Gaels miss out in 'Player of the Year' race

The 'Senior Player of the Year' award in Cavan will not go to a Cavan Gaels player this year after the county champions failed to have a player nominated for the gong.

Nominees were selected by a diverse group which included supporters, players, managers, members of the media and county board officials and revealed on the board's website on Wednesday, but the Gaels, who saw captain Eamonn Reilly win last year in an upset over Ballinagh's Niall McDermott, are out of the running for the senior award.

Instead McDermott, Kingscourt and Cavan U21 goalkeeper James Farrelly have been nominated along with Cuchulainns' veteran Seamus Clarke after the Mullagh men's brave run to the last four of the senior championship.

In the intermediate section, Cootehill's Enda Hessin, scorer of 1-7 in the competition's final, is the favourite, with Kevin Tierney of Ballyhaise and Belturbet's Brendan Fitzpatrick also in the running.

Champions Arva look a shoo-in for the junior gong, having gained two of the three nomination through full-forward Jonathan McCabe and full-back James Morris, 'Man of the Match' in the championship final. Ballymachugh and Cavan U21 midfielder Liam Buchanan look to have his work cut out to deny the St Patrick's club in that section.

The awards night will take place at the Hotel Kilmore on November 21st, with the Cavan U21 and junior players also set to be presented their Ulster and All-Ireland medal, respectively, on the night.
