Lights out in Cavan SFC

The Cavan senior football championship could be held up if Castlerahan proceed with an appeal against the result of their match against Mullahoran on Sunday evening.

The Anglo Celt reports that the floodlights at Breffni Park failed during the first period of extra-time in the match and Castlerahan are claiming that "less than eight minutes" was played in that first period.

County PRO Declan Woods has claimed that the floodlights were deliberately turned off.

"The only thing I can tell you is that the head groundsman, John Wrenn, inspected the tanks before extra-time and there was enough diesel and everything was in order," he explained to the Anglo Celt.

"There is an emergency handle, just like on a bus, and in this case it's a red button, and it sounds surreal but somebody had hit the button.

"There has to be an emergency external release in case it's needed and somebody pressed it. It's as simple as that.

"With floodlighting and generators, there is a time lag of 15 to 20 minutes between it cooling and heating up again. Somebody hit it and knocked it off.

"I don't see that it was anything other than mischievous. I've come into Kingspan Breffni Park on several evenings where there are double-headers on, about 10 minutes into the second game, and there a lot of youngster milling around."
