Last Friday's Carlow intermediate football championship clash between O'Hanrahan's and Ballon had to be abandoned after 57 minutes.

O'Hanrahan's were ahead by 2-11 to 1-7 when referee Pat Kehoe elected to call a halt to proceedings with just three minutes left as numerous fights broke out involving players from both teams.

The match had been played in very difficult conditions, with a heavy dowpour beforehand and rain continuing for most of the first half.

The referee used his common sense and let a few mistimed tackles go, making an allowance for the conditions, but the players took this as their cue to take matters into their own hands and, eventually, violence broke out.
