Cavan Gaels club notes

September 29, 2014

Senior Championship

Well done to our seniors who had a facile victory over Cuchulainns in the championship semi-final on Saturday night last in Kingspan Bréifne Park. Scores were at a premium in the first half but the Gaels forged ahead in the third quarter and coasted to victory. We now meet in the final the winners of the Kingscourt-Ballinagh clash which takes place next weekend. In a quarter-final encounter played at the weekend, Ballinagh battled back well after conceding two early goals to Mullahoran to register a five-point victory. Well done to our players and management.

Under-8s/Under-10s

Our under-8s and under-10s paid a visit to Cornafean on Saturday morning last and played a series of games. Thanks to the Cornafean club for their hospitality. Míle buíochas.

Under-14

Our under-14s hosted Castlerahan in Terry Coyle Park in the championship on Monday last. This was a magnificent game with the issue in doubt right up to the final whistle. After a high-scoring game the visitors came out on top by one point. Well done to the mentors and players whose hard work is bearing fruit. Comhghairdeas.

Sympathy

Our sympathy is extended to the Smith family, Tulac Mongan, on the death of their mother Kathleen. Her sons Noel, Hubert and Gerard were playing members with Cavan Gaels. Kathleen was, for many years, an honorary vice-president of Cavan Gaels. She was a regular worker at the Cavan Gaels bingo in the Town Hall where she rang the bell in the side room to indicate that there was a check! Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam uasal.

Willie Doonan Play

Well-known Bailieboro playwright is working on a new play whose subject is the legendary Cavan county, Cavan Harps and Cavan Slashers player Willie Doonan. Willie, on his return from England, was also involved with Cavan Gaels in a managerial capacity. Any information on Willie's life which might merit inclusion in the play can be forwarded to J.J. Reilly 086-1005303.

Health and Wellbeing Seminar

Cavan Gaels club was represented at the Health and Wellbeing Seminar in the Hotel Kilmore on Saturday morning last. Guest speakers were Oisín McConville, former All-Ireland winner with Armagh and Crossmaglen. Oisín discussed his experiences in overcoming his gambling addiction and his work around the country promoting health and wellbeing. Susan Kenny, from the National Office for Suicide Prevention(NOSP), is currently assisting the NOSP in devising a new national policy aimed at reducing the incidence of suicide in Ireland. She outlined, in particular, how the GAA can contribute to this important work. She emphasised the importance of gaelic games and other sports as a means of promoting positive mental health in its participants. Colin Regan, former Leitrim footballer and the GAA's Community and Health Manager, looked at how coaches, officers, players and parents can contribute to a culture that fosters positive experiences in clubs. This, he argues, will result not just in better, more rounded players but healthier people as well. The onus now is on all sports clubs to promote health and wellbeing and to look out for any signs that a player needs help in this crucial area. Bímis ar faire.

Cavan Gaels Tornadoes

Coaching for the Cavan Gaels Tornadoes, where the emphasis is on having fun, continues in Terry Coyle Park on Saturday next at 11am. Thanks to all those who have helped in any way with the launch of the Cavan Gaels Tornadoes. A particular word of thanks to all the coaches who turned up at the launch and who have continued to do so on Saturday mornings from 11.00-12 noon. Thanks also to all the parents who continue to attend and offer their help. New boys and girls always welcome. Rud an-thábhachtach é go mbeimid ábalta freastal ar an óige i gcónai agus go luífidh baill an chluib isteach ar an obair bhunúsach seo.

Under-Age Coaching

Under-age coaching up to the age of twelve takes place in Terry Coyle Park every Saturday morning at 11am.

John Fee Day

Our annual John Fee Day took place in Terry Coyle Park recently. A series of games took place for our under-8, under-10 and under-12 boys and for our under-12 girls. Stalwart Cavan Gaels supporter Mick McCarthy presented the Brother Cyril Plaque for under-8 boys to Bobbie Hanley. The John Fee Memorial Cup for under-10 boys was presented to Favor Shehu by Kathleen Fee. Terence (Doc) Smith presented the Hughie Smith Memorial Cup for the under-12 boys, in memory of his father, to Lucas McDermott, and the Ruairí Dunne Memorial Cup for the under-12 girls was presented by Fergal Dunne, brother of Ruairí, to Aiveen Sexton. All the participants in the games received a specially inscribed medal. The medals were presented by various members of the Cavan Gaels senior football team. There were many other activities throughout the morning- three-legged races, rounders, egg and spoon races, face painting. The cake sale as usual proved to be very popular and those in charge of the barbecue were kept busy! Brisk business was done also at the merchandise stand. Thanks to all who brought items for the cake sale, to those who organised and refereed the games, to those who co-ordinated the face painting, to those who were at the burger stand and the cake sale stall. Thanks to Mark Leddy in particular who co-ordinated the day's activities. This day has become a very important occasion in the club calendar. Ní neart go cur le chéile. Is ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine.

John Fee Night

The life of the late John Fee will be commemorated at a function in the Slieve Rossa on Wednesday 22 November with the High Stool Prophets providing the music. John passed away ten years ago on 22 November.

Sympathy

Our sympathy is extended to Jerome Kellegher and his family on the recent death of his mother Mae. Jerome Kellegher is a very active member of Cavan Gaels club. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam uasal.

Sports' Capital Grant

Cavan Gaels has been awarded €110.000 in the latest Sports' Capital Grant scheme. We thank all those who in any way contributed to the application or helped in any way to expedite the granting of this money. Thanks to all those who have already joined the Friends of Cavan Gaels and in doing so have made a very important contribution to our club's development plans. We would encourage those members, at home and abroad, who have not joined so far, to consider joining the Friends of Cavan Gaels. We are glad to report that work has commenced on this project.
