Tactics if Meath play Dublin next year?

Winning any competition is always better than winning none - you have to start somewhere. Everyone want to win the AI but most counties in any year have a chance approaching Zero."
Yes we did win it. But we then struggled to remain in a average div 2 only scraping a lucky win against a shambolic Laois team, we then went out and lost to Dublin playing to keep score board respectively (which didn't work.) then got beat by a very poor Derry team after collapsing in second half for the umpteenth time.
Winning the obc can be a good thing if it's built upon, but it wasn't last time

Tactics for Dublin? Keep it simple and go out and beat them.

Can we play Dublin next year?? Don't think so....vause that'd mean beating a half decent team in a semi final and that's just not happening. We are so far behind it's actually sad. That game Sunday actually looks like a different sport to the dros we get served up on a weekly basis be it within meath or in div 2....and I now realise that altho I believe mcentees is right man for the job...its actually an impossible task he faces. Best case scenario....peak for league and get to final but then a woeful championship as we'll have peaked to early. I genuinely feel we would need to play 20 v 15 to even come close to dubs

Replying To oldsam_newsam:  "I can see Jack's point but it would never happen, no manager would do that and what would you say to the supporters forking out money tp attend the game.

What I WOULD say is that we need to be planning to bring the underage setup unto a new level. Off the top of my head something like this....

1. Encourage as many clubs as possible to employ a full time coaching officer. I think central GAA will fund 50% and the clubs are asked to pay the other 50%.
2. My proposal is for the Meath board to fund 10 - 20% of the clubs contribution. This could be funded by an online Lotto or similar funded weekly by the likes of US with weekly €2 or €5 subscriptions with a carrot of anyone on the €5 subscription allowed free into club games in the county.
3. These coaching officers to hopefully link with the local schools and WIDEN THE PLAYING BASE. We need as many of the new foreign youngsters playing GAA from an early age and give further encouragement with introductiory memberships of clubs etc.
4. Get a consistent approach across the county and expand the programmes of excellence (and fully repick the players at each stage).

Just touching on it there but we need to be expanding our player base big time and really doing a good job at developing the good ones and increasing the numbers involved in development squads big time."
If i was Andy I would do as I suggested above but I'd also go on a big media campaign telling all supporters to boycott the match as a protest to the gaa for the ridiculous financial situation of the last 10 years. At least then when our second team gets a 50 point hammering it will be mostly dubs wasting their money to watch it.

And it would actually achieve 2 goals. A protest, whilst preparing the team better for the qualifiers. I'd have so much respect for Andy if he actually did this.

Replying To Crinigan:  "Nobody can compete with Dublin because they are a professional team and are funded to the tune of millions by the GAA, the government (5 million under Bertie's govt), AIG , Aer Lingus etc. Its a ridiculous and frankly laughable situation...they are like a combo of PSG/Man City/Chelsea playing every game at home, in the Vauxhall Conference.

I'd rather Meath didn't enter a team in the senior championship until the GAA find a way of reversing this gross injustice and we just focused on developing our club championship, coaching and facilities so that in 5-10 years time we can compete.

If you find that completely unbelievable, just wait until you see the amount of big name players that are going to drop off the Meath panel in the next couple of months. Intercounty football for the moment is dead."
Now that's an even better suggestion. All leinster counties should boycott the championship until Dublin our made play in a different province each year. So they'd only walk the leinster title every 4 years. Too much damage has been done. At least with them gone you'd have a super competitive leinster championship again.

Boycott the championship would you just calm it down, we need to concentrate on our own in house affairs and reaching this standard and blaming the GAA and funding , this thread is nuts, the following are FACTS I find very interesting that i took from another thread.

2011 they beat kerry by 1 POINT
In 2013 they beat mayo by 1POINT
In 2015 they beat Kerry by 3 points after beating Mayo in a semi-final replay
in 2016 they beat mayo by 1 point in the replay
and in 2017 they beat Mayo against the run of play some what by 1 point.

So forget about how everyone else is doing and worry about An Mhi reaching the top level

Fair point also Andy must be the first manager to ever have his head called for after improving what he inherited.

It's nearly a must to have a basketball coach involved in a inter county football team 3feetoftimber...personal i don't know if Andy has any?

look at dublin or Mayo the little pauses in mid play ..a feint move to the right will create a yard of space on the left for a player to move into !

Dublin have skillful players..but most of it is a development skill not from gaa football but basketball !

Mayo are the kings of the tackle without question..but they only tackle for the ball without even touching the player like basketball !

people will say we don't have the players ..my thinking is we are not developing the players and molding them into a new modern day footballer !

David Beggy is probably the only gaa footballer suited for modern day football ..he is fast, worked hard of the ball, good tackler and getting back to help defence ! But he wasn't a gaelic footballer ,but Sean Boylan molded him and created him into what was suited for gaa football back then ! And David Beggy got two all stars ! You need something different you need to think outside the box,you can't copy defensive systems or Dublin or Mayo..we have to come up with our own way of play our system not anybody else's !

