Umpire didn't see red as reported
July 11, 2008
There was an element of confusion surrounding events in the recent JAFC game involving St. Pat's and Enniskerry, after which it was reported in certain quarters that a player and umpire had been sent off.
Referee Jonathan Doyle by all accounts did a fine job in his officiating of the game but he was faced with a difficulty before the game when those doing the umpiring in the preceding Rathnew v Kilmacanogue didn't as he had expected continue their duties in his game. He was obliged to engage umpires from the clubs involved in his game and as a result of an incident, which one reported described as a minor scuffle he sent off one player from the Wicklow town club and Damien Driver also departed the scene at the same time.
While the referee did confirm that he had sent off the umpire, Driver, a man whose commitment to the GAA is second to none says he was not red-carded and in any event a referee does not appear to have such authority.
