Somebody out there does not like us

Simonstown are on the road again, this time to Mullingar to take on St. Lomans

When was the last time a Meath team got a home draw in the Leinster senior club championship?

It was that long past that one was nearly reluctant to research this query. But somebody tells us that it was in 2011 and that Summerhill were the lucky boys. Six long years?

Maybe it is one, long, big coincidence but the football draw for the Leinster junior, intermediate and senior club competitions in 2017 was definitely a strange one as far as the competing Meath teams were concerned.

Basically speaking the situation could have developed that had the three Meath teams won their individual grades then they would have played every match outside the county.

Meath Hill and Curraha were sent packing, narrowly and unluckily on both occasions and now it is left for Simonstown to carry the can.

But we are talking about nine indiviual matches here, none on Meath soil. Three quarters, three semi's and the three finals.

Meath Hill went to Drogheda where they beat Glen Emmets in the quarter finals but fell foul of Erin Rovers in deepest Offaly in the semi final.

Curraha also took on the Louth winners and beat O Connells in Catlebellingham. They then tried to get their semi final clash with Ballyboughal moved to a more appropriate venue with suitable facilities. But Leinster Council were having none of it.

Needless to say but Curraha too, despite scoring five more times than a game opposition, lost out.

Simonstown had a round trip of near 400 km's to make before beating Starlights in Wexford town.

This despite travelling through Enniscorthy, the home of their opponents Starlights, who possess the best of playing facilities, certainly ones capable of staging the game and thus adding another 50 km to a long journey. Seems like facilities suit when they suit.

The conspiracy theorists out there will have a field day. But perhaps we are like your man in America who is going up in a self made rocket over the weekend to prove to all and sundry that the earth is indeed flat.

If and we are told it is a big if, should Simonstown beat hot favourites St Lomans in Mullingar on Sunday then Leinster Council could fix the provincial final for Navan. Ah look, only joking, wouldn't Aughrim be a far more suitable venue.

And just to finish off on our little piece, the three winners of the Meath Ladies Football competitions were all drawn away from home in the opening round of the Leinster. Ask Clann na nGael how they were treated. God bless Dunboyne who have performed wonderfully.
