Rainbow delighted with Carlow response

Anthony Rainbow hailed his Carlow players after they put their drubbing by Meath behind them to beat Waterford on Saturday.

Showing remarkable powers of recovery from their 28-point Leinster SFC quarter-final mauling a fortnight ago, the Barrowsiders edged a close contest at Dr Cullen Park to set up another home tie with Clare in the second round of the All-Ireland qualifiers.

"It was a team effort," the former Kildare star said.

"It's a 20-plus-man game. It's the players that are on the bench that matter when you're in a tight game like that. You need them in the right frame of mind.

"It is really hard to pick out individuals. Willie Minchin came on and worked very hard - Jack Kennedy scored a point. Everybody made a contribution.

"I am happy with the win - this group of Carlow players deserve it. This Carlow team is not far off the finished product."
