The Late Joe Townsend

The death of Joe Townsend, Linkardstown took place on Saturday 15 May in St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny after a short illness. Joe, who was aged 85 years, was a long-standing member of the Tinryland community. He lived all of his life in Linkardstown and married Statia Walshe in 1955, and together they recently celebrated 55 years of married life.
Joe had a great love of Tinryland GAA and it was apt that he took ill on the previous Wednesday after watching his granddaughter play ladies football match. With his wife Statia, he loved social occasions, always dressed well, and was an enthusiastic member of the active retirement group. He worked for many years in Clogrennane Limeworks and retained many old friendships. A religious man, communicant in St Joseph's Church, Tinryland, he was also a lifelong member of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association.
His remains were removed from St Luke's Hospital to his home in Linkardstown and then to St Joseph's Church, Tinryland on Monday, where Mass was concelebrated by Rev John McEvoy PP assisted by Rev Eamonn Hayden, Zambian Missions and Fr Mark Townsend, CC Mountrath. He was buried in the local cemetery where the large congregation bore testimony to his popularity.
He will be sadly missed by his wife Statia, daughters Mary, Brigid, Teresa and Anne, sons Paddy, Eddie, Jimmy and Jody, sister Maggie O'Neill, 19 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, relatives and a wide circle of friends.
