If they are average footballers the footballers of Gael Colmcille and Summerhill must be very poor footballers so.

Replying To Meathmaverick:  "Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but i cant understand when lads come on here and find fault with someones selections but fail to provide their own alternative.

Firstly Yes costello is young and inexperienced but has show well so far this year. No harm having a bit of youthfull exuberance when morale is low. He played with his head up on Sunday and tried to make things happen.

Secondly if you read my post i said to try and keep 4 lads up as much as possible as forwards. Defending when we dont have it but getting into the forward zone and keeping defenders honest when we have the ball.
You have to name a team with numbers on their backs but in todays game numbers dont really count for much, McHugh played 11 for Donegal on Sunday but was all over the pairc. So just because im naming someone at 11 doesnt mean i expect them to be a Trevor Giles sort of constant on the 40, i'd expect the 4 lads to rotate all game.

Thirdly i do understand Costello is young and inexperienced but we're in desperate enough times.
E.Wallace was poor on Sunday and i think in todays game and especially against top teams you need to have an impact from the bench, so all going well on Sunday we are in the game with 15 to go and have pace from E.Wallace, B.McMahon(who i rate very highly) and J.Conlon to come in and make a positive change when the game is stretched."
Brian McMahon has been consistently our best forward over the past year and a half! And that playing at 11 when he is more comfortable in the full forward line! Despite all the tracking back he does he still manages to regularly get on the score board! I for one wouldn't be starting a game without him! As a matter of interest - what is our best 15 if we had everyone available?

Colgan - (In the absence of a real alternative!)
Gallagher
McGill
Lavin
J McEntee
Harnan
Keoghan
Menton
Jones
Cian O'Sullivan
Brian McMahon
Ethan Devine
Joe Wallace
Michael Newman
Thomas O'Reilly

I know people will disagree with this and as everyone on here says - it is just my opinion! At a guess, I think there will be less argument about the back line - possibly calls for the Ryans or McCoy

Midfield - we seem to lacking a dominant midfielder around the county at the moment. Again arguments could be made for Shane McEntee, or a fully fit Harry Rooney - Young McGowan from Ratoath could maybe step up but not this year!

Up front there will be loads of opinions - I have watched Ethan Devine over the past couple of years and I think he is a different type of player to what Andy has been trying. O'Sullivan and E Wallace are very similar. Others include Campion, Costello Brennan

The full forward line - Others Shane Walsh (I'd like to see him get some more game time in the league), Lenihan, Dardis, Conlon)

We have plenty of good individuals to choose from - maybe we have blended as a team yet!

TBF to you mate, thats not a bad stab at things.

Personally
GK - there is no alternative. McEntee is too stubborn to change this
Defence - I'd make a case for Ross in the corner ahead of Gallagher and Ronan in there ahead of Harnan. I'd have NIall Kane at 7 with James McEntee in the Half forward line
MF - spot on i believe. There's an argument for Brian Conlon who's being played everywhere and not getting a chance to master anywhere
Half forwards - McEntee as a back tracker ala scully and howard, Newman and AN other. Newman at 11 as playmaker an accurate kicker into the FF line
Full forwards - Joey or James, Walsh and Lenihan

Mayo have named a relatively inexperienced side, but expect to see A O Shea in from the start due to the very poor weather forecast. Fitness and S/C to be severely tested on Sunday.

Big Mayo support traveling up.....many traveling up sat....hopefully a call is made well before throw in....I believe many local hotels are full. What condition is the pitch like in Navan?

Yes, hopefully it goes ahead, Pairc tailteann is great surface and mostly likely the game will not be called of because of surface. Unless the GAA take wider approach for people not travel for safely reasons rather than pitch surface. That would be my take on it anyway.

Parc Tailteann surface is one of the best in the country, will take an awful lot of rain for it to be unplayable

As usual we'll hear 30 mins before throwin that game is off.

Will we see 14 men behind the ball with a storm force wind at our backs?

Good to hear....game likely to go ahead so. Do t think the east coast is to be hit as bad as the west...Mayo gone orange alert now but imagine conditions will get better the further east you go.

Looking forward to the game....it's a real relegation 4 pointer.

Replying To bobkarlgees:  "I am not optimistic in getting any sort of a result. I taught we would bring more intensity to our play than we did last Sunday. We did well in defense for long periods in the first half last week. But we never got any momentum due to very slow build up and lack of accuracy's from our forwards.
Also teams know what to do to beat us, any time we got a clean break Donegal just pulled our jersey and gave away a free in our half back line time and time again. Refs are soft on it. Its good tactic the most your going to get is a tick or yellow. we need to do the same it was feature in the super 8s a-well. It totally kills the counter attack and momentum.
We have been very poor in the midfield so far if your not going to get at least 50% in midfield your just not going to win these big games. I would say we well below 50% in midfield
Its been mentioned before but players seem afraid to shoot or just not the confidence to either way we are not scoring half enough its been poor. Also we are struggling badly against well organized defenses, and find it very hard to break them down.
So think its a uphill struggle on Sunday. Could be long day in the office aagain"
I would be inclined to agree with almost everything you say.

Noticed the consistent fouling whenever we ran at Donegal. Very cynical and nasty but we were not cute enough ourselves to do it.

I think the assessment on midfield is slightly off purely based on the lack of 50-50 contest which is now redundant in the game. The aerial duals are gone in Gaa.

I suppose I would be saying that we are poor around the midfield area in that our kick out retention is poor as we do not appear to man up on players. Opposition get kick outs uncontested to their men and we seem to struggle unless ours are short.

A short kick out will come back to bite us very soon.

I do not believe Meath will win a game this campaign and fear losing could become a habit.

But I do think that if we have a strong panel to pick from that we can hang in that Top 8 area for a few seasons

The pitch is probably best in country, no danger of that been the reason. However health and safety on a wider scale may cause its cancellation.

Same team named I see. I wonder will it actually start that way. Probably, but it does show the lack of strength in depth of panel (with the injuries). Especially in attack; being seriously questioned. No major scoring threat upfront. 1-9 & 0-7 is a poor return in opening two matches. It wouldn't be good enough to win in any division.

When you look at the figures it is not great. We only converted 38% & 36% of our created opportunities against Tyrone & Donegal respectively. Compared to 55% for Tyrone and 49% for Donegal against us. While, IMO, Tyrone and Donegal's conversion rate is low, they did what they had to do, to win. If you compare that to last year, as a whole including our low scoring Leinster Final, Meath's average scoring was 16.1 points/match. And our convertion rate was up around 57% (I dont had it to hand). Granted some opposition was lower divisions (ie. Divisions 2 & 3), but nonetheless much more impressive figures, showing that Meath's missing forwards are missed!

If we can contain the Mayo attack and late runs, a low scoring result "may be" on the table. Here's hoping!!! Defensively we are okay, but it's the runs at angles from deep by better footballers (in this year's National Football league) which is causing serious problems for our defence. Yes we are missing defenders, but I do not think that the replacements, are that far behind, in terms of ability & development.

I will always believe, but it is a serious serious learning curve for all involved throughout 2020. Hopefully one Meath can evolve better from!
