Cavan GAA has lost one its most staunch supporters with the sad passing of Lavey native Joe McManus.

The ex-garda sergeant died peacefully at his home in Enniscrone, Co Sligo, surrounded by his loving family on Monday. He was 94 years old.

Considered by many to be a historian when it came to Gaelic games, Joe, an excellent writer on GAA matters, followed the Cavan team for decades and was friends with many members of the famous 1947 side which defeated Kerry in New York's Polo Grounds.

During his own playing days, he lined out with Lavey in the full-back line and had the distinction of playing for the Cavan minor team in 1940 at right half-back.

Joe's service with the An Garda Siochana eventually saw him move from his native county to Sligo and he soon became immersed in the Enniscrone/Kilglass club, serving as its chairman from 1965 until 1977.

A fluent Gaelic speaker, he became Irish Officer of the Sligo county board and held the role for 20 years, having also been involved with the county hurling board throughout the 1970s.

He maintained his interest in Sligo and Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA down through the years and was honoured by the club with a President's award in March 2016.

Funeral details:
