CLUB NOTES

Cornafean 1 goal 8 pts
Shercock 0 7 pts
With Shercock joint top of Division 3 and Cornafean just one piont behind in third place, this was always going to be an intriguing fixture as the ACFL recommenced after a long break.  There were heavy showers before and during the match leaving a slippy sod but both teams went at it from the start and it certainly was not a place for the fainthearted.  The pace of the game was ferocious, the tackling was hard and the sweepers on both teams were coming to the fore thus leaving the game devoid of many scores.
Indeed it was 15 minutes on the clock before Andrew Smith kicked over a free for the Reds but wo minutes later Killian Clarke pointed for the Shercock men.  Ryan Clerkin pointed one minute later for Shercock but Barry Doyle who was named at corner forward but playing everywhere  equalised.  The exchanges continued hot and heavy and when Andrew Smith kicked over another free on 28 minutes it gave the Reds a half time lead with the scoreline 3 pts to 2 in favour of Cornafean.
With both inside forward lines not seeing any ball the game was a stark reminder of a very recent Ulster final.
Cornafean suffered a setback early in the second half with the dismissal of Cormac Geoghegan on a straight Red card but in fairness the Reds did not let it upset their drive or determination.  Liam Duignan dropped further back down the field and won some hugely important interceptions.  It was 11 minutes into the second half when Niall Sheridan kicked a monster pint but D. McIntyre replied for Shercock.  Andrew Smith's free and a great point from play from Duignan put 3 points between the sides and 16 minutes on the clock.  The decisive score of the game came with 18 minutes gone in the 2nd half and it fell to Cornafean when a high balled floated  in towards the goals was knocked down by sub Pauric Tully and brilliant corner back Jason Mine was on hand to drive the ball to the net. Cornafean were now in the driving seat and just needed to keep their heads to see the game out.  Shercock were not lying down and points from R. Clerkin and Darren McIntyre left it a four point game with 10 minutes remaining.  Jack Wharton and Pauric Tully kicked late points to send the win for the Reds and the guts and dermination shown by the team must be very encouraging for the months ahead.  Killian Clarke kicked a late consolation score for the visitors and no doubt going forward they are a team to watch gut Shercock can have no complaints from Sunday as they were beaten by a very hungry team.  Best for the Reds in an excellent team display were J. Miney, P. Woods, J. cullen and C. Sheridan in the back line, Niall Sheridan and Jack Wharton were immense in midfield and up front Andrew Smith, A. Wharton an dLiam Duignan were excellent.  Best for Shercock were P. McMahon and P. Clerkin in defence, M. McEneaney and B. Sharkey in the middle and their half forward line of R. Clerkin, K. Clarke and D. McIntyre were best.
Cornafean..R. Geoghegan, J. Miney, D. Wharton, J. Cullen, C. Duignan, C. Sheridan, P. Woods, N. Sheridan, J. Wharton, A. Smith, A. Wharton, C. Geoghegan, A. McCaffrey, L. Duignan, B. Doyle, Subs  P. Tully, B. Sheridan.

UNIOR D CHAMPIONSHIP......Well done to the Cornafean Reserve lads who got their Junior  D Championship off to the perfect start on Friday evening last with  a good victory over Templeport. On a scoreline of 3...12 to 0...7  for the men in Red it was a comprehensive and morale boosting  victory and they will now be hopeful of going far in the competition.Emmet Goldrick was the man on form for Cornafean over the hours play and his three goals ensured  a comfortable win as the Templeport defence were not able to cope with his strong physical prescence and powerful shot.Emmett  was ably supported in the forward line by P Tully,W Johnson,VSheridan and A Smith  who all contributed points from play.Ciaran Duignan and John Martin dominated the midfield sector  supplying the forwards with lots of ball and in fairness the did not waste their opportunities. The Reds defence were solid overall with T McGlade in goals well minded by full backs Gerard Olwill and Brian Sheridan with the half backs S Doyle ,P Brady and N Corcoran  all excellent throughout. Substitutes J Carthwright, K O,Reilly and C Briody all entered the fray  and contributed to a good victory and next up in the competitions are  Redhills.
