Limerick V Kilkenny - 3 Like(s)
What part of Limerick was the Ref from ? He was atrocious, it seemed as if he was willing Limerick to make a game of it when they were being beaten out the gate by a clinical KK team. The penalty was a joke, in real-time or in slow-motion. The KK backs hurley was being held by the Limerick forward at the start of the move, the KK player did put his left hand on the Limerick players back but there were so many other plays that this ref let play on that it was obvious that he wanted to give Limerick a chance to get back into the game. He was very in-consistent. I liked the way he let them hurl their way out of most of the "huddles" but then on too many occasions he blew against KK when there was no obvious infraction. The Ref's job is not to enhance the game as a spectacle, i.e. make it close at the end. His job is to enforce the rules, equally and consistently. Its so obvious that the GAA wants ref's at these games to influence the outcome of the game so that they end up being closer than they really should be. KK were playing 16 men for 70 minutes which is a disgrace. I'm so glad that the best team ended up winning, it would have been a travesty if they had been denied by someone who didn't carry a hurl on the field of play.

Dublin V Roscommon - 2 Like(s)
If you have ever played sport or know anything about sport you will know that no game is a foregone conclusion, that is why Japan can beat Zuid Africa in the Rugby World Cup, why Leicester can win the premiership, why Caltra can win the All Ireland club championship, why Offaly can deny Kerry a 5 in a row and why Roscommon can take Dublin in their own back yard next Saturday. Its not probable but most definitely possible. The loss to Tyrone might actually benefit Roscommon, the shackles are off, the expectation is low so they can express themselves and run at Dublin and use their very obviously talented forwards to frighten the bejaysus out of the Dublin defence. If the two goal opportunities that Roscommon created in the Tyrone game had come off they would have gained momentum and Tyrone's heads would have dropped, it didn't happen, so coulda, woulda, shoulda... Can this Roscommon team beat the Dubs, of course they can, will they next Saturday, probably not. If they stay within 7 or 8 points of the Dubs then the general consensus would be that "it was a good result for Roscommon". Anthony Cunningham won't be of that opinion and he is dead right, Roscommon can beat Dublin and that should be their goal. They need to put the Dubs on the back foot, if they are chasing the game like last weekend Dublin will waltz it. Roscommon Population = 65K ish Mayo Population = 130K ish (twice Roscommon's) Galway Population = 258K ish (4 times Roscommon's) Dublin Population = 1.3 million (20 times Roscommon's) Fortunately, there will only be 15/20 Rossies competing against 15/20 Dubs on Saturday but the Odds are stacked against the Rossies obviously. Roscommon to win by 10.

Mayo Waiting In The Long Grass - 2 Like(s)
Mayo people don't know what long grass looks like, heather, ferns and rushes on the other hand.... On paper Mayo would be the only remaining team that the Dubs would fear or dare I say respect. They will hammer either Cavan or Tipp by at least 15 points. That's purely on form, however tis 2020. My dream final would be Tipp v. Cavan. If not then a Mayo v. Dublin final would be the best possible outcome for us neutrals. The boys from the west are not afraid of the city slickers and know that they are their match given the right circumstances and with a bit of luck. Its easy to say the Dubs will win this AI but there are still 4 teams left so all of them are in with a chance. It might be a sour tasting AI to win keeping in mind that some counties didn't get a chance to compete for it because of Covid. I'd say that 3.6 million people would be shouting for Mayo against the Dubs if they both make the final. In one respect, we want them to win so we can all move on and stop talking about this silly curse etc. I feel sorry for Mayo over the last 30 years for not winning the big one as they were at least playing football whereas counties from other parts of the country have won AIs by stopping their opposition from playing rather than trying to play decent football themselves. Its a strange year, and one for the Westies methinks. Mayo for Sam and Galway for Liam !

U20 Football Championship 2020 - 2 Like(s)
Now this was a surprise. I would have expected the Rossies to have put up a better show. Are Galway really that good ? or was this a mediocre Roscommon team ? The early Galway goals seem to have knocked the stuffing out of this game as a competition. I feel for the young Roscommon lads, cos I don't think they are as bad as the scoreline reflects. And in the same vein I don't think Galway are as good as the scoreline would imply. Kerry in the semi's will be a different proposition, I think that this is going to deliver the eventual winners of the All Ireland final. Tyrone are going to drag Dublin down to their level and might just scrape a win, but the Kerry and/or Galway teams have way too much football for either Tyrone or Dublin.

