O'Gorman: Don't tinker with Munster championship
July 16, 2008
Munster Council Jimmy O'Gorman has strongly urged the Hurling Development Committee not to tinker with the Munster hurling championship, insisting that it remains one of the GAA's "flagship events".
The HDC are proposing a number of changes to the existing championship structure, the most notable of which is including Galway and Antrim in an expanded Leinster championship. But Waterford native O'Gorman is adamant that the status quo must remain in Munster.
He said: "The Munster championship is one of the GAA's flagship events. Up to Sunday we had 88,000 attending the Munster championship and we were disappointed.
"But the 48,000 at Sunday's decider was a massive boost and showed just how important this competition is.
"We have a very, very good hurling championship. Anyone of the five could have won it. All of our teams bar Limerick are still in the hunt for the All-Ireland which shows how strong the game is here. I couldn't but be happy after Sunday.
"I've said it before and I'll say it again - I don't want to see any change or tampering with the Munster championship."
O'Gorman added: "Our main concern is to keep working. The other codes are also working hard and we can't take our eye off the ball. We need the coaches, but we also need to recognise the work of the volunteer within the clubs.
"This association was built on trust and volunteerism. I'd hate to think this is being forgotten or taken for granted."
