Tailteann Cup 2023 - 5 Like(s)

Replying To CARPS:  "Hello, Kilkenny man. If you think Graiguecullen is in Leix, you probably need to look at a map. It's in Carlow. Always has been. Two of the starting players last weekend, against Down, are from County Carlow. Graigue won 13 Carlow championships, but they were suspended - due to a violent incident - and Leix (opportunistically, because Graigue were so good, at the time), swooped in and took advantage. Since then, Leix has leeched off Carlow. There was a chance to resolve the situation in the 1990s (because Leix legend Leo Turley transferred to Carlow's Eire Og and Graigue's objection was thrown out) but Carlow had a very meek County Board at the time who accepted a dumb "triangle" arrangement. That was a very bad mistake. Leix has six Leinsters, yes. But they have almost double the population of Carlow. Plus, they add to it by claiming part of Carlow town. Everyone of those six was won with Carlow men on board. In reality, the real losers here are Graiguecullen, The club would have been better off staying in Carlow. Countless players have transferred way from it - or never joined up in the first place - because they don't want to play in Leix. Anyway, CC2020, Carlow next year will play senior hurling and intermediate football; Leix will play intermediate in both. And Kilkenny will play junior football and senior hurling. That speaks volumes. Given the population numbers involved."

Tailteann Cup Crowd Issues - 2 Like(s)
Agreed, I was there yesterday and it was a mess. The unreserved seating was a shambles. As soon as the first match was over you had lots of the Meath/Antrim crowd leaving, you had people only coming in at that stage for the second match and you had people who were stuck in the Canal who were trying to get around to the vacated seats in the lower Hogan for a better seat. They all converged on the one concourse at the same team all trying to move in different directions, and then you had people queuing for toilets and food/drink blocking the way for thousands of people. A mess, and as you say, lucky people weren't hurt.

Very happy to see Laois bouncing back a bit this year. There's no doubt confidence was shaken last year where fine margins really cost us, conceding a 72nd minute equaliser to Antrim and losing to Limerick with the last kick of the game were the 2 moments that relegated us really and when we started to slip we just couldn't get our feet under us again. Wicklow exposed that brittle confidence in the first round of Leinster, but it's easy to forget we were 3 points up against Westmeath in the second half of the Tailteann Cup game until we had a man sent off, so we weren't too far away. Billy has introduced a few new faces this year, I think only one of the back 7 who has started the league games this year played in that position last year. Getting Robbie Piggott and Timmons back in defence has been a great lift and Colum Murphy has probably been the best forward in club football in the county for the past 3 years so it'll be a big asset to get him back involved. The team also seems to have a clear way that they want to play now with quick direct kick passing into the forwards and the likes of O'Carroll, Kingston, Barry and Lowry should cause issues for any defence this year. Two big wins so far, Sligo were slight favourites with the bookies in the opening match and great to get the monkey off the back last weekend, getting a win at home for the first time since Feb 2020! I definitely thought Wexford had more about them than Sligo, much sharper and more direct way of playing and Wexford kicked some great scores especially in the first half with the wind. I think Laois still favourites for promotion but the derby games against Carlow are always tight and Leitrim in Carrick is looking like a very tough game as Leitrim are flying. The manager will be keeping the feet on the ground, he made a point of saying Laois weren't 5 points better than Wexford last week and it was only our fast start that eventually carried us through. As always with the league though injuries could yet play a key part, so I'm sure there's lots of twists and turns to come.

I see the Meath men are discussing how many points they will lose to Dublin by...they must have beaten Laois already!

Replying To Andy:  "No arguments here, best of luck to Meath in the final, really hope you put it up to the dubs now. Think the 11 point difference in the end was a tad harsh on Laois as I think on balance of play they were closer than the score line suggested. Meath far more clinical though with their chances."
Outclassed and outgunned. Meath by far the more clinical forwards, for all our posession we never looked like putting up a decent score. Normal full back & centre back sitting in the stands. Our best forward subbed after 20 mins 2/3 good goal chances not taken Entire half forward line subbed for the second game in a row. The lads tried hard, some good young players coming through, and they'll have better days. Menton good going forward, but Laois won a lot of ball around the middle in the first half, which Meath will have to tidy up. Conlon looks very promising. Best of luck in the final, hope you can give the Dubs a rattle!

2024 NFL Division 4 Discussion thread - 1 Like(s)
Getting too familiar with the recurring Division 4 thread unfortunately! Good start last weekend, can immediately see the influence of the new manager and coaching team in terms of making us stronger down the middle. Use of the fly keeper is something we did well under John Sugrue a couple of years ago when we went from Div 4 to Div 2 and got to Leinster Final, but we went away from it when Graham Brody stepped away from the panel. Not surprised to see an Armagh man bring it back as a tactic considering the success of Rafferty in that role. We had to go back to basics defensively after the shambles of the Tailteann semi final last year so I expect that to be an emphasis in the league. Don't think we have the firepower to put teams away so you'd expect every game to be tight. Also good to see 3/4 new lads commit to the panel this year and make their debut, with still a couple of the older guard to come back, as always I've nothing but admiration for lads that make so many sacrifices to pull on the jersey for little reward. So a good start, but we said that last year when we beat Sligo up in Sligo on the opening day last year, and that didn't turn out as we hoped…lots of twists to come no doubt!