Cork V Roscommon - 1 Like(s)
Roscommon should (statistically) beat Cork maybe once in every 20 games. The population of Cork is nearly 8 and a half times that of Roscommon. It was great to see Corks U20s win at the weekend as I think football needs a strong Cork, but there should still be room there for minnows like Roscommon who play a lovely brand of football. Counties like Cavan, Roscommon, Armagh, Sligo, Offaly, Kildare etc. haven't tasted success for a long time at National level but still commit themselves year in year out in trying to win Sam. And why not, yes, its going to be more difficult than in the 60's, 70's,80's and 90's but there will be minnows winning AIs in the future so why not Roscommon. Cork are simply too lazy, as Tommy Tiernan said "I'm from Cork, I'm great..." that kind of arrogance has resulted in Cork under-performing in both Football and Hurling for the last 15 years. Cork used to be perennial semi-finalists, finalists in football, now they are the whipping boys, even lowly Roscommon can travel to Cork and feel confident of beating them. Maybe they need to learn a bit of humility and accept that just because they are from Cork that they are not necessarily great.... If I was a betting man, I would actually bet that Roscommon would win a Football All-Ireland before Cork do next. Cork is the 3rd most populous county in Ireland and Roscommon is the 27th most populous. Cork, get your act together.

Congrats to NY on winning their first All Ireland at the weekend. And apparently the team was made up entirely of American born lads. This has to be good for the game in the US and England.

Roscommon Versus Galway - 1 Like(s)
Discuss... Can the Rossie's really beat the tribesmen. Galway are favourites and rightfully so, but Roscommon have turned them over a few times in recent years. The Roscommon forward line look very experienced and strong. It kicks off at 2pm tomorrow from Hyde Park. Comer is starting which will help Galway's cause but they haven't had a good league campaign. I've a feeling that Roscommon could just take this one by a point of two. What says the forum ?

Greatest Lost Talents In Your County - 1 Like(s)

Replying To liam500:  "Bit off topic but what advice would you give a very talented sixteen year old thinking of giving up the GAA and going across the water to persue pro soccer? Personally I would advise against it. Only a very small percentage actually make it, the rest get thrown aside and then have missed their best GAA years..."
Are you joking ? If the lad is in any way academic then obviously my recommendation would be to pursue a career in something tangible and more certain than sport. If not, then it's a no brainer. Why would any sensible, intelligent, responsible adult advise a 16 year-old to invest his time and energy on a career path which offers no financial reward, the risk of being thrown on the rubbish-heap if it doesn't work out or he gets injured is tremendous. And the pinnacle of his career might be to win a piece of tin that says "All Ireland medal" so that he can tell his grand children that he played and won an All Ireland when he was in his prime. If that's his only option, then the obvious way forward for the lad is to try and pursue a career in soccer that could potentially provide him and his family with an income. Its not certain and not without risk, but obviously a far better option than wasting his time with GAA.

NFL Division 2 - 1 Like(s)

Replying To Douglas_44:  "How is Roscommons chance of promotion "slight"? Every team in this division has a chance of promotion right now. Roscommon are 4th, and still have to play the 3 teams above them so it's still in their own hands. No team can be written off just yet."
My apologies, what I meant to say was that the Rossies chance of NOT being relegated was slight. If you look at the Odds of who is likely to be relegated and promoted from this Division, Roscommon are one of the favourites of being relegated. So, for me that would reinforce my view that they are on the way down rather than on the way up. Cavan are definitely favourites for going up and Roscommon are favourites for going down. Div 3 probably is where Roscommon are at, with all of the injuries and lads leaving for different reasons Roscommon are still boxing above their weight. Division 3 is probably where they belong. It would be great to see Westmeath getting promoted as I think they could compete at Div 1 for a few years.

Impressive win for Roscommon at the weekend. So, against the odds they are sitting in 3rd place behind Cavan and Armagh. It looks like they might survive. I still think that Westmeath are going to be the surprise package in this division and will get promoted. Cavan are obviously the standout Div 1 quality team in this Division, all other teams would struggle in Div 1 and drop down next year again. With 4 teams on 5 points its all to play for, Cavan and Westmeath are probably going up, with Clare and Fermanagh going down.

Fermanagh v Cavan........................Cavan Clare v Laois.......................................Laois Westmeath v Armagh......................Westmeath Kildare v Roscommon.....................Roscommon This is definitely one of the most competitive divisions and as a result the most entertaining. And the standard of football is very high, most of these teams could beat any of the Div 1 teams on a given day. I think the Rossie's main focus now is on staying in Div 2, their chance of being promoted is slight. I think Cavan and Westmeath are the team pushing for promotion. Clare and Fermanagh fighting to stay up in my opinion.
