Ok Fredflint, so 5 or 6 points in Div 1, that sounds reasonable on the face of it, but then you think to yourself where are we to get these 5 or 6 points, that is if we do make it up to Div 1( I still don't think the results are going to pan out for Terry and the lads on Sunday, but i hope Im wrong). Are we going to beat Cork, Kerry, Dublin,mayo, donegal, That leaves you 3 games to pick up those points, must wins, and i would be fearful of us doing that. Not even Terry with the luck he has could orchestrate that, especially if the games in Breffni! where according to certain people in the cavan media (paper and radio) we cant even beat Div 2 teams because we are at such a disadvantage playing there haha)

Maybe there is a chance if Cavan do as they do now and play more or less the championship team in every game with the same faces, after training from late September the previous year, and we are at peak fitness for the league as we always are, that we could suprise a few of the top teams who are experimenting. Maybe, and that could be classed as a type of progress, but we would probably have to play a more even extreme verison of the football we are the at the minute, and frankly i don't know if I could stomach that.

At the minute its nip and tuck between all teams in Div 2, Cavan were not better or worse than any of the teams by 4-5 points, all a much of muchness as far as im concerned, whereas I would say ( and people may disagree if Tyrone or Derry get relegated from Div 1, they would swat aside the overwhelming majority of the teams in Div 2, that is the angle im looking at. I would be fearful of a good few hammerings that is all fredflint, might set the small bit of progress that has been made by P Donnelly and J MCarthy and the lads back.

What i would class as real material progress would be a proper showing in the real deal, and that the championship, an if we lost to Monaghan, i feel that despite the possibility of promotion to Div 1, that progress where it counts has ground to a halt, and we may need a change of direction, as the sometimes basketball that we currently play for Terry may need to be changed even though i though that was what we were paying McHale the €€€€ for.

Lets get some perspective here. DeanMartin says he is still here after the Galway and Westmeath wins. Martin you never posted in the Galway thread after the win. You never posted in the Westmeath thread after the win about the match. In fact I cant find DeanMartin Congratulating Terry and his players on securing Division 2 football for next year anywhere on the hoganstand. Its 3 days since we secured it but I cant seem to find his post here or on the Westmeath forum. Why is that Martin?

Best to try and get to division 1 now.

Division 2 will be a slog fest next year with so many Ulster Teams and could end up with anyone promoted or relegated.

If we stay in Division 2 this year there is no guarantee that we will be in it after next year could be back in Division 3.

So, in summary, you're suggesting that as Cavan didn't score in a half of McKenna Cup football that no progress has been made. That implies that had Cavan scored or performed to some higher level in that same half of football that progress would have been made. You then contradict yourself by saying that progress can only be measured by the championship game against Monaghan.

Page is getting ridiculous and hard to read these times. How can anyone answer who we will get points of next year without knowing who's going to be in the division, who you be playing home and away etc. Also are we seriously still talking about a McKenna Cup game n January, there have been many teams this year who have gone scoreless for long periods including the Dubs at the weekend who managed one point in 35 minutes against Derry.

Also losing to Monaghan would be huge failure you say? You talk as if there a division 4 team, they have beaten all ulster teams they played this season, all of which would be rated better than us. Dont get me wrong I believe we can beat Monaghan, no doubt about it. We have improved since 2 years ago just like they have. A huge disappointment maybe but not a failure I don't think.

i for one hope we beat Meath the weekend, whatever that means in terms of league position so be it, this league campaign will have been a success. we should stop worrying about next years league and look forward to the summer ahead.

Looks like this thread was frozen last night and maybe a good thing. It got out of topic and I didn't help things conversing with a troll who really showed his measure when he cant congratulate his own county players on maintaining division 2 status. No point conversing with that kind. I had a post not put up and it was reactionary.
Anyway back to basics. Big game on Sunday. Meath are in the same boat as us, decent league, few nice scalps along the way and in reality this game can go either way. Both supporters and players will be gunning for glory and really no one will care about other results until after. This game is a derby and hopefully will be a cracker, Bring on the Royals!! Its a big game. Hey its Cavan versus the Stone Throwers, its always a big game! I would be skeptical about Cavan going up to the 1st division, but a victory against Meath is always massive! The difference in standards from Division 1 and 2 is huge, but Cavan over the years have always had a big performance for the Stone throwers. It would be lovely to have a half-time score of 10-1 again like two years ago, but here's hoping. McKiernan was immense that day, but will have his hands full with Gillespie who was amazing against Down. Looking towards the summer it would be great to see the players stand up, and give a strong performance!Will Killian Clarke be available? Will Terry let the players play the ball long and move the ball faster? They have been dogged and hardworking in last games, but will need a higher score and performance to beat Meath. There should be a great crowd in An Uaimh, the crypt, and above all it is imperative that Cavan give a solid performance. Firstly to survive in division 2 is very well done by Terry's army, and to fight for victory against Galway n Westmeath when facing trouble was tough and deserved. The team is climbing, just would love to see more scores, forward play and maybe a goal or two. Up Breffini

Cavan beat Meath easily a couple of seasons ago,they were very sharp that night,played a blanket,but were ruthless in attack.Meath are usually better in the latter stages of the league and I think we are in a better position than we were 2 years ago.It will be tight,but I think Meath may scrape through.

I can see everybodys points of view here... In all reality gaelic football is in a terroble state at present and the whole blame lies with managers and coaches who have addapted a win at all costs attutide to justify their often huge pay packs... Good GAA people...players and supporters are turning their backs on the game... Even our great new president could not see what was wrong with the Dublin v Derry game and thinks its a one off...
