thing but there could be reasons why its not. I would like to know so it anyone knows it would be great to hear why.

True in most of what you say but the words on the Tyrone website do not match the reality in this regard, might be cheaper to remove the words. The LGFA are of course opposed to any meger it will happen with camogie long before the LGFA do merge. BTW it is not just Tyrone that seem to be short changign the ladies. The AIG Dublin sponsorship deal is worth a massive €45k a year to the Dublin LGFA! You can bet the mens games want for little for that deal.

This reflects poorly on Tyrone GAA. What is the point in having great facilities if they are not available to everyone. It gives out a terrible message. I hope Joe Brolly does not get to hear about this.

How much did the LGFA or Tyrone Ladies contribute towards the construction or running costs of Garvaghy?

Good question. ALso why do they have a lgfa member on the ccc for fixture planning? either tyrone gaa are fully integrated or they aren't, though on saying that ask the county hurling teams if they are treated the same as the footballers in the use of garvaghey, so don't believe all the hype that some would try to portray that everyone in tyrone gaa is equal or that garvaghey is a facility for the use of the whole gaa family.

it was mentioned that because they aren't integrated with the gaa per se, they are charged and vat added? not sure on this though maybe more learned contributors would be up to speed on such matters regarding tax, seems a flimsy excuse if right to justify the extortionate charges

they aren't that great, sitting on top of a hill surrounded by windmills { wind turbine survey showed it was one of the best places to site wind farms in Ireland due to the continuous wind and speeds } and it certainly isn't always available to others including the county hurling teams, when the footballers request the use of a couple of pitches, yes fine words and glossy brochures are nice to sell memberships but the reality for those on the playing front doesn't reflect those words and pictures
