May 27, 2015

Cavan are crowned Leinster U14 champions

Cavan 5-9 Monaghan 2-4

Coco Chanel once said that "Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance" and so it was on Sunday evening last as Cavan Ladies youngest county team, the u14 squad took on near neighbours Monaghan in the final of the Ulster U14 A Championship in Milltown. Local club Drumlane and its officers extended a real Cavan welcome to the large crowd who turned out in force to cheer on their young footballers. The Cavan team under the directorship of manager Mick Flynn quickly settled into game controlling events from the outset, methodical in their execution of the passing game and deadly accuracy in their score taking as they set about defending their Ulster title. Flowing passages of play showcased the Cavan ladies belief in their ability as they controlled and patrolled every sector of the Drumlane pitch counteracting the Monaghan attack like true professionals. Three first half goals from Aine Reilly, Niamh Keenaghan and Erinn Longair determined the strength of the Cavan resolve and the depth of the girls character was tested on more than one occasion with Aine Corcoran and Aoife Dent cleaning up the back line.

Half time score Cavan 3-2 Monaghan 2-2

Referee Dessie Friel heralded the start of the second half and there was a palpable air of anticipation of another Ulster title for the Breffni Ladies. The Cavan management team of David Daly, Maureen Lynch ,Vanessa Brady, Thomas Kellegher and Eamonn Brady encouraged and tutored their team from every angle of the field as Mick Flynn continued to analyse and assess the play, creating opportunity and instilling belief in his players. There came wave after wave of Cavan attacking play as the confidence started to soar, simple effective football was the winner as the Cavan team masterminded another Ulster win.  Aine Reilly scored another two goals making a hat trick for the talented St. Finbarr's player.  Aine Corcoran met the Monaghan attack onslaught with great maturity and foresight and was ably assisted by Lauren Mc Veety and the Brady sisters Leah and Kayla as the ball was played out from the Cavan defense and channelled through the very versatile Niamh Keenaghan.  Players of the match were evident throughout on this historic team but in fairness this win will be remembered as a game played with character and not by characters.
