Carlow made it through to the semi-finals of the Walsh Cup with a comfortable 2-19 to 0-11 win over NUIG in tonight's group 1 play-off at the Netwatch Training Centre in Fenagh.

Despite having played the entire second half with 14-men after centre forward Eddie Byrne was sent off before the break, Pat English's charges were always in control.

Marty Kavanagh produced a man of the match display for the hosts and finished with eleven points (six frees) to his name.

Playing against a stiff breeze, the opening half belonged to Carlow as a Craig Wall goal and five Kavanagh points (three frees) helped them to a 1-10 to 0-5 interval lead.

The Galway students hit the first two scores of the second half through free-taker Cathal Mannion but points from John Rogers and Kavanagh (3), followed by a goal from captain Seamus Murphy on 50 minutes put the tie beyond doubt - 2-14 to 0-7.

Further scores from Kavanagh, Wall and Hugh Paddy O'Byrne closed out the game for the winners who now face Offaly or Galway in the last four next weekend, while NUIG turn their attention to a Fitzgibbon Cup round 1 clash with UL.
