Counties unite against fixture

July 30, 2008
Carlow and Westmeath hurling chiefs have insisted that their counties won't be going ahead with their Christy Ring Cup final fixture at Croke Park on Friday night next. The GAA has angered both camps by fixing the decider for Friday (7.30pm) at headquarters and it is understood negotiations between the counties and Croke Park powerbrokers are ongoing to resolve their differences. Carlow and Westmeath bosses want the final to be played on a Sunday with Westmeath chairman Tom Farrell indicating that a clash with local fixtures was his county's motivation for looking for a re-scheduling of the fixture. Meanwhile Carlow team-manager Jim Greene maintains he wasn't aware of any offer by Croke Park to have the fixture played on Saturday week as part of a double header involving the Dublin footballers in the All-Ireland quarter-final.
