Hickey, Mick

October 09, 2012
The death occurred on 26 September in Chicago of Michael (Mick) Hickey, formerly of Abbeylands, Castledermot. Mick was born in 1919 to Tom and Catherine (Kate) Hickey of Carlow Gate, one of 9 children and predeceased by all of them and by his dear wife Josie in 2003. Mick was deeply involved in Castledermot GAA and was a founder member of the breakaway club Starlings in the early 1960s. He also played with the Castledermot fife and drum band. He worked in and around Castledermot, including the building of St. Mary's Convent until he emigrated to Chicago in mid 60's. Mick never lost touch with Castledermot, the Nationalist was sent to him each week, "as his parish news was better read from his own hands as opposed to reading from a PC, Mick's own words". He donated the Emigrants Cup to Castle.

The cup was first presented by his late sister Bridie (Biddy) Leigh of Athy. He also donated trophies and medals on many occasions. Mick is mourned by his family, Mick, Kathleen, Rita, Josephine, Billy and Breda and his sons and daughters-in-law, his many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews in Chicago and here in Ireland. Ar Dheis De go raibh a anam.
