FL Div 3: Quick start sets Rathkenny up for win

The visitors came away with both points in this P S Supplies Doors and Floors’ Football League Division 3 match played in Athboy last Wednesday evening, April 17th.

Rathkenny shot out of the blocks and by the first quarter mark were leading 3-3 to no score. An opening minute point from David Curtis was followed a minute later by a goal from Oisin Cummins Fuller after a super David Curtis pass. The hosts then hit two wides before the visitors also put one wide. Things improved further for Rathkenny when James O’Hare calmly slotted home after been found in space by Niall Branigan on seven minutes. Rathkenny netminder Cathal McCabe was brought into action with a 10th minute save before corner forward Oisin Cummins Fuller fisted between the posts from the following attack. Oisin Cummins Fuller then landed his second goal when found by a great through pass from Jack Gore on thirteen minutes. Ciaran O’Hare sent over a lovely point on the quarter hour mark and Rathkenny were in control. 

The hosts hit their purple patch when scoring 1-3 without reply in the following six minutes to reduce the gap to six. Noah Jenkinson popped over a point from play with six minutes of the half remaining. There was still time for two pointed frees from the hosts before David Curtis sent over the final score of the half right on 30 minutes. Clann na nGael 1-5 Rathkenny 3-5.

Rathkenny got the opening second half score through Noah Jenkinson on 52 seconds. The hosts replied with a point before Cathal McCabe was called into action again with a low save. However, the Athboy men eventually found the net again and when they popped over a 38th minute free the gap was down to two. This proved to be the hosts final score as Rathkenny steadied the ship with a super point from Noah Jenkinson following a great team move. Rathkenny continued to empty the bench as additional scores came from Oisin Cummins Fuller on 47 and David Curtis on 54 minutes. The hosts tried hard to close the gap but wides and a 45 were the closest they got before referee Pat Clarke blew the final whistle after two minutes of injury time.
