Good analysis

notimpressed makes some valid points too; it's all a question of how you interpret stats and sports journalists do it all the time to back up an angle they are writing about. I'd question the journalists who put us in the top 10 teams in the country last year based on stats but way too optimistic as we now know. Very few supporters agreed with our rating last year but it led to a lot of hype and expectation that we could have done without.

As several posters have said it's the coaching that needs to be addressed, not the manager in my opinion. Watching the qualifiers shows just how
pedestrian the present team is and yet it wouldn't take much to change it. Sweepers and packed defences are on show everywhere now but the successful teams seem to have mastered the knack of breaking fast and switching to direct running - Galway for example are mixing both systems very well at the moment. The other thing that strikes me is how the minors and U-21s of some counties have emerged and are making a big contribution to the team; now's the time for our young stars to make a statement about themselves.

Thanks for the championship summary over the last couple of years and I do take on board the reasoned suggestion that looking at only the positives and not the complete picture is just as foolhardy as looking at the short term negatives and drawing conclusions from those.
The whole purpose of the piece was perspective and balance.
If you have take the last 3 games and look at the results then we lost 66% winning only 33%, however if you look at the entire year, then we played 15 games winning 11, or a win percentage of 73%. it is a matter of perspective and sample size.
before Terry took over the Under 21's they had a win ration of 0% for 6 years in a row.
since then they have played 22 games, won 17 games and lost 5.
we are always too quick to hail the new king and too quick to condemn the old.
When we win games the manner is unimportant, when we loose games the manner in which we play is open to condemnation.

Not impressed I hear you. I really do and I did think the same until this year. I thought at the McKenna Cup final that this is really starting to click and then the real doubts started in Wexford and Longford. Championship summary is very very important because that's what the Management team wants his players to peak at? The underage structure was in complete disarray when Terry took over. It had been neglected as is the way in a lot of counties. Do you think Tyrone are looking at % win rates in the championship or Monaghan or Donegal. No they expect to win them all. We didn't even show up to the games we lost. And when we win games the manner is unimportant statement? I didn't hear anyone saying everything's ok after the Westmeath game. The Under 21s have an unbelievable record in Ulster but it will only get you so far by inhibiting quality players. This years U21 Ulster final first half. Was it a joy to watch because we ended up winning? No it was awful to watch those quality players being told to sit back and sit back and defend. The perspective I have here is if this persists then you will destroy naturally talented footballers. Terry and co are taking this defensive tactic to the extreme whereas other counties have not gone this defensive with better results. I thought Andrews was too quick to be condemned after the attacking Cavan he produced in 2001 and in my opinion his squad and style of play brought Kerrigans team to the National League Final the following year. So no im not quick to condemn anyone but blinkers must be taken off at times and look at more than results. This is fixable, but if it persists players will leave and we will be the worse off for it

Terry has done what he set out to do in getting us up to division 2. Having been to all games they played this year you would have to be worried about coming straight back down next year. Division two is a big step up and remember Armagh where relegated from it this year.We need to make big changes to how we play the game and if Terry is not willing to do that he should stand down. In my opinion relegation next year will set us back towards square one again.

Only one place this cavan team are going in division 2 and that is down if the current maagement is not changed. They will not be changed as chairman in his last year and he was bounced into giving a 4 year contract so that won't happen. However I don't really think that terry is the problem, he needs to do a mcguinness on this and clear out the negative people in the back room team. We also need to think about what is going to happen at u21 next year. We cannot allow what is happening at this level to continue and I do not care if we win 10 ulster titles in a row if we cannot develop a few scoring forwards. I have read on this forum about how Roscommon got hammered because they played football against dublin and how we did the right thing in the way we played. Rubbish, Roscommon , Galway tipp and most other teams use their u21 teams to develop senior players and they have. We would love to have a couple of those Roscommon lads available to us. Of course we could probably give them a couple of backs that we have developed. Sorry we could give them 10 because that is all we develop. Finally please don't talk about Peter Reilly as next manager. Same school as terry only brought us to a new level of negativity this year at u21.Cavan need an outside manager with a proven pedigree to move the good work that terry has done. Next year will be too late. We also nned a change at under 21 to a set up that will play forwards in the forward positions and hope to bring even 1 marque forward to the senior team. 5 years of ulster dominance at this level and yet not one forward that stands out that would make the major teams. Does that not tell it's own story. I have no doubt that the same people will be in charge of both teams next year, and this time year we will be saying the same thing. Act now or we will regret it
