Big Joe the Goalkeeper

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I am not really that excited Joe is back to be honest. But I am really excited that Andy Mc is the new coach I expect Andy to shaking things up big time. Listened to a podcast someone shared with Tommy Dowd and Evan Kelly. And and some one said Brendan Reilly changed from been a corner back to the full forward line in 96. There is plenty of other examples of creative thinking that worked for Boylan. GG from wing back to Full forward etc.
Andy Mc is the right man for the job there is no one that even comes close to him at the moment in my opinion. So even if Meath dont win a game next year he is still the right man. All you can do I pick the right candidate for the job. And that's what was done here. Bring on 2017 I say. Hopefully in a few years everyone will be back saying how dirty Meath are etc. And it will just be like old times :)

To be fair to Joe he was a good servant of Meath Football, always willing to fight on and I think the fact he is now an option for goalie is another example of this. Andy is looking at 50+ players according to accounts and everything I am hearing from those close to the camp is positive. Andy is a hard task master and demands 100% commitment from everyone involved. One thing for sure is Joe will give this, Joe may not be the number 1 come championship, he may not even be involved in the panel at that stage, but having his experience and desire to win I am sure would be a good thing to have in the dressing room. Come August if Meath are still in the championship and Joe is between the posts then everyone will be on here call it a masterstroke.
After 2 - 3 league games we will have a better indication of the likely direction this Meath team are heading, hopefully it will be all positive and in an upward direction. Meath need to start winning and being successful, if this means a step or two backwards or side-wards then that is what needs to happen. So supports please support and naysayers please hold your fire until after a few serious competitive games.

bobkarlgees: The Brendan Reilly conversion from a county defender to a forward is something that I would not call creative thinking. In the first place he was a forward and played all his club football there. He should never have been played as a defender (he got a bit of roasting in the AI lost). I would also say that Boylan was a great manager and easily in the top 4 or 5 in the country over the last 30 years.

Well I think you know the point I was trying to get across. Cormac Sullivan played out field for the Pats and in goal for Meath. Also didn't Brendan Reilly do well to play as a defender rahter than a foward ? I seem to remember he did ok there. And It was actually Evan Kelly that was saying it was a master stroke by Boylan and risk move that worked out for Sean not me.

bobkarlgees - my point maybe not well enough made was that even the best of managers can get is wrong at times trying things out and I know that good half forwards can make good half backs if their work rate is good enough as a half forward. Some midfielders can make good full backs and some can only play in a single position. The biggest problem 'big joe' would have in goals is getting down on a low ball - early days yet

I am scratching my head at this one...

How does this work on any level? Don't we have better shot stoppers, better goal kickers, better free takers and more experienced players in the county?

He did fold his arms alot, and was the greatest man for lame excuses I have ever heard, honestly dog ate my homework stuff. Cringworthy and embarrassing at times.
But no matter what he will always hold one record, as been the man behind our lost 130 year record of never been beating by Westmeath.
Now its Christmas time and I am very positive about the future with not only great manager bit a capable one.

I dont care if Andy brought mcquillan out of retirement and stuck him in goals, as andy been a actual ic manager of the highest quality he would know best. And has my unwavering loyalty and support for 3 years, but I hope its 10"
What would happen if he dropped Biggy from the panel?

I suppose every option is being looked at but I wouldn't be a huge fan of the notion, but time will tell.
The absolute cynic in me, upon hearing of the news first, drew a link to our new sponsor and the return of two Sheridans to the panel. But as I said, that was the cynic in me. The optimist in me is hoping theres a new rich vein of form behind it which will culminate in Medals and all stars....

Good insight into McEntee from fellow Ashbourne lad Rory O'Connor here. In general a good listen Rory is an inspiration.

Yes of course, under Andy it is a different situation than previous manager as Andy to put it diplomatically is a inter county manager,
It wont happen, but graham is in his late 20s and cant keep going forever. That been said I can't wait to see how Andy will use him this year.

I think you are on the money there lad re the link to the Sheridan's being called up.

I actually like the two Sheridan lads as players and personalities but seeing Joe tweeting yesterday asking about what are the best goalkeeping gloves, I think its a kick in the teeth to many of the underrated goalkeepers in the county who haven't ever been given a run on the county panel - I'm thinking the likes of Geraghty at Na Fianna and Dalton at Blackhall.

Is the case with Geraghty that he doesn't want ti commit to the panel? At least that's what I heard.

Regarding Joe's tweet it must have been done tongue in cheek but yo do have a point regarding other good goalies that may not have been considered.

But, at this stage, Andy has a job to do and if he sees Joe as providing something the others dont be it kick outs or big game experience then that's 100% his call.
