CORNAFEAN CLUB NOTES

Cornafean relinquished their Division 3 Breffni League Crown to a strong Drung team in 3G Breffni Park on Sunday afternoon.  The Reds were missing some regulars but nevertheless approached the game in a confident mood and the early exchanges of a lively opening quarter were evenly matched.  Pauric Tully and Jack Wharton kicked some great early scores but the sucker punch of two quick fire goals from the pacy Drung forwards around the 20th minute mark left the men in Red chasing the game thereafter.  In fairness to Cornafean they replied with nice points from P. Tully, Adrian McCaffrey and Cormac Geoghegan to leave just 4 points between the teams at the break.  Into the second half and Jack Wharton and Niall Sheridan were trying valiantly to maintain possession for the Reds and some nice early points from Jack Wharton,  Niall Corcoran and David Egan suggested a possible comeback but a third goal from Drung when a high ball dropped into the square and wasn't dealt with mid way through the second half encouraged the men from Bunnoe to push on and record a deserved victory.  A missed goal chance and an unfortunate black card for excellent defender Dan Whaton compounded the Reds problems in the latter stages of the match but there is no doubt both the team and management will use this experience to regroup and prepare a fully fit squad for their main ambition of winning the promotion playoff and securing Div 2 football for the Reds in 2016.  Best for the Reds on Sunday were J. Cullen, M. Johnson and D. Wharton in the backline, J. Wharton and Niall Sheridan worked overtime in the middle and pick of the forward line were Pauric Tully and Andrew Wharton.