Because if you're copying others well you're doing things wrong!

I, d say we should play the "B" team each time we are to play dublin. Have them all wear goggles so they wont be gouged and play the A team in the qualifiers. I'd keep on doing this until the GAA start spreading the funding around

There is a right kind of protest and a wrong kind of protest !

The truth is the best kind of protest..I personally believe the championship is now to long on a calendar year for amateur players ! And fixtures don't seem to be less but more (super 8)

Croke park is ran by sales men who think of profits first and people last ! So they are always going to find ways and means to make profits on the laboring back of armature players ! It's sad how croke park works !

My way of protest would be not to play the Leinster championship at all...give back the power to the club's, concentrate on our own club fixtures and let our players play more games for the club's rather that train the guts of yourself 6 days a week just to play two games in the Leinster championship ! It's stupidity for amateur sport !

Just play the back door system..if you win you win ..lose you lose !

Put in place a good club championship structure for all also I would love a over 38 championship in Meath because a lot of ex players still like to keep fit .... concentrate more on the under age football in Meath also !

Leinster championship is not worth a dam for 10 other counties that play in it...just give more power back to club football and not play the Leinster championship next year and go full throttle in the backdoor system... because if you play you're first game in the backdoor the next game is a week later...and the next game is the next week...3 games in three weeks instead of the Leinster championship 1 game every 3 weeks and player's wrapped up in cotton wool and not even allowed to fart !

yes i would be in agreement with you here, the gaa have helped dublin so much that the natural cycles that led meath, kildare, laois, ofally, westmeath win leinsters in the past 37or so years are now no longer applicable, its turned professional for the dubs, the other counties cant compete, i'd forget about leinster and concentrate on the back door. GAA should be renamed DAA, its a pity really and a sad reflection on the gaa that they let this happen, all the other counties want is equal funding. I have an e mail i snet to croke park see below.......

I just wanted to contact you in relation to the GAA in general.

I have 3 kids and they all play. I assist in coaching them on a weekly basis.
I personally have got a lot of enjoyment from the GAA over the years, however I would like to point out the following.

The revenues available to some counties is far greater than others. This is the reason the Leinster Football Championship is a basket case.
One team seems to be able to play all their games at home, added to that they get a full section of Croke park to themselves. This I feel gives one team an unfair advantage. I would like to see Hill 16 bring divided in 2 with the opposing team getting 50% of the available tickets
The referring on Sunday was poor (Missed O Gara gouge, missed throwing away of Mayo goalies kick out tee, missed systematic fouling by Dublin forwards on Mayo defenders)
You seem to be letting Dublin away with murder. At this stage Dublin players have been charged with biting and gougeing X 1 (I am monitoring with interest what action is taken against O Gara). You (the GAA) seem to turn a blind eye. Is it that you rely on Dublin GAA more than they rely on you. It beggars belief that Dublin have not been taken to task about their cynical play, their dangerous play (biting, eye gougeing). As far as I can see Dublin now own the GAA. The Dublin interviews are stage managed, all they seem to talk about is "the moment" and how much they respect the opposition. I cant undertand why you guys dont take them to task. How about an audit on the monies the players get ? Would you guys level the playing field and treat all counties equally.

On a side note ex Dublin GAA players are setting an agenda in the media ( Charlie Redmond on the Lee Keegan throwing of the sat nav)This was not fair play by Lee but if Charlie is going to bring that up why does he not bring up the gouging incidents.

Anyone who was at meath club championship matches this weekend will understand the posters above calling for the leinster championship to be scrapped and straight knock out re introduced. Some cracking entertainment across meath.

If Dublin are not moved out of leinster and the status quo remains I'd be in favour of scraping the province altogether. They've won something like 12 of the last 13. I'm fairly certain that will be 19 of 20 in 7 years time. Basically we're fooling ourselves here.

Before the money men turned Dublin professional the province was superb even with the back door. It's weird that as the province went through its most competitive period ever (1996-2006) the gaa decides Dublin have to get better. the system is corrupt and needs to be scrapped.

At this stage I'd be more of a mind to concentrate on improving club football standards. It must be over 10yrs since the last Meath Senior champions got anywhere in the Leinster championship. Think it was Skyrne in 06 or 07. As for playing the Dubs, we're just not at the races at the moment. Andy and co need to go find about another 10 or so skillful players who are physically capable of performing like any of the Mayo or Dublin starting 15. Then if we need to get over everyone else in Leinster before even considering playing the Blue horde.

I like the definition of sport. I would also like to hear what the definition of football is. When football has more handpasses than kick passes, what is it? Is this why the game is now resembling basketball and rugby (without offside). In order to catch up with the current big 3 or 4, does the playing field need to be re-leveled and concentration on "foot"ball be reintroduced. Can the development move away from big fast athletes who just throw the ball around? To athletes who can catch and kick and use space? Dublin are just better at this than most other counties. And will remain to be so with the machine that drives them behind them.