Meath V Laois - 1 Like(s)
Ticket bought and train booked, all we need now is the weather! Should be a good game. Brody's runs not as evident against Westmeath a couple of weeks ago, maybe lessons learned from the league final. Couple of key players went off injured the last day, and O'Flynn who was wing back is now in the middle of his leaving cert, so team selection will be interesting. I'm expecting a tight game, Meath 2 point favourites which is about right, so we're hoping for an upset!

Cork vs Laois: Laois by 2 - If Cork bring in their form against Kerry they will win by 4/5. But hoping they bring their league form Tyrone vs Cavan: Tyrone by 3 - They have all the momentum, but I hope i'm wrong, would love to see Cavan in Super 8s Galway vs Mayo: Galway by 2 - Connaught final was surely a wake up call for Galway & Mayo riddled with injuries Meath vs Clare: Clare by 2 - Leinster final was an outlier, but I saw Meath against Laois and they weren't as impressive as the final scoreline suggested and they struggled over Offaly. Clare able to live with Kerry and Mullingar a tough place to go and win, they have the momentum

Looking forward to tomorrow's game in OMP. Laois with 3 wins out of three but played very poorly the last day and now likely to be down 3/4 starters between suspension and injuries. Evan O'Carroll especially will be a big loss as the main target man in the full forward line. The beating we took in Aughrim last year will be fresh in the mind. Wicklow 4/1 with the bookies which looks very over priced, i'm expecting a very tight game, hoping Laois come through it but if Wicklow win it won't be a major upset. Safe travels to all Wicklow people making the trip!

He was on the sideline on Friday night when Laois played Offaly in a challenge match in Portlaoise so shocking to hear this news come-in less than 48 hours later. Will be fondly remembered by Laois Gaels as he very capably filled the big shoes of Micko when he took over at Laois and got us back to a Leinster Final. Thoughts with his family and friends and to the lads in the Offaly Senior Team.

Well done Leix. Finally put in a 70 minute performance. Should've qualified in second after being miles ahead in both London and Offaly games. The lads took a lot of stick after the London game, would've been easy to down tools, but responded really well today. Will be away again next weekend, won't be easy no matter who we get, but also we'll be tough to beat. I've always said there's not much difference in any of the teams from the bottom of Div 2 to the top of Div 4 on a given day so with a bit of momentum you just wouldn't know.....

Replying To legendzxix:  "Limerick were in Division 2 this year, promoted fully on merit last year. If Limerick get past Laois, they'll be in a semi-final and people will still be writing them off. They are passing through under the radar so far despite winning their group after two games. They gave Clare a good game in the Munster semi-final."
Agree they have quietly gone about their business impressively. We matched them well in the league last year and had them beaten only for letting slip a lead late on, they kicked 2 points deep in injury time to win by a point. They went and got promoted and we fell into Div 4 on points difference, small margins! Hoping last weekend was a turning point for this Laois team as they finally saw out a lead. I hope that kindles a bit of confidence in them as they have taken knock after knock this year, it's a mostly young side and they can only grow in stature by grinding out a win on the road against a tough side. If Timmons misses out he is a huge blow, at 37 years of age he is still the heart of our team and an unbelievable servant to the county. Time for the likes of O'Carroll, Kingston and Collins to really step-up their performance to levels we all know they are capable of, and lead this team. Limerick are worthy favourites, but hoping there's a bit of momentum just starting to grow in us....

The Laois Rising. - 1 Like(s)
Don't know if anyone else from Laois has actually commented in this thread?! In my lifetime any big days Laois have had in HQ have always been football based (and only a handful of days at that), so what these group of lads and the management team have done this year is extra special as it's the hurlers. Laois have always had the hurlers, but not the discipline and the collaboration to put it together at inter county level. As everyone else is saying, the hope now is it is a springboard to further improvement that brings more lads into the fold and raises the standard, and not just a flash in the pan. Just one comment on yesterday's game, I thought the ref was brutal, for both sides. Every collision was a foul, cheap yellow cards, no advantage played to the attacking team, and he really didn't help the game as a spectacle. What lads were getting yellow cards for in the second game, wasn't even a foul in the first game! Nice touch by Tipp in sticking around to applaud off the Laois boys. Best of luck to them in the semi, I expect them to improve by 90-100%!

Replying To dickie10:  "hopefully you beat Laois, there a spiteful enough crowd when their dander is up as meath fans will tell you in 80s and early 90s we had a very toxic relationship. dont be in awe of them anyway, the last time they were in croke park last june they made a show of themselves vs Down"
Ha ha, what a completely out-of-touch comment! Very best of luck to Leitrim today. I watched you hammer us in Carrick last year and out fight us in the second half in Portlaoise this year so I've no idea how the bookies have Laois as 4 point favourites, it'll be a very close game. Couldn't believe the crowd you brought to Portlaoise for the league game where you easily outnumbered the home support, and I'm sure today will be no different in Croker. Enjoy the day!

Fair play to any of the Wexford fans that travelled up, there was a good spread around the stand. The strong wind made it a real game of two halves, as in the league there wasn't much between the teams, the Laois goal before half time from the goalie mistake really turned the game. I see the comment above to say Wexford aren't strong enough for Sam Maguire and either are Laois let's be honest, all the best in the Tailteann!
