Cavan V Armagh

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Right lads the league is over and although croke park was disappointing we got what we set out to achieve and are promoted. Saturdays game while disappointing might just be the wake up call needed to show that theres still lots to work on over the next 6 weeks. Important challenge match saturday v galway. Important that jack brady, alan clarke & david givney get a full game into there legs.

Does anybody know whats wrong with jason mc loughlin?

Does anybody know if any of the under 21s were called into the panel other than the 2 already on it argue and clarke. Conor Moynagh would be a worth taking a chance on if hes fit.

we have seen enough....starting 15 should be...
Gilsenan
McLoughlin, Dunne, Clarke
McEnroe, Clarke, Flanagan
McKiernan, O'Reilly
Mackey,McDermott,Reilly
Dillon,Givney,Keating

Argue unlucky but we need a better mix in the middle and with this set up we have the Givney option with Argue on the bench if and when neeed

we have better options inside and more ball winner options which will be critical against better teams..... we need reliability in this area to move on.
K Clarke can be used in a number of spots as an option depending on what is needed
there is cover on the bench for a number of other possibilities and also cover across all lines
some on the bench unlucky....some not completely ready yet and finally others may be better coming on and not starting.

on the bench
M Reilly
M Argue
R Flanagan
D MCVitty
J Hayes
K Brady
C Moynagh
J Brady
K Tierney

I like that team DD10 , wouldn't be disappointed to see that line up at all . Bit of a risk in it but that's not the team he's gonna pick though . Martin Dunne will start against Armagh - assume that should be M Dunne first name on substitutes? I would be surprised if Jack Brady does not start as well . Can't see Givney being a full forward - was worth a try but he's weak with his back to goal - contests everything though . Wing backs is a very close call but can't argue with what you've gone with .
Personally I'd love to see Mackey play inside with maybe McKiernan in the half forwards and Givney midfield . But unfortunately we need him outfield so will probably never happen .

Aaron Kernan injured again, would be a huge loss for Armagh if he ruled out. I think James Farrely should be tried in nets in the upcoming challange games. Conor Gilsenan makes one to many mistakes for a County keeper imo.

FoolsGold,

Agree with you about Farrelly, should be given a chance.

yep agree with that about Farrelly getting a run, in saying that O'Meara deserves a run too

Yep agree ... This will not be the selected team. The team picked will be predictable and the performance and pattern as well.
I am trying to ensure our best is there .... In my opinion MCLoughlin, k Clarke, mck, Mackey and Keating .... With our better bets beside them
There are some like wing backs that are a tight call and the McKiernan givney argue oreilly corr Brady conundrum is not clear but we cannot have two similar players in the middle .... We need a direct ball winner and a workhorse
As for Dunne .... For me we know he is good and what can do .... But I feel his level is clear !.... And we need to start thinking beyond simple holding our own
I like the bench best ..... Could be decent impact there too

DD10 , what do you think of a half forward line combination of say G McKiernan/Argue/Reilly/McDermott (could possibly add in Jack Brady there plus some likely U21s coming through) and keeping Mackey inside . Could it work?

I'd leave Mackey at 10 ... He can do more there of what he's good at ( carrying and drawing frees,
Passing)
Otherwise I think we need ground
Coverers and workers there

Gilsenan
K. Clarke, Dunne, Hayes
F. Flanagan, A. Clarke, McEnroe
Gearoid, D. O'Reilly
Argue, McDermott, M. Reilly
Mackey, Keating, Dunne

I believe that this is our current strongest starting 15. Whether or not the balance is right isn't certain and Terry is likely to want some more defensive stability in there with Killian Brady. A lot will depend on how they want to match up to Armagh but if we were to put out our strongest starting team I think that is it.

Ah here lads, Martin Dunne was one of the highest championship scorers last year and people are considering leaving him out. He scored 0-9 against Armagh last year. He will be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

all you post is correct...... doesn't make it right though !

does he bring enough against the better teams?
could Armagh neuter him without too much trouble?
if he is shut down.... do we have enough else where?
could Dillon do a job? ( get 3 or 4 pts and win ball possible winning frees/ bringing others into it)

People are not forgetting the game against Armagh but they are also remembering the game against Monaghan as well . Dunne is a fine footballer but there are going to be times when he's not going to be our go to man at all . He will need to develop another dimension to his game and it's possible this is not there - unfair to expect him to be something he's not .
One thing that's glaringly lacking in our inside line is taking defenders on in one and one situations . That's why I'd like to see Mackey tried here - there's a buzz about him when he gets the ball , he has great footwork , great ball control and acceleration . He's very positive and doesn't need an invitation to take a lad on . At the moment if the opportunity to shoot is not there we just turn back on ourselves . I know people say we need him outfield but there are other options and it would free up a spot for Argue say . Plus we have some good ball carriers coming through from U21 . Teams are also targeting Mackey and he has been negated in his role in some games . It's another option .
